Re:

Buying a Router? The New U.S. Rule Narrows Future Choices—Here’s What It Means

The FCC did not make most foreign-made routers illegal. Here’s what the 2026 Covered List change means for existing owners, shoppers, brands, ISP gateways, and prices.

Most Americans do not need to replace a router because of the FCC’s new rule. On March 23, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission added “routers produced in a foreign country” to its national-security Covered List. That generally prevents new covered router models from receiving FCC equipment authorization unless they receive a qualifying Conditional Approval from the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security.

Existing routers can continue operating, and retailers can generally keep selling, importing, and marketing models that already received FCC authorization. The immediate effect is on the pipeline of new products—not a recall of routers already in homes or stores. That distinction matters for your budget: there is no reason to panic-buy a replacement, but you should evaluate an aging router’s security support before keeping it for another year.

The short version for shoppers

  • Keep your current router if it still receives security updates, works reliably, and meets your speed and coverage needs.
  • You can still buy many existing models. Previously authorized products are not immediately prohibited from sale.
  • Check the exact model and hardware revision, not only the brand. A company may have both previously authorized products and new models subject to the restriction.
  • Conditional Approval is limited and product-specific. It is not a permanent, blanket exemption for an entire company.
  • Do not assume prices will rise. The rule could increase compliance costs or reduce future model launches, but the FCC notices do not establish a guaranteed price increase.

The FCC’s March 23 public notice and consumer fact sheet provide the controlling explanation. The FCC’s live Covered List and Conditional Approvals page should be checked for later changes.

What the FCC actually changed

The Covered List is a national-security mechanism created under the Secure Networks Act. Equipment placed on the list generally cannot receive new FCC equipment authorization. For wireless routers, that authorization is an important gate before a new model can be marketed for use in the United States.

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The March 23 action added the category “routers produced in a foreign country.” The exception is for routers granted Conditional Approval by the Department of War or DHS through the applicable government review process.

In practical terms, the rule makes it substantially harder for a manufacturer to launch a new foreign-produced consumer-router model in the U.S. without additional national-security review. It does not say that every foreign-made router currently in American homes is illegal, and it does not create a general requirement that every router sold in the country be 100% domestically manufactured.

Is this a total ban on foreign router brands?

No. “The U.S. banned foreign routers” is a misleading shorthand.

Question Current answer
Can you continue using a foreign-made router you already own? Yes. The FCC’s consumer materials do not require an immediate replacement.
Can a retailer continue selling an already-authorized model? Yes, according to the FCC fact sheet.
Can a foreign-produced manufacturer introduce a new U.S. model normally? Generally no, unless the product receives Conditional Approval.
Is every product from a foreign-owned company prohibited? Not necessarily. The relevant category is foreign production, along with recognized exemptions.
Is a U.S. brand automatically exempt? No. Brand nationality and production location are different questions.
Must every router be fully made in the United States? The cited FCC materials do not establish a simple consumer-facing 100%-domestic rule.

The policy also does not establish that every foreign-made router contains a backdoor. The FCC and executive branch have cited national-security, supply-chain, and cybersecurity risks; those are government determinations and should not be converted into a universal claim about individual products.

What does “foreign-produced” mean?

The FCC uses the category “routers produced in a foreign country,” which is broader than the logo on the box. A company’s headquarters, ownership, design location, assembly site, contract manufacturer, and component supply chain may not all be in the same country.

The FCC’s Conditional Approval guidance requests detailed information about:

  • Foreign-government ownership, influence, financing, or support.
  • Manufacturing locations and supply-chain arrangements.

That information indicates that regulators look beyond a brand’s marketing label. However, the available notices do not provide a complete consumer-facing country-of-origin test. Do not assume that “designed in the U.S.,” “American company,” or “assembled in the U.S.” automatically answers the FCC question.

There are also model-level complications. A new hardware revision, rebrand, or white-label product may not have exactly the same authorization or approval status as an older model with a similar name. When in doubt, check the exact model number and hardware revision with the manufacturer or retailer.

What happens to TP-Link, Asus, Linksys, Netgear, and eero?

Popular-brand coverage requires care. The rule is not a published blanket blacklist of every product sold under TP-Link, Asus, Linksys, or another brand. Many models from major brands could be affected because products are often produced outside the United States, but the status of a particular new model depends on its production arrangement, FCC authorization, and any Conditional Approval.

Brand or family What buyers should know Important caveat
Netgear The FCC’s June 4 update listed Nighthawk and Orbi consumer mesh, mobile, and standalone router families, plus cable gateways and cable modems, under Conditional Approval. The listed approval period ended October 1, 2027; not every future SKU or hardware revision is necessarily covered.
eero/Amazon The listed families included eero, eero Pro, eero Max, eero PoE, eero Outdoor, eero Signal, and Amazon Leo routers. The listed approval period ended October 31, 2027, and approval is not a general guarantee of security, privacy, or retail availability.
TP-Link Do not treat the brand name alone as proof that every product is banned or exempt. Check the exact U.S. model and current FCC status. Existing authorized models may remain available even if future foreign-produced launches face the restriction.
Asus Existing authorized models may remain available; a new model’s status must be assessed individually. Brand nationality does not determine production location or approval status.
Linksys Check the exact model, hardware revision, and support life rather than assuming a brand-wide result. A familiar product name may conceal a newer revision with different authorization details.

The June 4 FCC update also listed Conditional Approvals for router-related product families from Adtran, Calix, Nokia, and Alpha Networks USA. Those entries covered specified products or classes, not necessarily every retail item sold by each company.

Conditional Approval is the main escape valve

A foreign router producer can request review by the Department of War or DHS. If the relevant process grants Conditional Approval, the covered equipment is exempted from the Covered List restriction for the terms of that approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guidance allows approvals lasting up to 18 months. They may have individual expiration dates and can be terminated for violations or material misrepresentations. A Conditional Approval should therefore be treated as a time-limited regulatory status, not a permanent certificate for a brand.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

It also does not mean that a router is objectively risk-free, the fastest option, or the best value. FCC equipment authorization primarily addresses radio-frequency and communications compliance. It is not a general consumer certification that a device’s firmware is secure or private.

What the June 4, 2026 approval list included

The latest approval update in the supplied FCC material listed these router-related families and dates:

  • Netgear: Nighthawk, Orbi, cable gateways, and cable modems, listed through October 1, 2027.
  • Adtran: Service Delivery Gateway class routers, listed through October 1, 2027.
  • eero/Amazon: eero and specified eero and Amazon Leo families, listed through October 31, 2027.
  • Calix: Listed 7u6.2, 7p6, 7u6m.2, 7u4txg, and 7u4 broadband routers, with dates extending into late 2027.
  • Nokia: Wi-Fi 8, Beacon, ONT-based Beacon, and FastMile Gateway products, with approvals extending through October 31, 2027.
  • Alpha Networks USA: 1700 and 2700 series routers, listed through November 22, 2027.

These are product families and classes, not a promise that every retail SKU is covered or will remain in stock. The list can change, so use the FCC’s current status page rather than relying on an old article or retailer description.

What existing router owners should do

No immediate replacement is required solely because of this FCC action. But legal continued use and sensible security are separate questions.

  1. Check the firmware date and support status. Look in the router app or web administration page for updates, then check the manufacturer’s support page for the model’s end-of-life policy.
  2. Install available updates. Enable automatic updates when the feature is trustworthy and available.
  3. Change default credentials. Use a unique administrator password and a strong Wi-Fi password.
  4. Disable remote administration unless you specifically need it.
  5. Use WPA2 or WPA3. Retire equipment that only supports obsolete security modes.
  6. Review connected devices. Remove unknown devices and change the Wi-Fi password if you suspect unauthorized access.
  7. Ask your ISP about gateway support. Provider-supplied equipment may be updated or replaced on the ISP’s schedule.

If the router is unsupported, repeatedly vulnerable, unreliable, or too slow for your connection, replacement can still be financially sensible. That would be an ordinary security or performance decision—not a legal response demanded by the new rule.

What about ISP-provided gateways?

Many households do not buy a standalone router. They rent or receive a gateway from Comcast/Xfinity, Verizon, AT&T, Cox, CenturyLink/Lumen, T-Mobile, or another provider.

Those gateways may also rely on foreign-produced hardware. The FCC action could require providers and equipment suppliers to manage future model authorizations differently, but consumers should not assume that ISP equipment is automatically exempt. Ask your provider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which exact gateway model will be supplied?
  • Has that model already received U.S. authorization?
  • Will the provider replace unsupported equipment without charging a new hardware fee?
  • Can the gateway run in bridge or passthrough mode if you want your own router?
  • Are Wi-Fi security updates automatic?

Provider equipment offers convenience and guaranteed service compatibility, but it can involve rental fees, limited configuration, cloud management, and dependence on the ISP’s replacement cycle. Compare the total cost over several years with buying your own device.

Could router prices rise?

Possibly, but it is not an established result of the FCC notices.

Potential market effects include fewer new model launches, higher compliance costs, greater reliance on approved product families, and inventory volatility. Those pressures could give approved manufacturers more pricing power. On the other hand, retailers might discount older inventory, and competition among already-authorized models could keep prices down.

For your household budget, the practical lesson is not to buy an expensive router solely on a prediction of shortages. Compare the actual price, support period, warranty, and total cost—including subscriptions and ISP rental fees—at the time you purchase.

How to buy a router under the new rule

1. Start with the support policy

Look for a clearly stated firmware-support period, automatic security updates, vulnerability disclosures, and a usable process for receiving patches. A cheap authorized router that is already at end of life is usually a false economy.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

2. Verify the exact product

Record the model number and hardware revision. Check the manufacturer’s U.S. page, the retailer’s listing, and the FCC’s current Covered List and Conditional Approvals information. Do not assume that a product-family approval covers every similarly named future revision.

3. Match the hardware to your connection

  • For a cable connection, verify modem certification with your ISP.
  • For fiber, check whether you need an ISP gateway, optical network terminal, or passthrough arrangement.
  • For DSL or fixed wireless, confirm compatibility before ordering.
  • For bundled phone service, verify that replacing the gateway will not disable voice service.
  • For multi-gigabit service, check both Wi-Fi capability and wired Ethernet port speeds.

4. Pay for capacity you will use

Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7 can be worthwhile, but the benefit depends on your client devices, home layout, internet plan, interference, and need for the 6-GHz band. A mesh system may be more valuable than a premium single router in a large or heavily obstructed home. Wired backhaul can improve mesh performance where Ethernet cabling is available.

5. Price the ownership model

Compare a one-time purchase with ISP rental and subscription-backed features. Some systems charge for enhanced security, parental controls, or cloud management. If you want advanced local control, check whether the basic routing functions work without a paid plan or mandatory cloud account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Avoid gray-market imports

A router purchased abroad may use different radio configurations, power requirements, firmware, warranty terms, or support channels. International availability does not establish U.S. authorization, and open-source firmware does not create a loophole around the FCC’s production-based category.

Potential alternatives—and their trade-offs

There is no single “ban-proof” router category. Each option has a different cost and complexity profile.

  • Netgear Nighthawk or Orbi: A broad retail choice, including cable-related products, with listed Conditional Approval for specified families. Verify the exact SKU, support period, and any paid security features. Official pages: Nighthawk and home Wi-Fi and Orbi mesh.
  • Amazon eero: A simple app-managed mesh option with listed Conditional Approval for specified families. It may be a poor fit if you want extensive local administration or minimal cloud dependence. See eero’s official store.
  • ISP gateway: Convenient and generally compatible, but potentially more expensive over time and less configurable. Check your provider’s current equipment policy.
  • UniFi, MikroTik, OPNsense, or Protectli-style systems: Potentially stronger for advanced configuration, VLANs, multiple access points, or local control, but they may require more technical work and separate hardware decisions. No supplied FCC source establishes that every product in these ecosystems is exempt. Official sites include Ubiquiti, MikroTik, OPNsense, and Protectli.

What could happen next?

The most defensible possibilities are scenarios, not predictions:

  • More manufacturers could seek Conditional Approval.
  • Companies could disclose more about ownership, manufacturing, and supply chains.
  • Some vendors could shift assembly or production arrangements.
  • Retailers could concentrate on product families with clear authorization status.
  • There could be fewer newly introduced models in some Wi-Fi categories or higher compliance costs.
  • The FCC could update the Covered List or approval terms, and the policy could face further legal or administrative challenges.

None of these possibilities makes an existing, supported router an emergency purchase decision.
