Yes, you can find a credible Android foldable phone for about $400 in the U.S.—but usually only if you buy refurbished or open-box. The strongest options observed on August 18, 2026, were a refurbished Motorola Razr 2025 for about $393.74, a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 for about $399.99, and a refurbished Motorola Razr 2024 for about $299.99. These are not stable prices for new, current-generation unlocked phones, and every listing requires a careful check of the seller, warranty, battery disclosure, unlock status, and return policy.
New foldables remain considerably more expensive. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document lists the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE from $899.99, the Galaxy Z Flip7 from $1,099.99, and the Galaxy Z Fold7 from $1,999.99 before promotions or carrier subsidies. See Samsung’s U.S. MSRP data.

| Motorola Razr 2024 | Refurbished, 256GB, unlocked | About $299.99 | Lowest credible cash price | Older hardware and battery age |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 | Refurbished Excellent, 256GB, unlocked | From about $399.99 | Samsung ecosystem users | Older model and used inner display |
| Motorola Razr Fold 2026 | Open-box or refurbished listing | One result showed $399.99 | Only if fully verified | Contradictory prices and listing conditions |
Prices are inventory-dependent search-result observations, not guarantees. Check the individual product page and checkout total before buying. Best Buy’s refurbished foldable listings showed the Razr 2025 near $393.74 and the Razr 2024 near $299.99. Its refurbished foldable search showed the Galaxy Z Flip5 near $399.99.
Best overall: refurbished Motorola Razr 2025
If it is still available near $400, the Razr 2025 is the best compromise between price and age. It gives you a relatively recent clamshell design without the long commitment of a carrier promotion. The unlocked 256GB listing is more flexible for switching U.S. carriers than a carrier-specific deal—provided the exact unit is genuinely unlocked and compatible with your network.
#1 Best Overall
Before paying, confirm who performed the refurbishment, whether the unit is sold by Best Buy or a marketplace seller, the warranty length, battery disclosure, included accessories, cosmetic grade, and return window. “Refurbished Excellent” describes the listing’s condition category; it does not by itself guarantee new-phone battery capacity or a manufacturer warranty.

Skip it if: the seller will not identify the refurbishment standard, the battery is undisclosed, or the return policy does not give you enough time to test the inner screen and hinge.
Best budget choice: refurbished Motorola Razr 2024
At about $299.99, the refurbished Razr 2024 is the lowest-cost recommendation in this group. It makes sense if your priority is getting a compact clamshell phone rather than owning the newest hardware. It is particularly appealing to buyers who would otherwise spend $400 on a conventional phone and want to try the foldable form factor.

The trade-off is age. Older hardware generally means less remaining useful life than the Razr 2025, while refurbished stock may have experienced more battery cycles. The listing also had only a moderate review score, so treat the price as an opportunity—not proof that every unit is a safe purchase.

Best Samsung bargain: refurbished Galaxy Z Flip5
The Galaxy Z Flip5 is the better choice for buyers already invested in Samsung phones, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch, SmartThings, or Samsung’s software. A refurbished unlocked 256GB unit appeared from about $399.99.

- Offers a 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X folding main display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, giving you fluid visuals for media, gaming, and multitasking while still folding into a compact, stylish form.
It is an older generation, and its outer display is less flexible than the larger-cover-screen approach used by newer Razr models. At the same price, the Razr 2025 may be the stronger value for a buyer without an ecosystem preference. The Flip5 becomes more compelling when Samsung’s software, accessories, service network, or continuity with your existing devices matters more than having the newest design.
Skip it if: the listing has a damaged crease, lifted screen protector, touch problems, or no meaningful return window.
Be skeptical of a $400 book-style foldable
Book-style phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold and Motorola Razr Fold open into a larger, tablet-like display. They are better for reading, documents, video, and multitasking, but they are heavier, thicker, and normally far more expensive than clamshells.

A Best Buy result displayed a refurbished or open-box Motorola Razr Fold 2026 512GB unlocked at $399.99, while other results showed prices above $500 and regular pricing near $1,899.99. That contradiction makes the $399.99 figure an inventory-dependent listing, not a dependable market price. Check the exact product page and verify the SKU, condition, seller, shipping status, return policy, and checkout price.
Skip it if: the unusually low price cannot be matched to a specific unit and seller, or if the listing does not explain its warranty and return terms.

What “$400” can mean
- New, unlocked, paid in full: the cleanest comparison, but not the normal price for a current-generation foldable.
- Refurbished: previously owned or returned and inspected before resale. Testing standards vary by seller.
- Open-box: often returned or displayed. It may be complete and lightly used—or missing accessories and carrying a different return policy.
- Carrier promotion: may require a new line, qualifying plan, trade-in, and monthly bill credits.
- Financing: a low monthly payment is not a $400 purchase price. Check the term and total amount paid.
- Trade-in price: depends on the old phone’s model, storage, condition, lock status, and inspection.
- “From” price: may apply only to one color, storage tier, condition grade, or marketplace seller.
Carrier deals versus buying unlocked
Carrier offers can produce a lower effective phone price, but they are not equivalent to buying a $400 unlocked phone. A “free” foldable may mean $0 per month only after 24 or 36 months of bill credits. You may need a qualifying plan and trade-in, and taxes or activation charges may be due immediately. Leaving early or paying off the device can stop the credits. Carrier locking may also apply for a period.

- The 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable main screen supports an adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, offering incredibly fluid motion for gaming, media playback, and split-screen multitasking when using Flex Mode.
Verizon’s promotions include free-phone structures and certified pre-owned Samsung foldables, including Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 offers, but eligibility depends on the specific plan, trade-in, line, and credit terms. Review Verizon’s current offer details.
Samsung’s offers page has shown up to $600 off the Galaxy Z Flip7 and up to $1,000 off the Galaxy Z Fold7 through trade-in promotions. Those amounts are maximum promotional credits, not ordinary unlocked cash prices, and Samsung notes that restrictions and combination rules apply. Check Samsung’s current terms.
For a fair comparison, calculate: device payments, required plan cost, activation fees, taxes, trade-in value, and the value of credits you would lose if you switch carriers early. If you already want the carrier and plan, the promotion may be worthwhile. If you are changing plans solely to obtain a foldable, a refurbished unlocked phone is usually easier to price honestly.

- Identify the seller. A retailer-hosted marketplace listing is not automatically equivalent to a retailer-sold or manufacturer-refurbished phone.
- Confirm the exact condition. Look for the grade, storage, color, model number, and whether it is open-box or refurbished.
- Verify unlocked status. Do not infer it from the model name. Check compatibility with your carrier, SIM or eSIM support, and the IMEI or blacklist status.
- Ask about battery health. If no capacity or health figure is disclosed, treat battery condition as unknown.
- Inspect the hinge. It should open smoothly, align correctly, and show no unusual stiffness, grinding, looseness, or debris.
- Test the inner display. Look for dead pixels, touch dead zones, flicker, crease damage, bubbles, pressure marks, and intermittent problems.
- Check the screen protector. Motorola says Razr phones use a customized, Motorola-developed foldable-screen protector; do not casually remove it or replace it with a generic protector. See Motorola’s Razr documentation.
- Review water-resistance expectations. Do not assume the original model’s water-resistance rating remains reliable after a prior repair or opening.
- Confirm what is included. Check for the charger, cable, case, SIM tool, and any required accessories.
- Read the return and warranty terms. Make sure the return period is long enough for thorough testing and determine whether repairs are handled by the seller, manufacturer, or a third party.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy the Razr 2025 if you can find a reputable refurbished unlocked unit near $400 and want the best balance of age, price, and design.
- Buy the Razr 2024 if keeping the cash price as low as possible matters most and you accept older hardware and unknown battery wear.
- Buy the Galaxy Z Flip5 if Samsung’s software and ecosystem are more important to you than the Razr’s newer design or larger outer-screen approach.
- Skip a $400 book-style foldable unless the individual listing, seller, condition, warranty, and return policy are fully verified.
- Raise your budget or wait if you need the lowest ownership risk. A new phone from a manufacturer or major retailer is safer than a bargain foldable with an uncertain hinge or inner display.
