Cracker Barrel (Nasdaq: CBRL) is best viewed as a conditional turnaround investment, not an obvious buy or sell. FY2026 revenue, earnings, adjusted EBITDA, comparable sales and restaurant traffic all declined from FY2025, but management forecasts improved comparable restaurant sales and adjusted EBITDA in FY2027. A buy case depends on a durable traffic recovery and a reasonable share price; a sell case rests on continued weakness or an unattractive valuation; a hold may suit an existing investor willing to wait for evidence. The company’s results do not, by themselves, establish whether CBRL is attractively priced today.

What the FY2026 results say about CBRL

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. operates a combination of restaurants and gift shops. Its FY2026 ended July 31, 2026; the company reported results on September 23 and filed its Form 10-K on September 25. The company reported operating 655 Cracker Barrel stores in 43 states as of September 11, 2026. It divested Maple Street Biscuit Company during FY2026 and closed its remaining 16 locations. Company investor relations

The full-year results were weaker than the prior year:

Measure FY2026 FY2025
Revenue $3.319 billion $3.484 billion
GAAP net income $31.7 million $46.4 million
Adjusted EBITDA (non-GAAP) $147.7 million $224.3 million
Comparable restaurant sales Down 4.2% Not stated as a comparable value in the FY2026 results release
Comparable retail sales Down 5.2% Not stated as a comparable value in the FY2026 results release
Comparable restaurant guest traffic Down 7.6% Not stated as a comparable value in the FY2026 results release

Traffic matters more than sales alone

Comparable restaurant traffic measures entrees sold at established stores. The company uses that measure to assess performance apart from changes caused by menu pricing and sales mix. In FY2026, average check rose 3.7%, including a 4.3% average menu-price increase, while comparable guest traffic fell 7.6%. That gap matters: revenue can be supported by higher prices even when fewer guests visit, and that is not the same as a broad-based demand recovery.

Q4 showed improvement, but not a full recovery

In Q4 FY2026, revenue was $849.3 million, down 2.2% year over year. Comparable restaurant sales declined 2.1%, while comparable retail sales rose 0.7%. Q4 diluted earnings per share were $0.54 on a GAAP basis and $0.99 adjusted; for the full year, GAAP diluted EPS was $1.40 and adjusted diluted EPS was $0.80. Adjusted EPS and adjusted EBITDA are non-GAAP measures, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with GAAP earnings or cash flow. These figures are from the company’s September 23, 2026 results release.

Why did Cracker Barrel stock fall—and what does management say changed?

The supplied company filing attributes the FY2026 traffic decline primarily to negative publicity and customer reactions to brand initiatives, including a new logo and modern test-store remodels. It also cites weaker consumer demand associated with inflation, higher consumer debt, lower savings, and geopolitical and trade uncertainty. The filing says Cracker Barrel returned to its former logo and discontinued the modern test-store remodels in the first quarter of FY2026. These are management’s explanations, not independent proof of the cause of the decline or evidence that the reversal will restore traffic. FY2026 Form 10-K

CEO David Deno said in the September 23, 2026 results release that the company was seeing “continued improvements in the underlying traffic trend, key guest metrics, and EBITDA results.” That is management’s assessment of progress, not confirmation that a turnaround is secured. The critical test is whether guest traffic continues improving in reported results rather than relying mainly on price and mix.

What management expects in FY2027

Management’s FY2027 outlook projects revenue of $3.325 billion to $3.4 billion, comparable restaurant sales growth of 3% to 5%, and adjusted EBITDA of $180 million to $200 million. The company expects no new store openings. It assumes approximately 3% commodity inflation and hourly wage inflation of 2.5% to 3.0%, and plans capital expenditures of $110 million to $125 million. These are forward-looking company estimates, not guaranteed results. FY2026 results release and outlook

The company says it focuses its earnings guidance on adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, and cannot reconcile that forward-looking estimate to GAAP net income without unreasonable effort because some elements cannot be forecast with reasonable accuracy. EBITDA is not free cash flow: the outlook should not be read as a promise of a particular level of cash available for debt repayment, dividends or other uses.

Balance sheet and dividend: useful context, not a buy signal

At FY2026 year-end, Cracker Barrel reported $337.2 million of total debt, consisting of 1.75% Convertible Senior Notes due 2030, and no outstanding credit-facility borrowings. It reported approximately $541.3 million in available credit-facility capacity, a 1.7x consolidated total leverage ratio and a 0.0x senior leverage ratio. The company also completed a sale-leaseback of 26 company-owned locations, generating approximately $77 million in proceeds used toward debt reduction. The proceeds reduced debt, but sale-leasebacks also involve lease obligations; debt alone does not capture all fixed commitments.

The board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share, payable November 12, 2026 to shareholders of record October 16, 2026. The company paid $1.00 per share in regular dividends in each of FY2026 and FY2025, but says dividends are subject to restrictions in its revolving credit facility. A declared payment is not a guarantee that the same rate will continue.

Buy, sell or hold: the decision depends on the evidence you require

The buy case

CBRL may appeal to an investor who believes the company can translate management’s FY2027 sales outlook into sustained traffic improvement, while keeping costs and capital needs under control. The case is stronger if future comparable restaurant sales growth is accompanied by better guest traffic, not just higher average checks, and if profitability improves without weakening financial flexibility. Even if the turnaround succeeds operationally, whether the stock is a good buy depends on the price paid and the investor’s return expectations.

The sell case

Selling or avoiding the stock is more defensible for an investor who sees continued traffic weakness, repeated misses against the recovery outlook, margin pressure from food and labor costs, or an unacceptable valuation. The FY2026 declines show that the business entered FY2027 with meaningful execution risk. A dividend can be part of an investment case, but it does not by itself offset falling earnings, a falling share price or an overvalued entry price.

The hold case

Holding can make sense for an existing shareholder who accepts turnaround uncertainty and wants to judge the recovery against upcoming operating results rather than react to one quarter. That is not a recommendation to wait indefinitely: define in advance what traffic, profitability, balance-sheet or valuation evidence would change your decision.

What to check before making a CBRL decision

  • Traffic and comparable restaurant sales: Look for traffic alongside sales, and separate average check and menu pricing from guest counts.
  • Guidance delivery: Compare quarterly performance with management’s FY2027 sales and adjusted EBITDA outlook.
  • Retail performance: Track whether retail sales improve alongside restaurant visitation, since the gift shop is part of the guest experience.
  • Costs: Compare commodity, wage and other cost trends with the assumptions in management’s outlook.
  • Financial flexibility: Review debt, liquidity, lease obligations, credit-facility restrictions and dividend declarations together.
  • Valuation: Check the current share price and assess it against a reasoned estimate of normalized earnings or cash generation. The results and filing cited here do not establish a current valuation or intrinsic value.

For comparisons with other stocks, use consistent measures of traffic and sales trends, profitability and cash generation, leverage and liquidity, dividend coverage, valuation and execution risk. Cracker Barrel competes across restaurant and retail categories—including family dining, casual dining, fast-casual, quick-service and supermarket alternatives—so differences in business model and fiscal calendar matter. The company’s risk disclosures also include labor recruiting and retention, consumer preferences and discretionary spending, weather and travel patterns, negative publicity, supply-chain disruptions, and reliance on a single distribution facility for most retail merchandise.
