Building Trust in Market Research With Soulbound Tokens (SBTs)

Soulbound tokens may strengthen market research credentials, but they do not prove that a participant is unique, honest, or representative. Here is the privacy-first architecture and decision framework.

Soulbound tokens (SBTs) could make parts of market research more trustworthy, but they are not proof that someone is a unique, honest, or representative participant. Their most defensible use is as a narrowly scoped, non-transferable credential: for example, proof that an approved issuer verified eligibility, that a respondent completed a particular study, or that an incentive was already paid.

The best design keeps identity details and survey answers off-chain, issues only minimal credentials, and adds expiration, revocation, recovery, consent, and appeal processes. SBTs should strengthen the credential and audit layer of research—not replace sampling methodology, fraud controls, privacy governance, or statistical quality checks.

The market-research trust problem

Online research has several different trust problems that are often treated as one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Duplicate participation: one person completes a study more than once.
  • Bots and synthetic responses: automated traffic produces apparently valid answers.
  • Incentive fraud: multiple accounts claim rewards or payment.
  • Eligibility fraud: respondents misstate their age, location, profession, purchasing history, or other characteristics.
  • Panel contamination: frequent respondents learn how to optimize their answers or appear in too many studies.
  • Weak provenance: a buyer cannot tell how participants were recruited, screened, or quality-controlled.
  • Privacy concerns: respondents do not want every research interaction tied to a permanent identity record.

An SBT may help with persistent credentials, study-specific eligibility, duplicate-suppression signals, incentive reconciliation, and auditable issuance. It cannot fix a biased sample, dishonest self-reporting, poor questionnaire design, weak incentives, or bad statistical inference.

What is an SBT?

An SBT is generally a non-transferable token or credential bound to a blockchain account. The account may represent a person, organization, device, or pseudonymous participant; the token alone does not establish which one.

ERC-5192 defines a minimal interface for a “soulbound” token built around ERC-721. A compliant implementation exposes locked(tokenId) to indicate that a token cannot be transferred. It also supports ERC-165 interface detection; the ERC-5192 interface identifier is 0xb45a3c0e. The proposal does not standardize identity, consent, reputation, privacy, revocation, or account recovery.

Other proposals explore different credential requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ERC-5484 addresses consensual issuance and burn authorization.
  • ERC-5516 supports multi-owner or cohort-style credentials and emphasizes issuer verification.
  • ERC-7574 explores using an authentication SBT to show that a decentralized-identity credential has been authenticated.
  • ERC-5727 discusses semi-fungible credentials and recovery-related concepts.

These are technical proposals, not evidence that market research has adopted a universal SBT standard.

What an SBT proves—and what it does not

An SBT can provide evidence that a particular issuer assigned a particular credential to a particular blockchain address. That is useful, but narrower than many descriptions suggest.

It does not automatically prove:

  • that one wallet equals one human;
  • that the wallet holder is the person originally verified;
  • that the respondent answered truthfully;
  • that the participant is representative of the target population;
  • that the issuer used a reliable verification process;
  • that the wallet was not shared, sold, compromised, or duplicated;
  • that an eligibility attribute remains current;
  • that a quality label is fair or statistically meaningful; or
  • that a blockchain transaction is legally equivalent to informed consent.

ERC-5516 warns that credential metadata alone is not trustworthy. A verifier should check the issuer address against a known issuer registry or another trusted record. In practice, the important question is not merely whether a token exists, but who issued it, under what rules, and whether its status is current.

Useful SBTs for market research

1. Eligibility credentials

An issuer could attest that a participant passed a particular eligibility check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • age above a required threshold;
  • residence in an approved region;
  • membership in a professional category;
  • recent purchase of a relevant product; or
  • membership in an approved research cohort.

The credential should prove only what the study needs. For example, proving age >= 18 is preferable to publishing a birth date. Eligibility should also have an expiry date when the underlying fact can change.

2. Participation credentials

A study could issue a credential such as “admitted to Study 2026-014,” “completed one response for this study,” or “eligible for a longitudinal follow-up.” A study platform could check whether a wallet already holds the relevant credential before allowing another response.

  • Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets

This can reduce repeated participation, but only within the system’s assurance limits. Someone may create multiple wallets or pass a weak identity check, so the correct claim is “may reduce duplicate participation,” not “eliminates fraud.”

3. Incentive credentials

A completion or payment credential could help reconcile one-time incentives. The research platform could record that a participant became eligible for payment, the incentive provider could pay the respondent, and the system could prevent a second claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This can protect both sides: the buyer receives a cleaner reconciliation trail, while the respondent has evidence that a completion event was recorded. It does not remove the need for ordinary payment records, customer support, or dispute handling.

4. Quality credentials

Possible examples include “passed an attention check,” “passed a consistency review,” or “no duplicate detected.” These are sensitive and should be narrowly scoped. A permanent public token saying that someone failed a study could expose, stigmatize, or unfairly blacklist a respondent.

Quality credentials should use criteria defined before fieldwork, be temporary or revocable where appropriate, and include a correction or appeal process. A disagreement, unusual answer, accessibility need, or flawed client rule should not automatically become a permanent reputation mark.

5. Portable research history

A portable reputation score is tempting but risky. A single global score can collapse very different studies and quality judgments into an unfair label. A better approach is a set of purpose-specific attestations, such as “completed a specified study under the stated protocol,” rather than a universal “trustworthy respondent” rating.

A privacy-first reference architecture

The strongest design is layered rather than purely on-chain:

  1. Verify off-chain. A panel operator or identity provider checks only the attributes required for the study.
  2. Explain the credential. Tell the participant what will be issued, who can see it, how long it lasts, whether it can be revoked, and how recovery works.
  3. Issue a minimal credential. Use a pseudonymous wallet or credential identifier and disclose only the necessary claim.
  4. Keep answers separate. Store raw survey responses and free-text answers in the research platform, not in a public token.
  5. Check access rules. The study platform verifies issuer, scope, expiry, status, and prior participation.
  6. Use a one-time session. Convert the credential presentation into a pseudonymous survey session so the client does not automatically receive the participant’s wallet address.
  7. Apply ordinary quality controls. Continue using attention checks, timing rules, consistency checks, device and session signals, duplicate detection, bot screening, and open-ended response review.
  8. Reconcile incentives. Record payment eligibility, pay through the selected provider, and prevent repeated claims.
  9. Close out carefully. Expire study-specific credentials, revoke credentials issued in error, and retain only records required for payment, audit, and legal obligations.

A useful trust chain is:

Identity provider or panel operator → verified attribute or event → credential issuance → study-access check → response collection → quality review → credential update or revocation.

Blockchain immutability protects the integrity of a record after issuance. It does not prove that the original verification was accurate or that the issuer acted honestly.

What should never go directly on-chain?

A hash is not automatically anonymous. If it can be linked back to a person or used to single someone out, it may still be personal data. Wallet addresses should be described as pseudonymous and potentially linkable, not anonymous.

Even a minimal credential can reveal more than intended through transaction history, wallet clustering, issuer visibility, and repeated use across studies. Avoid stable identifiers that enable unrestricted cross-study tracking.

The ICC/ESOMAR framework emphasizes appropriate consent for identifiable research data and limits on incompatible reuse. Its online-research guidance addresses sample sources, incentives, passive data collection, IDs, cloud storage, and online technologies. Those principles apply to credential issuance too: participants need to understand what is being recorded and how it may be used.

On-chain, off-chain, or hybrid?

Model Advantages Trade-offs
Fully on-chain SBT Public auditability, direct smart-contract checks, potential portability Public metadata leakage, difficult correction or deletion, fees, wallet friction, and easy cross-study correlation
Off-chain verifiable credential Better privacy, selective disclosure, easier correction and revocation, compatibility with conventional identity systems Requires issuer registries, trust lists, presentation infrastructure, and interoperability work
Hybrid Identity and answers remain private while a status, hash, or issuer record can be anchored for auditability More moving parts and a need to decide exactly what belongs on-chain

For most research teams, the hybrid model is the practical starting point: personal identity and responses off-chain, a privacy-preserving credential off-chain, and an on-chain anchor only where independent auditability or interoperability justifies the exposure.

The W3C’s identity work describes verifiable credentials as cryptographically verifiable records that can include issuer, expiry, public-key, and revocation information. A verifiable credential may therefore be a better fit than a public SBT when the main need is controlled proof of eligibility rather than smart-contract composability.

Wallet usability and recovery

Because an SBT is bound to an account, wallet operations become a participant-support problem. A respondent may lose a private key, change phones, share a device, use a custodial wallet, refuse blockchain interaction, or have a wallet compromised. A household may also contain several legitimate respondents using the same device.

Participants should not be excluded merely because they cannot or do not want to manage a crypto wallet. Embedded or custodial wallets can hide complexity, but they shift responsibility to the provider. The operator must explain custody, recovery, access, and data use clearly.

A workable system may require:

  • social or multi-party recovery;
  • burn-and-replace or reissuance procedures;
  • revocable and replaceable credentials;
  • key rotation and compromised-wallet handling;
  • a staffed support process;
  • an appeal and correction route; and
  • a non-wallet alternative where wallet requirements could bias recruitment.

ERC-5484 discusses consent and burn authorization. ERC-5727 discusses recovery and the danger that a compromised recovery mechanism could give an attacker control of credentials.

Security and governance checklist

A production implementation should address more than minting:

  • Support and test ERC-5192 and ERC-165 detection where relevant.
  • Allowlist approved issuer addresses and contract addresses.
  • Verify the chain, contract, issuer, schema version, and credential status.
  • Record issuance and expiry timestamps.
  • Define revocation, burn, replacement, and correction behavior.
  • Protect minting keys with multisignature controls and rotation procedures.
  • Monitor for unauthorized issuance and compromised issuer keys.
  • Prevent replay, duplicate issuance, incorrect recipient binding, and other contract errors.
  • Do not trust a token name, image, or metadata URL alone.
  • Define how wallet changes affect participation history and eligibility.
  • Document who governs schemas, issuer accreditation, quality rules, and appeals.

ERC-5516’s security guidance is especially relevant: verifiers should check issuerOf(tokenId) against an expected issuer because an impostor can copy credential metadata.

SBTs versus conventional research controls

For many projects, conventional panel and survey controls are the more mature and proportionate solution. Identity-checked panels can already provide targeting, quotas, incentive management, duplicate controls, and fraud screening without requiring respondents to use wallets. For example, Respondent describes identity verification, risk scoring, attention checks, duplicate controls, and survey integrations.

Survey platforms can also authenticate participants through contact lists, passwords, or external services. Qualtrics’ Authenticator documentation illustrates both the usefulness and limitations of ordinary authentication, including repeated responses and multi-device edge cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Centralized tools are usually easier to explain, operate, and support. An SBT becomes more compelling when several trusted research platforms need to recognize the same credential, when clients need independently verifiable issuance history, or when repeated eligibility checks create measurable value.

Criterion SBTs may help when They may be a poor fit when
Duplicate prevention Participation is one-time or cohort-specific The same person may legitimately join many studies
Portability Multiple trusted platforms need to recognize a credential One controlled platform already manages identity well
Privacy Claims are minimal and answers remain off-chain Stable wallet-linked attributes would be public
Respondent access Wallets can be abstracted away without excluding people The population is vulnerable, low-connectivity, or wallet-averse
Issuer trust Issuers are known and governed No reliable issuer registry exists
Longitudinal research A cohort must be recognized with limited disclosure Persistent identifiers create unacceptable tracking risk
Incentives One-time payment reconciliation is a major problem Existing payout controls already work at lower cost

How to evaluate an SBT pilot

The right success metric is better research validity at acceptable privacy and operating cost—not the number of tokens minted.

Run a limited pilot with an SBT or credential-enabled cohort and a conventional control group. Define the quality criteria before fieldwork and compare:

  • duplicate participation rate;
  • bot and automated-traffic rate;
  • identity-verification pass and failure rates;
  • completion and dropout rates;
  • time and cost per completed response;
  • incentive leakage;
  • false-positive rejection rate;
  • support burden and wallet-recovery requests;
  • respondent understanding of consent and data use;
  • demographic skew introduced by wallet requirements;
  • correlation between credential signals and independently reviewed response quality;
  • cross-study re-identification risk; and
  • whether the system improves client decisions, not merely technical activity.

A non-wallet fallback should be part of the pilot. Otherwise, the system may appear to improve fraud metrics simply because it excludes people who are less technically comfortable or less able to access the required tools.

Common failure modes

“One wallet equals one person”

Participants can create multiple wallets, use multiple accounts, exploit weak verification, or collude. Combine issuer-side deduplication, rate limits, device and behavioral signals, and study-specific controls. State the actual assurance level instead of claiming proof of uniqueness.

Public reputational harm

A failed-quality credential can become a permanent public blacklist. Keep negative outcomes private, temporary, narrowly scoped, appealable, and revocable.

Issuer compromise

If an attacker controls the minting key, fraudulent credentials may look valid. Use multisignature controls, monitoring, key rotation, allowlists, and emergency revocation.

Sample bias

Wallet setup can exclude precisely the respondents a study needs. Use embedded wallets, sponsor fees where appropriate, non-wallet pathways, and quota monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overclaiming privacy

Removing a name does not eliminate linkability. Consider wallet history, transaction patterns, issuer visibility, metadata, and repeated credential presentations.

Immutability without correction

A permanent record can permanently preserve a bad decision. Keep personal information off-chain and use expiry, revocation, replacement, and status references.

Research-quality theater

A blockchain badge can create confidence without proving that the sample is representative or the questionnaire is sound. Report recruitment methodology, exclusions, weighting, conventional quality indicators, and uncertainty alongside any credential system.

When not to use SBTs

SBTs are usually a poor first choice when a study is low-risk, a single platform already handles authentication, the respondent population is vulnerable or technically excluded, the data is highly sensitive, or the main problem is sampling rather than identity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are also unnecessary when a conventional verified panel, contact-list authenticator, or survey-platform control solves the actual problem at lower privacy and operational cost. Commissioning custom blockchain infrastructure should come only after a pilot shows that existing controls are insufficient.

Bottom line

SBTs can be useful as portable, non-transferable trust signals in market research. They may reduce duplicate participation, support one-time incentives, preserve proof of eligibility, and make credential issuance more auditable.

But an SBT proves only that a particular issuer assigned a credential to a particular account. It does not prove personhood, honesty, representativeness, or research validity. The defensible architecture is privacy-first and hybrid: verify off-chain, keep answers separate, issue minimal and purpose-specific credentials, verify the issuer and status, and provide recovery, revocation, expiry, consent, and appeals.
