It gathered farmer demand for seeds, fertilizer, and crop-protection products, negotiated with suppliers, and showed regionally available products and prices. Farmers could use those prices to negotiate directly or buy through Agroy. The model aimed to make input prices easier to compare and purchases less costly, but the company’s broad global vision had not yet been realized.
How Agroy’s agricultural marketplace was supposed to work
In a December 2017 Successful Farming profile, Agroy was described as a U.S. marketplace focused on agricultural inputs, especially seeds, fertilizer, and crop-protection chemicals. Farmers signed up for free and received email notices when products became available in their region. They could use the quoted prices as leverage in their own negotiations or purchase through Agroy.
Co-founder Brad McDonald said the company combined farmers’ buying power to negotiate better rates with suppliers. Agroy worked with seed dealers and companies, negotiated pricing, and set delivery boundaries based on where products could be supplied. For some products, the company also described paying large-acreage farmers to store inventory.
What the service offered—and what it did not
The practical promise was regional access to input prices and purchasing options, not a complete catalogue of every agricultural brand. At the time, not all major seed and chemical brands were available. The article’s vision of comparing agricultural products worldwide was still an aspiration, rather than a feature the source said was fully operating.

What the reported figures mean
Successful Farming’s 2017 article gives a snapshot of Agroy’s claims and reported reach at that time. These are historical figures, not current operating metrics or independently audited results.
| 2017 figure | What it referred to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $35 per ton | Dry-fertilizer savings attributed to Agroy | Company-reported example in Successful Farming; not a guaranteed or independently verified saving. |
| More than $2 million | Sales during Agroy’s first year | Reported by the company to Successful Farming; the article does not independently verify the figure. |
| 10,000-plus acres | Acreage threshold mentioned for farmers who might be paid to store products | Historical description of an arrangement reported in the 2017 article. |
| 8% of Finland’s farmland | Land whose farmers were said to order online through Agroy at wholesale prices | Figure attributed to McDonald in 2017; not independently verified in the article. |
| Hundreds of farmers across millions of acres | Size of the network described in the article | Historical reported scale. Most sales were in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska. |
McDonald summarized the stated purpose this way: “The goal is to save farmers money.” The reported savings illustrate the pitch, but they do not establish what an individual farmer would save. Actual value would depend on the product, location, delivery terms, and the price the farmer could obtain elsewhere.

How this model fits the broader direct-to-farmer idea
Agroy’s account centered on sourcing farm inputs. A separate example, DeHaat, illustrates a broader direct-to-farmer platform concept in India. In a 2021 Founder Thesis podcast interview, co-founder Shashank Kumar described a service bringing together agricultural inputs, crop advice, market linkage, and local service centers with digital access.
That comparison helps distinguish two possible meanings of an “Amazon for agriculture”: an online purchasing channel for farm supplies, or a wider platform that also connects farmers to advice, produce markets, logistics, and finance. DeHaat is a separate company and its interview is not evidence about Agroy’s services or current status. A like-for-like comparison of the two platforms is not established by these sources.

Is Agroy’s farm-input marketplace still operating?
The available account of Agroy’s agricultural marketplace is from 2017, and no current operating statistics for that marketplace are established here. A current Agroy-branded website describes stock broking and financial services. That alone does not establish whether it is connected to the agricultural-input startup or whether the farm marketplace still operates. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the 2017 marketplace as a service farmers can sign up for today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What farmers can learn from the marketplace concept
Agroy’s model highlights a practical problem in agricultural purchasing: prices and availability can vary by region, while delivery and supplier relationships constrain what a farmer can actually buy. A useful marketplace has to make those local realities visible, rather than simply list products online.

- Compare like with like: Check product specifications, volume, delivery, and timing—not only the headline price.
- Confirm local availability: A listed input is useful only if it can be delivered to the farm when needed.
- Ask how savings are established: A company-reported example is not the same as a guaranteed price or independently verified result.
- Look beyond the catalogue: Advice, human support, market access, logistics, and financing can matter as much as the ability to place an order.
For anyone looking for seeds to plant, the broad category farm seeds for planting is a possible starting point for browsing, not an Agroy listing or a recommendation of a crop or variety. Suitability depends on the crop and region, as well as the seller’s product details.
