Build A Rocket Boy announced its acquisition of UK studio PlayFusion on 10 December 2024, saying the deal would strengthen development of its upcoming games and user-generated-content tools. The announcement did not disclose the purchase price or transaction terms. There is also important current context: Build A Rocket Boy’s official website says administrators were appointed to two of its UK companies in September and October 2026, so the 2024 plans should be read as historical intent—not as confirmation that development is continuing on schedule.
What Build A Rocket Boy announced
The 10 December 2024 announcement said PlayFusion CEO and CTO Mark Gerhard would join Build A Rocket Boy as co-CEO alongside founder Leslie Benzies. Gerhard’s stated remit covered the company’s upcoming AAA games, user-generated-content (UGC) tools and business growth. The announcement described an intended management role and strategic rationale; it did not report a completed integration or a measured effect on game development.
The companies did not disclose the acquisition’s purchase price, transaction structure or integration milestones. The same announcement separately said Build A Rocket Boy had raised more than $110 million in a January 2024 Series D round. That financing figure is not the price paid for PlayFusion.
Why the companies said they were joining forces
Build A Rocket Boy framed the acquisition as a way to accelerate development of three projects: MindsEye, EVERYWHERE and ARCADIA. The company described MindsEye as a story-driven action-adventure thriller set in a fictional near-future America, with plans for console and PC. EVERYWHERE was presented as a connected entertainment platform for building, remixing and playing, while ARCADIA was described as proprietary tools for creating and publishing UGC.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Benzies said the ambition was to put creativity in players’ hands and enable them to build AAA-quality games and original online experiences. These were management’s goals, not evidence that the acquisition had already delivered those capabilities. The announcement also cited more than 250 million RuneScape player accounts in describing Gerhard’s prior role at Jagex; that historical account total is neither a current active-player count nor a measure of PlayFusion’s performance.
What PlayFusion is working on
PlayFusion’s current website says the studio is now part of Build A Rocket Boy and presents ASCENDANT as a squad-based tactical FPS set in a BioPunk world. The site points interested players to a closed-beta route. The acquisition announcement forecast a 2025 release for ASCENDANT; that date was a 2024 plan and should not be treated as a current release date.

Build A Rocket Boy’s administration notices
Build A Rocket Boy’s official website reports that joint administrators were appointed to Build a Rocket Boy Ltd. on 23 September 2026 and to Build a Rocket Boy Games Ltd. on 2 October 2026. The notice says the administrators manage those companies’ affairs, business and property. It names those two legal entities; it does not establish the status of every company in the wider group or PlayFusion’s separate legal status.
This later notice materially changes how to read the 2024 announcement: its descriptions of an upcoming pipeline are historical statements of intent, not confirmation of present development plans or delivery dates.

The MindsEye publishing change
On 23 March 2026, Build A Rocket Boy and IOI Partners said their MindsEye publishing collaboration had ended, effective 16 March 2026, and that Build A Rocket Boy would take sole publishing responsibility. They also said the announced Hitman crossover mission would not be released. This is relevant subsequent context for one of the games named in the acquisition announcement, but it does not establish an outcome of the PlayFusion acquisition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available information does—and does not—show
- Established: the acquisition announcement date, Gerhard’s co-CEO appointment and stated remit, and the projects the companies said the combination was intended to support.
- Not disclosed: the acquisition price, deal structure, integration milestones or a quantified result attributable to the acquisition.
- Not demonstrated by the announcement: that the acquisition caused a particular game to ship, improved development performance or delivered the promised UGC capabilities.
For a reader assessing the business significance, the clearest conclusion is limited: the companies announced a strategic combination and described its intended role in their game and UGC plans, but the announcement supplied no financial terms or outcome metrics. Later company notices provide significant operational context without proving whether the acquisition itself succeeded.
