The “nearly 10 million pounds” figure refers to the initial BrucePac recall announced on October 9, 2024: 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) later expanded it by 1,779,040 pounds, bringing the announced total to 11,765,285 pounds. This is a historical recall, not a new 2026 alert. Products were potentially adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes; the recall did not establish that every item was contaminated.
What products were recalled?
BrucePac, an establishment in Durant, Oklahoma, recalled ready-to-eat meat and poultry products made from May 31 through October 8, 2024. FSIS said the products were shipped to other establishments and distributors nationwide, then distributed to restaurants, schools, and institutions. Some recalled poultry may have been used as an ingredient in other ready-to-eat foods.
FSIS said routine testing found Listeria monocytogenes in finished products containing BrucePac ready-to-eat poultry; the agency’s investigation subsequently identified BrucePac ready-to-eat chicken as the source. The recall notice reported no confirmed adverse reactions from consumption of the products.
How can I tell if a product is included?
Check the package for establishment number “51205” or “P-51205” inside or under the USDA mark of inspection, then compare the product and label with the listings on the FSIS recall page. The page includes product and label information, retail distribution lists, and a school distribution list. A front-of-package brand name alone may not establish whether an item is covered, particularly when recalled chicken was used as an ingredient in another food.

What should I do if I have recalled food?
- Consumers: Do not eat the product. Throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
- Restaurants, schools, institutions, and other establishments: Do not use or serve it.
FSIS cautioned that recalled products could remain in commercial settings, stores, refrigerators, or freezers. For questions about meat, poultry, and egg products, call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854.
What are the symptoms of Listeria, and who is at greater risk?
CDC says invasive Listeria illness symptoms usually begin within two weeks after eating contaminated food, although timing varies. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. Infection during pregnancy can harm the pregnancy or newborn.

Pregnant people, newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness. CDC estimates about 1,250 Listeria infections and 172 deaths in the United States each year, and describes the infection as rare but serious. CDC advises contacting a healthcare provider if you ate recalled or outbreak-linked food and develop a fever along with symptoms such as fatigue and muscle aches. Tell the provider about the possible exposure. If you ate possibly contaminated food but feel well, CDC says you generally do not need testing or treatment; contact a healthcare provider if you have questions. Anyone who believes they are ill should seek medical advice.
