The announcement described an organizational merger—not an immediate replacement of every product. Broadcom said the portfolios would remain in their existing states for the near term; its March 2026 Symantec CBX announcement later showed one example of technology convergence.
What Broadcom announced
SecurityWeek reported that Broadcom created the Enterprise Security Group to manage its cybersecurity portfolio and bring together the Symantec and Carbon Black businesses. The stated strategy paired Symantec’s data and network protection with Carbon Black’s endpoint detection and response (EDR) and application-control technologies. Rob Greer, then vice president and general manager of the group, said the combination would bring network and data telemetry to Carbon Black to improve visibility and control for joint customers. SecurityWeek’s March 11, 2024 report is the source for the announcement and Greer’s comments.
The businesses had reached Broadcom by different routes. Broadcom completed its acquisition of Symantec’s Enterprise Security business on November 4, 2019, and said it would operate as the Symantec Enterprise division. Carbon Black came to Broadcom through VMware, which Broadcom had acquired shortly before the 2024 security-group announcement. Broadcom’s acquisition-completion notice gives the Symantec transaction date and purchase price.
How the portfolios fit together
The rationale was to connect security capabilities that operate at different, overlapping layers—not to claim that either portfolio covered only one area.

Did Broadcom merge or replace the products?
In March 2024, Broadcom described combining the businesses under one group, but SecurityWeek reported that the product portfolios would continue in their existing states for the immediate future. Greer said Broadcom initially planned to invest in research and development to improve and extend the life of products customers were using on-premises and across hybrid clouds. That described the initial posture; it is not a guarantee about subsequent funding, support, or product lifecycles.

Broadcom’s March 2026 announcement of Symantec CBX provides later evidence that capabilities from the two portfolios have been brought together in at least one cloud-based offering. It does not establish that every Symantec or Carbon Black product was replaced, combined, or changed, nor does it specify the effect on each customer’s licenses, support, pricing, or migration needs.

A documented customer-facing change was the Carbon Black Community’s planned transition to Broadcom Communities on May 6, 2024. Broadcom’s May 3 notice said the community would be visible within the Symantec Division. This establishes a community destination change, not a change to any customer’s product contract or deployment. Read Broadcom’s community transition notice.
