Who acquired Universal Genève, and when?
Breitling SA was the purchaser, and City Chain (Bermuda) Holdings Limited was the seller, according to the seller’s announcement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The share sale agreement is dated 12 December 2023. Universal Genève’s official history also describes the acquisition as occurring in 2023, but does not give a different agreement date.

The agreement covered the entire issued share capital of Universal Geneve SA and a related sale loan. The filing said that, after completion, the target company was intended to hold Universal Genève trademarks, related domains, and accounts. Read the Hong Kong Stock Exchange announcement.
How much did Breitling pay?
The transaction announcement stated total consideration of CHF 60 million, subject to adjustment under the agreement. A 2024 shareholder circular said CHF 20 million was payable before or at completion, with the balance payable afterward under the agreed terms. The figure is the transaction consideration—not an independently established market valuation of the brand. See the 2024 shareholder circular.

What did the acquired company do?
The filing described Universal Geneve SA as handling watch supply-chain management and distribution, trademark licensing, international warranty, and after-sales service. That description identifies the legal target’s stated activities and the brand assets it was intended to hold. It does not, on its own, show the size or capacity of a manufacturing operation.
The seller also reported revenue for the target company of CHF 14,000 for the year ended 31 March 2022 and CHF 23,000 for the year ended 31 March 2023, noting that this revenue came from after-sales services. These are figures for the legal entity as reported in the filing—not Universal Genève watch sales or total brand revenue.

Why did the acquisition attract attention?
Universal Genève’s official timeline traces the company’s founding to 1894, by Numa-Émile Descombes and Ulysse-Georges Perret. It highlights the Compax chronograph, introduced in 1936, and the Polerouter, developed by Gerald Genta and presented in 1954. These heritage models help explain collector interest in the brand’s return, but they do not determine what products Breitling will make or when.
Universal Genève’s official history quotes Partners Group co-founder Alfred Gantner describing the brand as “renowned for its manufacture movements and mythical models” and saying enthusiasts had long hoped for its return. See Universal Genève’s official history.

What does the deal mean for watches, prices, and availability?
