USDA’s broader 2025 world total was 62.248 million metric tons; Brazil’s share was about 20.2% and the U.S. share about 19.0%, calculations from the same table rather than separately published USDA shares.

USDA cautions that species coverage is not identical across every country in its global series: the table includes meat from other bovines for certain countries and carabeef (water buffalo) for India. The Brazil–U.S. comparison is still drawn from the same published series, but the full international ranking should not be read as a perfectly uniform count of cattle meat alone.
When did Brazil overtake the United States?
Reuters reported on January 7, 2026, that market estimates showed Brazil had surpassed the United States in 2025. At the time, official production figures were not yet due. Reuters cited private estimates, including Rabobank’s estimate of 12.5 million tons CWE, and reported that livestock consultant Mauricio Nogueira of Athenagro said Brazilian production had exceeded his forecast. Why was Brazilian production higher?
Reuters reported that Brazilian farmers sent more animals to slaughter amid strong export demand. It also described productivity changes—including faster insemination, faster fattening, and slaughter at younger ages—as factors behind higher output. These are reported industry explanations, not a quantified breakdown establishing how much each factor contributed.
Vinicius Barbosa, commercial manager at CMA’s Barretos feedlot, told Reuters: “Ten years ago, the average age of cattle slaughtered in Brazil was five years,” and “Now it is 36 months and going rapidly to 24.” He also said: “Feedlots do in 100 days for cattle what pasture does in between 18 and 24 months.” Those are Barbosa’s statements, not independently verified national averages. What is the outlook for 2026?

- Compare the same forecast vintage; agencies may update forecasts during the year.
