Boxing agent Rick Glaser said a contact in Dubai told him Floyd Mayweather was being held by the government court system over a substantial debt. That was second-hand information, not a verified court finding. Gervonta Davis had made a similar allegation days earlier; contemporary reporting then placed Mayweather at a Los Angeles basketball game on May 1, 2024. The available reports do not establish that Mayweather owed a debt or was detained.
What Davis and Glaser alleged
On April 26, 2024, Gervonta Davis alleged on social media that Mayweather was stuck in Dubai and owed people money. The JasmineBRAND reported Davis’s X post as saying, “He gotta pay them people that money back..if I’m lying tell him to go live rn He been stuck over there for a min too..” The outlet also transcribed an Instagram Story in which Davis alleged Mayweather could not leave because he had taken people’s money without doing what they had paid him to do. These were Davis’s claims, not established facts. The JasmineBRAND’s April 26 report said the dispute followed Mayweather’s social-media comments criticizing fighters for focusing on outfits and living check to check; Davis appeared to take the comments personally.
On April 29, boxing agent Rick Glaser posted that a contact in Dubai had told him Mayweather was being held by the government court system because he owed a substantial amount. Glaser added that the alleged debt was “unassociated with” boxing. His account was second-hand: the reported post did not provide an official record or independent documentation of what the contact said. Moguldom’s report reproduced Glaser’s statements.
Was Mayweather being held against his will in Dubai?
The available reporting does not verify that Mayweather was detained, prevented from leaving Dubai, or subject to a court order. A fact-check published by Moguldom reported that he appeared at a basketball game in Los Angeles on May 1, 2024. It also reported that he posted a Dubai photo captioned “Dubai Nights” on May 2. The reported Los Angeles appearance weighs against the claim that he remained stuck in Dubai at that point, but does not establish whether a debt existed or whether any earlier travel restriction had occurred. Moguldom’s May 2 fact-check covers that chronology.
