Boeing says the FAA approved the 777X program to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) 4B in the second quarter of 2026. That follows Boeing’s first-quarter report of approval for the preceding TIA 4A phase. The milestone is permission to begin another phase of testing—not a type certificate or proof that certification is complete. Boeing continues to forecast the first 777X delivery in 2027.
What Boeing reported about 777X flight testing
In its second-quarter 2026 results, Boeing reported that the FAA approved the 777X program to begin certification flight testing under TIA 4B. Boeing’s first-quarter 2026 results had reported approval to begin TIA 4A. The disclosures establish a sequence of phase approvals, with TIA 4B following TIA 4A.
“Restart” is stronger than what those announcements establish on their own. They do not describe an immediate prior halt in certification flights or specify when flights stopped and resumed. The precise documented development is that Boeing received approval to begin a later certification-test phase.
What TIA 4B approval does—and does not—mean
TIA stands for Type Inspection Authorization in Boeing’s descriptions of its certification testing. The FAA approval lets the program begin the specified phase of certification flight testing. Boeing’s releases do not detail TIA 4B’s engineering scope or provide a schedule of individual flights.
#1 Best Overall
- It does mean: Boeing reported FAA approval to begin certification flight testing under TIA 4B.
- It does not mean: the FAA has issued a type certificate, that certification is complete, or that the aircraft has entered service.
Approval to start a test phase and completion of aircraft certification are separate milestones. Boeing’s announcement reports the former, not the latter.
Why Boeing’s 2027 delivery forecast is not a confirmed date
In the same second-quarter 2026 results release, Boeing said, “The company continues to anticipate first delivery in 2027.” That is the company’s current forecast, not a confirmed delivery date. The TIA 4B approval does not, by itself, establish that certification will be completed in time for that forecast.

What aircraft the 777X program covers
Boeing’s 2025 annual report lists the 777-8 and 777-9 passenger aircraft and the 777-8 Freighter as members of the 777X family. It reported 560 777X orders as of December 31, 2025, net of ASC 606 adjustments. That is a dated program figure, not a current October 2026 order count.
The same report lists 1,776 deliveries for the wider 777 family as of December 31, 2025; that total is not a count of 777X deliveries. GE Aerospace identifies the GE9X as the engine for the 777X. Engine testing or certification is distinct from FAA certification of the complete aircraft.
