Boeing’s 17,000-Job Layoff Plan: What Happened and What’s Known

Boeing’s October 2024 announcement targeted a roughly 10% workforce reduction, estimated at about 17,000 jobs. The estimate was not a verified final layoff count.

Boeing announced on October 11, 2024, that it planned to reduce its total workforce by roughly 10%. The Associated Press described the target at the time as about 17,000 jobs, based on a workforce of approximately 170,000. That was a planned reduction—not confirmation that exactly 17,000 people were ultimately laid off.

What Boeing announced

In an employee message on October 11, 2024, Boeing said it planned to reduce its total workforce by roughly 10% over the coming months. The company did not state an exact number of positions in that announcement. The Associated Press translated the percentage into about 17,000 jobs, using a workforce figure of approximately 170,000 at the time. Boeing’s October 11 message; Associated Press coverage.

Accordingly, “17,000” is a contemporary estimate of the announced target, not a verified final count of employees separated under the plan.

Why Boeing said it was making cuts

CEO Kelly Ortberg presented the planned reduction as part of broader structural changes intended to restore Boeing and improve its long-term competitiveness. In the October 11, 2024 message, he wrote: “Beyond navigating our current environment, restoring our company requires tough decisions and we will have to make structural changes to ensure we can stay competitive and deliver for our customers over the long term.” Boeing’s message.

The announcement also came during a machinists’ strike. Boeing’s third-quarter 2024 filing said the IAM 751 work stoppage was significantly reducing aircraft deliveries and adversely affecting the company’s financial position, results of operations, and cash flows. That filing documents the business pressures surrounding the announcement, but does not establish that the strike alone caused the planned workforce reduction. Did Boeing actually lay off 17,000 workers?

The cited records establish that Boeing began implementing layoffs, but they do not provide a final plan-specific count. Reuters reported in November 2024 that Boeing had begun issuing notices to affected workers. That shows implementation started; it does not prove the entire approximate target was reached. Boeing’s 2025 Form 10-K reported approximately 182,000 employees as of December 31, 2025. That later total is not a measure of how many people were laid off under the October 2024 plan: it does not separate those layoffs from hiring, attrition, or other workforce changes. How to read the numbers

  • Roughly 10%: Boeing’s announced planned reduction in its total workforce in October 2024.
  • About 17,000 jobs: The Associated Press’s approximate translation of that percentage using Boeing’s reported workforce scale at the time.
  • Approximately 182,000 employees: Boeing’s later total workforce figure as of December 31, 2025—not a count of completed layoffs under the 2024 plan.
