That was a potential reduction—not confirmation that 400 workers were laid off. The report also discussed Elon Musk’s criticism of NASA’s Moon program, but did not establish an official decision to cancel Artemis. NASA’s later mission updates show the program continuing under a revised plan.
What did Boeing say about potential job cuts?
The February 2025 report, published by Yahoo News and Futurism, attributed the estimate of approximately 400 fewer positions by April 2025 to a Boeing spokesperson, as reported by The Register. The figure described a possibility for Boeing’s SLS team, not a verified total of completed layoffs. The article said the notice was intended to provide more than 60 days’ notice under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
The underlying Boeing notice and a state WARN filing were not located in the sources available for this account, and no follow-up established how many positions were ultimately eliminated. The report therefore supports describing a workforce warning, not stating that 400 people lost their jobs.
Why were SLS workers connected to the Moon program?
Boeing is the lead contractor for the SLS core stage, the rocket component that launches Orion. NASA’s April 2026 account of the Artemis III hardware rollout said the core stage was moving toward Kennedy Space Center. That later activity shows NASA continued SLS work after the 2025 warning, but does not establish what happened to Boeing’s staffing.

Artemis combines NASA’s SLS and Orion systems with commercial lunar landers. These elements perform different roles: SLS launches Orion, while commercial landers are intended to support lunar surface missions. The program is therefore not simply a choice between one “old” rocket and one commercial vehicle; its planned missions depend on integrating systems for distinct parts of the journey.
Did Elon Musk’s criticism mean Artemis was canceled?
No cancellation decision is established by the February 2025 report. It connected Musk’s public criticism of Artemis with discussion of a possible program review, but that is not evidence that NASA, Congress, or the administration adopted a cancellation decision. NASA’s subsequent announcements instead described an updated mission sequence and continued work on SLS and Orion.

What has happened to the Artemis schedule?
| Mission or plan | What NASA said | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Artemis II | Four astronauts flew aboard Orion, launched by SLS, on a lunar flight. | Launched April 1, 2026; NASA lists splashdown on April 10, 2026. |
| Artemis III | An Earth-orbit test of rendezvous and docking involving Orion and commercial landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin. | NASA’s May 2026 plan scheduled the mission for 2027. This is a plan, not a guaranteed date. |
| Artemis IV | The lunar surface landing objective in NASA’s then-current sequence. | NASA’s April 2026 rollout advisory gave 2028 as the target. It remains a target, not a completed or guaranteed landing. |
| Later lunar missions | NASA described a goal of at least one lunar surface landing every year after the added 2027 mission. | An agency objective announced in February 2026, not an achieved cadence. |
NASA described Artemis III’s Earth-orbit work as preparation for a later landing. Jeremy Parsons, an acting deputy administrator in NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, called it “an important stepping stone to successfully landing on the Moon with Artemis IV.” The function of the mission changed from the landing plan discussed in older coverage, but NASA still places it in the path toward a lunar landing.

A reported potential reduction can signal uncertainty for an affected team, but this account does not establish the eventual number of Boeing positions eliminated, identify individual outcomes, or provide a confirmed final layoff count. Nor does NASA’s continued SLS work answer those employment questions: program activity and contractor staffing are related, but one does not prove the other.

For readers assessing the headline, keep the claims separate: Boeing’s reported warning concerned potential positions in 2025; Musk’s criticism was not a cancellation decision; and NASA’s later schedule describes a revised mission sequence, with Artemis III planned as an Earth-orbit test and Artemis IV assigned the landing objective.
