Boeing Says FAA Concurred With 737 MAX Production Increase to 47 a Month

Boeing reported that its 737 program began transitioning to 47 aircraft a month with FAA concurrence. The rate milestone is separate from actual output, new-line certification and MAX variant approvals.

Boeing reported that its 737 program began moving from a production rate of 42 to 47 aircraft per month during the first half of 2026, with the Federal Aviation Administration’s concurrence. That is a regulatory milestone, not evidence that Boeing immediately built 47 MAX jets every month. The distinction matters to investors: a higher permitted pace may support future deliveries, but it does not by itself establish actual output, revenue or profit.

What Boeing reported about the production increase

In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Boeing said the 737 program began transitioning from 42 to 47 aircraft per month during the first half of the year with FAA concurrence. Boeing’s second-quarter results said the transition to 47 began in that quarter. These are Boeing-reported rate figures; they describe a change in production pace, not a confirmed monthly delivery or output count.

The FAA’s concurrence is significant because the agency had previously restricted production expansion after the January 2024 Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 door-plug event on a 737-9 MAX. The FAA’s oversight account says it investigated Boeing’s manufacturing compliance, increased on-site inspection and monitoring, and required a comprehensive action plan addressing systemic quality-control and production issues.

Why the FAA had restricted production expansion

The restriction followed concerns about manufacturing controls, not a general ban on operating or selling every 737 MAX aircraft. In its account of oversight after Flight 1282, the FAA described checking Boeing’s corrective actions and quality systems while monitoring production more closely.

  • It reviewed Boeing’s safety and quality indicators and monitored progress on the required action plan.

The FAA has said of the changes after January 5, 2024: “Following the lessons learned from January 5th, the FAA changed its oversight approach and those changes are permanent.” The agency’s account makes clear that concurrence with a higher rate did not mean the end of factory oversight.

What a higher rate means—and what it does not

A production rate is a pace at which a program is authorized or planned to build aircraft; it is not the same measure as completed aircraft, deliveries to airlines, or cash collected. Boeing’s filing supports saying that the program began transitioning to 47 per month with FAA concurrence. It does not establish that Boeing achieved that output in every month after the transition.

For a company, a sustained higher production pace can support more deliveries if aircraft are completed and accepted, but the rate figure alone does not show whether those conditions were met. It also does not establish a specific effect on Boeing’s earnings, cash flow or delivery schedule.

Three different FAA milestones to keep separate

The 737 rate transition, approval of a production line, and certification of an aircraft variant are separate matters. Conflating them can make the production news sound broader than it is.

Milestone What Boeing or the FAA reported What it does not establish
737 program production-rate transition Boeing reported a transition from 42 to 47 aircraft per month during the first half of 2026 with FAA concurrence. That 47 aircraft were actually produced in every subsequent month, or that every production line or variant had a separate approval.
New 737 North Line Boeing said low-rate initial production began on the new line in July 2026. That the line could make its first delivery before FAA production certification.
MAX-7 type certification The FAA announced on August 3, 2026 that it issued an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the MAX-7. That the MAX-10 was certified at the same time.

Boeing said the new North Line must be production-certified by the FAA before its first delivery. That requirement is distinct from the reported production-rate transition.

MAX-7 and MAX-10 certification status are not interchangeable

Boeing’s second-quarter results said MAX-7 and MAX-10 certification flight testing had been completed as of July 2026, while Boeing still anticipated certification during 2026 and first deliveries in 2027. Those were Boeing’s expectations, not a statement that both aircraft had received type certificates.

Separately, on August 3, 2026, the FAA announced that it had issued an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the MAX-7. The FAA said it had required flight-control software updates, improved flightcrew alerting and a redesigned engine anti-ice system before approving that variant. This MAX-7 certification action is not evidence of MAX-10 certification or the basis for the monthly production-rate concurrence.

What investors can reasonably take from the news

The announcement removes one regulatory constraint on increasing the 737 program’s pace, but it is not a stand-alone forecast for Boeing’s financial results. Investors assessing its significance should distinguish the regulatory permission from execution and delivery outcomes.

  • Track actual production and deliveries separately. The 42-to-47 figure is a reported rate transition, not a monthly output series.
  • Watch for line-specific approvals. The North Line’s first delivery depends on FAA production certification.
  • Keep variant milestones distinct. MAX-7 certification does not establish MAX-10 certification.
  • Include continuing oversight in the picture. The FAA described ongoing inspections, audits and monitoring alongside the rate transition.

Boeing also reported an order book of more than 7,200 aircraft in the 737 MAX family through the end of June 2026. That is a company-reported order-book figure, not an FAA finding and not a measure of near-term deliveries or revenue.
