Boeing reportedly plans to consolidate 787 engineering work in South Carolina, but the scope and impact on individual employees are not yet clear. Reuters reported on February 4, 2026, citing the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), that the company told employees of the plan in late January. SPEEA estimated about 300 jobs would move from Washington; that is the union’s estimate, not a Boeing-confirmed final staffing count.

Is Boeing moving 787 engineering jobs to South Carolina?

According to Reuters’ February 4, 2026 report, Boeing told employees it planned to consolidate 787 engineering work in South Carolina. Reuters attributed the account to SPEEA, which represents Boeing engineers in Washington.

The report does not establish the final scope or schedule. It also does not say whether affected employees will transfer, be laid off, or receive relocation assistance. SPEEA said it had requested details and assurances against layoffs and had not received a response from Boeing at the time of the report.

How many jobs could move from Washington?

SPEEA estimated that about 300 jobs would move from Washington, according to Reuters. Treat that figure as a union estimate—not a finalized Boeing headcount or a confirmed count of employees who will relocate. The report does not specify how many people, if any, would be offered transfers or other employment arrangements.

Reuters also reported that SPEEA represented about 16,000 Boeing employees under two contracts due to expire in October 2026. The union’s executive director, Ray Goforth, said the announcement and Boeing’s subsequent silence “casts a pall over upcoming contract negotiations.” That is Goforth’s assessment of the situation, not a description of a settled employment outcome.

How the engineering report relates to Boeing’s production ramp

The reported engineering plan is separate from Boeing’s earlier decision to consolidate 787 final assembly in South Carolina. Boeing began assembling 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft in Everett in 2007 and brought its North Charleston facility online as a second final-assembly line in 2010. In October 2020, Boeing announced that it would consolidate 787 production at North Charleston, estimating the move would begin in mid-2021. That announcement concerned production, not the later-reported engineering plan.

On November 7, 2025, Boeing said South Carolina was set to produce 10 787s per month in 2026. It also announced a site expansion of more than $1 billion and projected more than 1,000 new jobs over five years. These are company targets and projections; they do not establish that the production rate or hiring total has been achieved. Boeing said the 787 family had delivered more than 1,200 aircraft and had a backlog near 1,000 at the time of that announcement. Those figures were company-reported, not independent measures of future production.

Boeing’s November 2025 release linked the expansion to demand for the aircraft. Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Stephanie Pope said, “We continue to see strong demand for the 787 Dreamliner family and its market-leading efficiency and versatility.” The release also cited Boeing’s forecast that airlines would need more than 7,800 new widebody aircraft over the next two decades; that is Boeing’s market outlook, not an independently established forecast.

What current hiring shows—and what it does not

A Boeing vacancy posted October 5, 2026, describes a new 787 Propulsion Program Engineering team in North Charleston. The role covers engine, auxiliary power unit (APU), and fuel-system integration, with hands-on support for production and deliveries. It is evidence that Boeing is hiring for a 787 engineering function at the site, but one discipline-specific listing does not confirm the full scope of the reported consolidation.

What affected employees should know about relocation support

Boeing’s careers FAQ says relocation assistance may be available for eligible South Carolina roles. Possible benefits include shipment of household goods and up to two vehicles, limited storage, home-finding and final-move travel, and career assistance for a spouse or domestic partner. Packages can differ by role.

The FAQ does not establish that engineers whose work may move from Washington will be transferred or qualify for those benefits. Anyone considering a specific Boeing opening should confirm eligibility and the package directly with Boeing rather than assume the general policy applies.

What remains unresolved

  • The final engineering work to be consolidated and the implementation schedule.
  • Whether affected Washington employees will be offered transfers, other roles, or relocation assistance—or whether any will be laid off.
  • Whether Boeing will confirm the union’s estimate or provide the details SPEEA requested.
  • How the change may affect staffing beyond the specific North Charleston engineering vacancy.

The available reporting does not provide a productivity or engineering-quality comparison between Washington and South Carolina. It therefore cannot establish that either location is operationally superior.
