Boeing 737-7 Certified; 737-10 and 777X Still Await Certification

The 737-7 is certified, but the 737-10 and 777-9 were still awaiting certification as of September 16, 2026. Boeing was moving toward 47 737s per month, not yet a stable rate.

As of September 16, 2026, the FAA had certified Boeing’s 737-7, but the 737-10 and 777X were still in certification. Boeing said the 737-10 had finished flight testing, with documentation still to be reviewed; the 777-9 had completed half its planned certification testing. Boeing had begun shifting 737 production toward 47 aircraft a month, but its CEO said the rate was not yet stable.

How the programs compare

Program FAA certification status Latest milestone and outlook
737-7 (MAX-7) Certified August 3, 2026 The FAA issued an amended type certificate and updated production record. Boeing had reported flight-test completion in July.
737-10 (MAX-10) Not certified in the reviewed updates through September 16, 2026 Boeing said planned certification flight testing was complete July 28, but final documentation remained for FAA review. Boeing’s Q2 outlook expected certification in 2026 and first delivery in 2027.
777-9 (777X) No certification date established in the reviewed updates through September 16, 2026 Boeing reported 50% of planned certification testing complete in July and continued to target first delivery in 2027.
737 production Not a type-certification milestone Boeing began transitioning toward 47 aircraft per month in Q2 2026; the CEO said in September that production was not yet stable at that rate.

These are different milestones: type certification is a regulatory approval for an aircraft design, flight-test completion is one part of the certification process, and a production-rate transition describes factory output rather than approval to fly a new model.

Is the Boeing 737 MAX 7 certified?

Yes. On August 3, 2026, the FAA issued an amended type certificate for the 737 MAX-7 and updated Boeing’s Production Limitation Record. The FAA said the certificate confirms compliance with applicable design and safety requirements, while the updated production record authorizes Boeing to begin production. This is certification, not a statement that customer deliveries have begun. FAA statement, August 3, 2026.

The FAA described an extensive review that included flight controls, system safety assessments, human factors, flightcrew alerting, and other safety-critical areas. Required changes included flight-control software and flightcrew alerting updates, as well as a redesigned engine anti-ice system. The FAA said the changes provide pilots clearer information and warnings and prevent engine-inlet overheating that could weaken surrounding structure.

Boeing reported in July that the 737-7’s certification flight testing was finished and certification deliverables were 95% complete. By July 16, the program had accumulated 686 flight-test hours across 441 flights, along with 349 hours of ground testing. Those earlier progress figures are distinct from the FAA’s subsequent certificate issuance. Boeing program update, July 16, 2026.

When will the 737-10 be certified?

The reviewed updates do not establish a final certification date. Boeing said on July 28 that the 737-10 had completed its last planned certification flight and that flight testing was 100% complete. The program had logged 976 flights, more than 2,060 flight hours, and about 1,040 ground-test hours. Boeing’s September 16 update said final documentation for FAA review remained; completing flight tests did not itself certify the airplane. Boeing, July 28, 2026.

Boeing’s second-quarter outlook expected 737-10 certification in 2026 and first delivery in 2027. That was the company’s forecast, not an FAA commitment or confirmed delivery date. On September 16, CEO Kelly Ortberg said, “We’re in close coordination with them (FAA), and I think you’re going to see that certification very soon.” His remark did not announce that approval had been granted. What design work Boeing described

Boeing’s July update discussed testing an engine anti-ice (EAI) update after identifying rare conditions that could cause overheating, and an enhanced Angle of Attack (eAoA) system intended to simplify flight-deck cues and reduce erroneous warnings. Boeing said the EAI and eAoA changes would be introduced in production across 737 MAX models and retrofitted across the in-service MAX fleet. These are Boeing’s descriptions of the design work; they should not be read as a separate FAA certification announcement for the 737-10.

When will the Boeing 777X enter service?

Boeing continued to target the first 777-9 delivery in 2027, but that remained a company target. The reviewed updates provide no final FAA certification date. As of July 16, Boeing reported more than 4,800 flight hours across roughly 1,700 flights and 50% of planned certification testing complete. Remaining work included Type Inspection Authorizations (TIAs), including ETOPS-focused testing. Boeing program update, July 16, 2026.

A Boeing second-quarter update also reported approval of TIA 4B for the 777X. That is a certification-testing milestone, not a certificate or entry-into-service approval. The 2027 delivery target therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed date. Boeing second-quarter results, July 2026.

How many 737s is Boeing building per month?

Boeing began transitioning its 737 production system toward a rate of 47 aircraft per month during the second quarter of 2026. On September 16, Ortberg said, “We’re now driving at 47 a month, but we are not stable yet at 47 a month.” In other words, 47 per month described the rate Boeing was working toward, not a demonstrated, steady monthly output. Boeing, September 16, 2026.

Boeing’s second-quarter results reported an order book of more than 7,200 aircraft and more than 2,300 deliveries through June 2026 for the 737 MAX family. Those totals concern the family as a whole, not the 737-7 alone, and do not show how many airplanes were produced in a particular month. Boeing second-quarter results, July 2026.

What the FAA’s production oversight change means

Effective July 20, 2026, the FAA restored Boeing’s ability to issue airworthiness certificates at the end of production for 737 MAX and 787 airplanes. The agency said inspections, audits, and production monitoring would continue. This action concerns certificates issued after manufacturing; it does not mean the FAA completed or delegated type certification for the 737-10 or 777X. FAA, July 17, 2026.
