Boeing 717 Inspections: What the FAA’s New Airworthiness Directive Requires

Three FAA directives cover distinct Boeing 717 areas: the nose landing gear upper lock link, wing structure, and aft fuselage and tail. The requirements call for maintenance compliance, not a retirement forecast.

The FAA’s newer Boeing 717 inspection rule took effect January 2, 2026, and addresses cracks in the nose landing gear’s upper lock link. It is separate from earlier rules covering wing cracks and aft-fuselage and tail structure. These directives impose legally enforceable maintenance requirements, but they do not establish a retirement date or mean the 717 fleet has been grounded.

What does the FAA require Boeing 717 operators to inspect?

Three separate directives address different parts of the Boeing 717-200. They have different triggers, inspection schedules, and corrective actions; one rule’s hazard or cost should not be attributed to another.

Directive Area and inspection Trigger or identified hazard Actions and timing
AD 2025-21-05 Nose landing gear upper lock link assembly; repetitive crack inspections A reported nose-gear-up landing caused by failure of the upper lock link assembly Effective January 2, 2026. Applicable actions include replacing a cracked assembly with a serviceable one; replacement ends the repetitive inspections.
AD 2024-21-01 Left and right wing lower aft skins, external doublers, and rear spar lower caps; repetitive inspections for fuel leaks or cracks Cracks were found in the right wing during an investigation of a fuel leak Corrective action and reporting apply as specified when findings occur.
Separate 2024 aft-structure directive Aft-fuselage cant bulkhead and vertical-stabilizer rear spar structure A separate structural directive, not the wing-crack rule One-time inspection, plus conditional inspections if specified events occur; corrective action and a report are required if necessary.

Why does the nose-gear rule matter?

In AD 2025-21-05, the FAA says an unaddressed upper lock link problem could keep the nose landing gear from fully extending. The nose gear could remain retracted while the main gear deploys, limiting ground maneuverability and increasing runway-excursion risk. That risk statement concerns the landing gear directive, not the wing cracks.

What costs did the FAA estimate?

For AD 2025-21-05 only, the FAA estimated 117 U.S.-registered airplanes would be affected and inspection would cost $425 per inspection cycle per airplane. It estimated a necessary upper lock link replacement at $18,584 per product, but could not determine how many airplanes would need one. These are the agency’s estimates in the rule, not a current maintenance quote or the total cost of all 717 directives. See the final rule for its assumptions and compliance details.

Does this mean the Boeing 717 is nearing retirement?

No retirement date follows from these directives alone. An airworthiness directive identifies an unsafe condition and requires specified compliance work; it does not, by itself, show that continued operation is impossible, that the entire fleet is grounded, or that operators plan to retire their aircraft. The cited rules do not establish a worldwide fleet count, an operator retirement schedule, or fleet-wide plans.

The FAA defines an AD as a legally enforceable regulation issued under 14 CFR part 39 to correct an unsafe condition in an aircraft product. A directive is therefore a binding maintenance matter for affected aircraft—not a forecast of an aircraft model’s commercial future.

How can readers verify the controlling requirements?

The FAA’s airworthiness directives guidance explains the role of ADs. The agency identifies the Federal Register and FAA Dynamic Regulatory System as electronic sources for directives; the FAA notes that the Federal Register is the U.S. government’s official daily publication.

For compliance, operators and maintenance personnel need the full applicable rule and its incorporated aircraft-specific Boeing material. AD 2025-21-05 identifies Boeing Alert Requirements Bulletin 717-32A0043 RB and provides access details. The summary here is not a substitute for checking the controlling text, applicability, and required actions for a particular aircraft.
