What is the F82 M4, and do its specifications vary?
The F82 is the M4 coupe from BMW’s F-generation lineup; the related F80 is a sedan and the F83 is a convertible. Engine output and equipment depend on model year, trim, options, and market, so confirm a specific car’s configuration rather than applying one specification to every F82.
BMW Canada’s 2020 product guide identifies the F82 M4 Coupe as rear-wheel drive with the S55B30T0 engine. Its Canadian-market figures are:

Those figures reflect a different source-era and market convention; they should not be mixed with the later Canadian figures as though they describe the same configuration.

The F82 line was offered with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, according to the PistonHeads guide. BMW Canada’s cited 2020 guide lists DCT for the coupe configurations it covers. Verify the actual car’s transmission and equipment by VIN and vehicle documents.
Which F82 M4 year or trim should you choose?
There is no well-established universal “best year” in the sources for this buying decision. In particular, they do not establish a universally safe model-year cutoff for crank-hub concerns. Compare cars by condition, records, build date, equipment, and intended use rather than assuming a later year is automatically the better purchase.

- Use case: ask about track use and modifications. They warrant closer investigation, but neither alone proves that a car is damaged.
Is the S55 crank hub a buying concern?
Yes—as an inspection and history question. Several used-car guides flag crank-hub slippage on the S55, with particular attention to early examples and cars that have been tuned or used hard. The available evidence does not establish a reliable population-wide failure rate, a universally safe year, or a single factor that predicts which car will have a problem.
Ask for the car’s build date and invoices for any preventative or remedial crank-hub work. Have a BMW/M-car specialist review the relevant history and check for timing-related faults. Do not treat a seller’s unsupported assurance, or the absence of a warning light, as proof of the hub’s condition.

What should a pre-purchase inspection cover?
Arrange an independent inspection with a specialist familiar with BMW M cars. A listing, service-book stamp, or diagnostic scan cannot establish the car’s present mechanical condition. Ask the inspector to document findings and distinguish urgent faults from maintenance or wear items.
Engine and crank-hub history
- Review maintenance invoices and ask about tuning, track use, and engine repairs.
- Inspect for oil leaks, including around the valve cover and oil-filter and oil-pan gasket areas. These are points to check, not evidence that every M4 leaks.
- Review crank-hub work and timing-related faults in light of the car’s build date and records.
Transmission, differential, and driveline
- Check transmission operation and look for leaks; review DCT service and condition where fitted.
- On a manual car, have the clutch assessed for wear.
- Inspect the differential for leakage or play and ask about related repairs.
Brakes, tires, suspension, and cabin
- Identify the exact brake setup and assess wear on discs, pads, and other hardware. Carbon-ceramic brakes have different replacement considerations, so confirm the installed equipment and its remaining service life.
- Check wheels and tires, suspension, and interior condition.
- Use the VIN and brake-option details to confirm any replacement part fits; a generic M4 parts listing may not suit every F82.
How do you check recalls before buying?
Run the car’s actual VIN through the recall authority for its jurisdiction, then confirm that any applicable safety recall has been completed. For a U.S.-market vehicle, the NHTSA recall lookup provides manufacturer recall information; NHTSA explains that safety recalls require a manufacturer remedy. Ask for completion records or confirm the remedy with the relevant dealer. A recall search is vehicle- and jurisdiction-specific, so do not assume another car’s result applies.
