BMO currently lists a $5 fee per transfer, subject to waivers for certain bank plans and transfers to BMO in the United States; exchange-rate costs and possible recipient-bank fees also matter.
What BMO Global Money Transfer is
BMO launched Global Money Transfer on December 20, 2021, as a digital service for sending money internationally through its mobile banking app. The launch features included saved recipients through Send Again, a currency watchlist and transaction-status notifications. The service is now described by BMO as available through both BMO Mobile Banking and BMO Online Banking, with transfers to over 70 destinations. BMO also advertises real-time exchange-rate information, saved-recipient functionality and status notifications. BMO’s launch announcement describes the original offering; the current Global Money Transfer page sets out the present service information.
How to activate and send a transfer
Activate the service
BMO’s FAQ says customers who need to activate Global Money Transfer can call the number on the back of their BMO Debit Card, visit a branch or contact a BMO Relationship Manager. The available information does not establish that every BMO account is eligible, so confirm eligibility with BMO before arranging a transfer.
Send through BMO banking
Once activated, use BMO Mobile Banking or BMO Online Banking to set up the international transfer. BMO provides exchange-rate information during the process and lets customers reuse saved recipient details with Send Again. Review the recipient information and the amount, fees and exchange rate shown before submitting; incomplete or inaccurate details can cause a transfer to be rejected or delayed.

Current fees, limits and delivery time
| Term | What BMO currently states |
|---|---|
| Service fee | $5 flat fee per transfer. BMO says it waives the fee for transfers to BMO in the United States and for customers with a Premium, Platinum, Performance, Plus or Blue Rewards plan. If the sending account is in U.S. dollars, BMO charges the fee in U.S. dollars. |
| Exchange rate and other charges | Standard foreign-exchange rates apply. A recipient financial institution may charge its own fee. The transfer also counts toward the monthly transaction limit in the customer’s bank plan. |
| Minimum transfer | C$100. |
| Maximum transfer | Depends on the customer’s daily debit-card limit. BMO says the limit can be checked in online or mobile banking. |
| Delivery estimate | Two to five business days in most instances. Timing and availability of funds depend on the receiving institution. |
These current terms are described in BMO’s product information and Global Money Transfer FAQ; check them before sending because fees and service terms can change. A fee waiver does not remove the foreign-exchange cost or any fee charged by the recipient’s institution.
What happens if a transfer is delayed, rejected or completed
BMO says a transfer may be held, delayed or rejected because of incomplete or inaccurate information or regulatory, legal, fraud or anti-money-laundering checks. Its FAQ describes the statuses as in progress, success and rejected. If a transfer is rejected, BMO says it returns the transfer amount and service fee to the account. Once a transaction is completed, it cannot be cancelled. For current status details or a problem with a specific payment, contact BMO.

How to judge whether it suits your transfer
BMO lists Global Money Transfer alongside wire transfers and Western Union as ways to send money internationally, but that listing alone does not establish which option is cheaper or faster for a particular destination. Compare the amount the recipient will receive after conversion and all fees, whether the destination and payout method are supported, the delivery estimate, transfer limits and what happens if a payment is rejected or needs to be cancelled. The recipient institution and destination can affect both cost and timing.

The launch announcement described a $5 fee and said newcomers to Canada, BMO Premium customers and Private Banking customers would continue to receive transfers without a service fee. Those were launch-era terms, not a guide to current eligibility for a waiver. BMO’s current FAQ instead lists the plans and U.S. BMO transfer condition shown above. At launch, BMO Head of Everyday Banking, Segments and Customer Growth Gayle Ramsay said: “With most of our customers being digitally active, we’re excited to offer a convenient new feature to send money internationally through the BMO mobile banking app.”
