Card values are straightforward, but payouts and player options vary by table. Check the posted rules before you play: a strategy chart or house-edge estimate only applies when its assumptions match the game in front of you.
How blackjack works
Each hand is a contest between a participant and the banker, usually the casino. The aim is to finish with a total of 21 or less that beats the banker’s hand. Going over 21 means the hand has exceeded the target. The exact sequence of play, available decisions and payout are set by the rules for that game.
Blackjack is a bankers’ game, so the casino and player do not have equal chances overall. That does not determine who wins a particular hand: individual results can vary widely.
How card values are counted
In Spain’s consolidated national blackjack regulation, card values are specified as follows. These are the values in that Spanish rule set, not a guarantee that every casino or online version uses identical rules.

The Spanish regulation’s default game uses six English decks, while listed variants may set a different number. The operator’s rules also specify details such as the payout coefficient. These provisions describe Spain’s regulation, last updated 30 July 2014; they should not be treated as universal blackjack rules. (Boletín Oficial del Estado, Orden EHA/3088/2011.)
What to check before choosing a table
Two games both called blackjack can have different rules, which can change the decisions available and the expected return. Read the table rules rather than relying on the game name or a strategy chart alone.
- Payout for a winning hand: Check the posted payout coefficient, including any special payout stated for a blackjack.
- Number of decks: Confirm how many decks are used. The six-deck default in the cited Spanish regulation is not a universal standard.
- Dealer rules: Look for the rules governing how the banker plays their hand.
- Player options: Check whether surrender, doubling and splitting are allowed, and what conditions apply.
- Applicable rule set: Confirm whether the posted rules are operator-specific and, if relevant, which jurisdiction’s regulation applies.
If a rule is unclear, ask the operator before placing a bet. A chart built for a different payout, deck count, dealer rule or set of options may recommend decisions that do not fit your table.
What “house edge” means—and what it does not
The UK Gambling Commission defines house edge as the percentage a casino would expect to keep on average from each hand or spin under normal patterns of play. It is a long-run average, not a prediction that the casino will win a particular hand or session. A player can win or lose in the short term, and short sessions can vary widely.

There is no single house-edge percentage that can be applied responsibly to every blackjack table. The figure depends on the game’s specific rules and the assumptions about how it is played. Without verifying those details against an authoritative source for the exact game, avoid treating an estimate as your table’s edge.
Can basic strategy beat the house?
Basic strategy is a set of recommended decisions for a particular combination of rules and hand situations. It can help a player make more consistent choices, but a chart is only relevant when its assumptions match the table. Strategy does not guarantee a profit, and practicing does not remove the house edge.
Be cautious of betting systems that claim to guarantee winnings or overcome the casino’s advantage. Changing bet sizes does not change the rules of the game or ensure a favorable result. Decide in advance what you can afford to lose, and do not treat gambling as a way to earn or recover money.

California’s rules for blackjack-style games have faced a significant legal challenge. The California Department of Justice reports that a San Francisco Superior Court writ issued on 8 July 2026 prohibited enforcement, implementation or effect of specified Bureau of Gambling Control rules concerning blackjack and player-dealer games. The DOJ says final judgments on 10 July 2026 found the Bureau lacked statutory authority to issue those regulations, and that the Bureau appealed; its page describes the timeline as suspended pending further developments.
