Blackhawk Network (BHN) agreed to acquire digital rewards company Tango Card on January 31, 2024, and announced that the acquisition was complete in May 2024. BHN said the deal would pair Tango’s digital-first business rewards platform with BHN’s global reach and broader gift-card and rewards capabilities. The companies described the strategic fit; the announcements do not establish what benefits have since been realized.
What happened in the Blackhawk Network–Tango Card deal?
BHN announced a definitive agreement to acquire Tango Card on January 31, 2024. At the time, BHN said the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period had expired and no antitrust approvals remained, while approvals related to money transmitter licenses were still pending. BHN projected a later-2024 closing. In May 2024, it announced that the acquisition had been completed.

The original announcement therefore described a proposed acquisition, not the current status of the transaction. BHN’s completion announcement updated that status.
Why did Blackhawk Network say it wanted Tango Card?
BHN’s stated rationale was to combine complementary capabilities: its scale, global connectivity, and range of branded payment and rewards products with Tango’s API-led digital incentives platform and customer support. BHN’s post-acquisition explainer described the combination in similar terms. Those are the companies’ stated strategic aims, not independent evidence that integration has produced particular results.

In BHN’s January 31, 2024 announcement, CEO and president Talbott Roche said Tango had pioneered a digital-first reward experience through its API, service, and global content, calling it a fit for BHN’s portfolio. Tango founder and CEO David Leeds said joining BHN would help the company continue innovating and support customers’ evolving global needs. Both comments expressed the executives’ expectations at announcement.
What does Tango Card do for businesses?
Tango provides tools and support for businesses running loyalty, reward, promotional, and incentive programs. Its current business terms describe a Rewards as a Service API and dashboard through which customers can order reward URLs, codes, or tokens, either in bulk through the API or individually through the dashboard. The terms require programs to be pre-approved and restrict misleading program descriptions and unapproved uses.

That service is aimed at organizations distributing digital rewards to recipients—not at consumers looking for a personal payment card. The current terms describe the service today and should not be treated as a complete record of every feature available when BHN announced the deal in 2024.
What is known about the purchase price and Tango’s growth?
BHN’s official deal announcement and post-acquisition explainer do not state a purchase price or other consideration. The transaction’s valuation is therefore not established in those materials.

The January 2024 announcement said Tango had grown 800% since FTV Capital first invested in 2018. BHN did not define the growth measure, so the figure cannot be read from that announcement as a revenue, customer, user, or other specific growth rate.

The stated logic was that Tango’s digital rewards tools and support could sit alongside BHN’s broader reach and product portfolio, potentially giving the combined business a wider set of capabilities for business reward programs. The announcements establish the companies’ rationale and the transaction’s completion, but do not by themselves show how services, customer terms, or program performance changed after closing.

For a business evaluating Tango’s service, the relevant practical details are the current program approval requirement and the available ordering routes described in Tango’s terms. A company considering a program should confirm current eligibility, terms, and service details directly with the provider before committing.
