There is no reliable, comparable list of the “10 most expensive” black-market kidneys. Published figures mix estimates of what buyers pay with reports of what people receive, and they come from different countries, years, and kinds of evidence. The useful takeaway is the gap: reported buyer spending can be far higher than seller compensation, while neither figure is a dependable current market price.
Why a “top 10” kidney-price ranking would be misleading
The available figures do not form a standardized dataset of ten verified transactions. A buyer price, a payment to a person whose kidney is removed, and profits attributed to intermediaries or operations are different measures. Combining them into one ranking would make unlike figures appear comparable.
UNODC’s 2025 publication brings together selected reports of payments in particular countries alongside buyer-price estimates from earlier publications. It does not establish a current, country-by-country price list. The figures below are best read as attributed reports, not quotes, typical rates, or proof of a completed transaction.
What published estimates say about buyer spending and seller payments
The estimates illustrate why the role attached to a number matters. UNODC’s 2024 working-group document estimates that people identified as victims may receive $1,000–$20,000, while profits in some cases may reach $200,000 per organ. It also notes that donors in some consulted court cases received nothing. These are reported estimates and case findings, not universal prices.

A 2026 George Mason University summary of a study based on more than 50,000 news articles published over 23 years says buyers typically pay $50,000–$120,000 and sellers often receive less than 10% of that amount. The university describes a poorly measured market assembled from reported cases, not a comprehensive ledger of transactions. UNODC’s 2025 publication also cites a $50,000–$120,000 buyer estimate from a 2017 Global Financial Integrity report and an estimate of up to €150,000 attributed to the European Parliament in 2015. Those older estimates are not current verified prices.
| Reported figure | What it describes | Source and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000–$20,000 | Estimated amount received by people identified as victims | UNODC, 2024; reported estimate, not a standard payment |
| Up to $200,000 per organ | Profits in some cases | UNODC, 2024; distinct from seller compensation |
| $50,000–$120,000 | Typical buyer payment in a study summary | George Mason University, 2026; summary of reported cases, not a live quote |
| Less than 10% of buyer payment | What sellers often receive, according to the study summary | George Mason University, 2026; not a rate for every case |
| Up to €150,000 | Buyer-price estimate cited by UNODC | European Parliament estimate from 2015, as cited by UNODC in 2025; not a current verified price |
Country examples are reported payments, not an expensive-to-cheapest list
UNODC’s 2025 publication recounts selected seller-payment reports: $2,000–$6,000 in Kenya, around $5,000 in Mexico, and $1,000–$2,000 in India. It also describes another case in which Romanian and Brazilian donors received $6,000 and Israeli donors received $20,000. These examples differ in context and evidence; they do not establish present-day national prices or support a ranking of the most expensive kidneys.

The same publication cites a conservative annual trafficking-revenue estimate of $840 million–$1.7 billion from prior work. That is an estimate, not a measured annual total, and it should not be confused with the price of one kidney or the amount paid to a donor.
Why the money can differ—and why payment does not settle consent
Reports may describe money at different points in an exploitative chain. A buyer’s spending is not the same as what a person whose organ is removed receives. Intermediaries or other participants may account for part of the difference; the sources do not establish one consistent allocation across cases. Some consulted court cases documented donors receiving no payment at all.

Trafficking in persons for organ removal involves exploitation such as recruitment through false promises or abuse of vulnerability. UNODC’s 2024 working-group document also warns that victims may not be adequately informed about medical consequences. Receiving money does not by itself establish free and informed consent or rule out trafficking: the 2024 U.S. State Department report excerpt says a person may still be a trafficking victim or suffer human-rights abuses after payment.
Kidneys are the most frequently transplanted organs in detected cases of trafficking for organ removal, according to UNODC’s 2024 working-group document; parts of livers appear to a lesser extent. That finding describes detected cases, not every illegal organ transaction.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Reported-case research can show patterns and expose the gap between buyer spending and seller compensation, but it cannot reliably supply a current price menu. The George Mason University summary says its researchers analyzed more than 50,000 news articles over 23 years; that is a large corpus of reporting, not a complete record of hidden transactions. Country anecdotes and older estimates add context, but they do not become comparable simply because they are expressed in dollars or euros.
UNODC’s 2025 publication recounts a hospital in Nairobi saying that “How much for my kidney?” was the question it was asked most frequently, and that in 2022 the hospital posted “We Don’t Buy Kidneys!” This is an anecdote reported by the publication, not a representative survey or evidence of a standard market price.
