Bottom line: shoppers should not have expected a widely available, heavily discounted RTX 4090 on Black Friday 2024. Nvidia’s flagship launched at a $1,599 US MSRP, but tightening supply and prices above MSRP made a major clearance sale unlikely. The realistic opportunities were limited partner-card discounts, open-box or used inventory, discounted RTX 4090 prebuilts, and better promotions on alternatives such as the RTX 4080 Super.

Why the RTX 4090 was unlikely to get a major Black Friday discount
The RTX 4090 launched at a $1,599 US MSRP. That price applied to Nvidia’s Founders Edition; partner cards from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and other manufacturers could cost more.

By late 2024, reports indicated that RTX 4090 inventory was becoming difficult to find and that some cards were selling above MSRP. Limited supply gave retailers less reason to cut prices aggressively. A product nearing the end of its generation does not automatically receive clearance pricing if remaining stock is scarce.
#1 Best Overall
- 16,384 NVIDIA CUDA Cores
- Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and variable refresh rate as indicated in HDMI 2.1A
- New streaming multiprocessors: up to 2x power and power efficiency
- Fourth generation tensor cores: up to 2x AI power
- Third-generation RT cores: up to 2x ray tracing performance
That made the most likely outcomes:
- A temporary $50–$150 reduction on a particular partner model.
- A game, software or other bundle instead of a large cash discount.
- Open-box, refurbished or used stock at a lower price.
- A better effective price inside a complete gaming PC.
- No meaningful discount at all.
A discount of $200 or more was possible, but it would likely have been limited to a specific retailer, model or unusual inventory situation.
What would have counted as a genuine deal?
These are practical decision thresholds, not official Nvidia pricing rules:
| Price and condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Below $1,599 new | Exceptional for a genuine, complete card with normal warranty and returns. |
| Below $1,500 new | Potentially a strong deal, but verify the seller, model, warranty and price history. |
| Below $1,300 new | Highly unusual in the 2024 market. Treat it as a scam, incomplete listing or marketplace-risk warning until proven otherwise. |
| Used or open-box below those prices | Not directly comparable with new stock; account for warranty, condition and return protection. |
Never judge the offer solely by its advertised percentage discount. Some 2024 GPU “Black Friday” reductions were not genuine historical lows. Compare the price with the card’s 30-, 90- and 180-day history, as well as competing retailers. TechSpot’s GPU pricing analysis documented why sale labels can be misleading.

How to check an RTX 4090 offer before paying
- Identify the exact model. A Founders Edition, Asus TUF, MSI Suprim and other AIB cards can have different dimensions, coolers, warranties and prices.
- Check the real seller. Distinguish retailer-direct stock from a third-party marketplace listing. The retailer’s logo on the page does not necessarily mean it is the seller.
- Confirm the condition. New, open-box, refurbished and used cards have different risks and return rights.
- Verify the price history. Compare the claimed sale price with recent market lows, not an inflated list price.
- Read the return and warranty terms. Confirm who handles defects, whether the manufacturer warranty transfers, and how long you have to test the card.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include shipping, sales tax, required power-supply upgrades and any membership, rebate, financing or trade-in condition.
- Inspect the listing. A suspiciously cheap offer may be for an empty box, water block, accessory or incomplete bundle rather than a working graphics card.
Technical checks that can turn a bargain into an expensive mistake
The RTX 4090 has 24GB of GDDR6X memory, but partner cards vary substantially. Before buying, confirm:
- Physical length, thickness and case clearance.
- Power-supply capacity and suitable cabling.
- Whether the card uses a 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 connection, or an adapter.
- Safe cable routing and adequate clearance around the connector.
- PCIe compatibility with the motherboard.
- Manufacturer warranty and transfer rules.
- A return period long enough to test temperatures, stability and performance.
Do not buy a generic power adapter or a low-quality PSU simply because a listing describes it as “4090 compatible.” The cheapest GPU price is not the cheapest complete upgrade if it also requires a case, PSU and cabling.
Was the RTX 4080 Super a better Black Friday target?
For many buyers, yes. The RTX 4080 Super occupied a lower price tier and was more likely to receive ordinary retail promotions than a scarce RTX 4090. Black Friday GPU coverage identified it as a more plausible sale candidate.
It was not an equivalent replacement. The RTX 4080 Super has 16GB of memory rather than the RTX 4090’s 24GB and is weaker in demanding 4K, ray-tracing, rendering and compute workloads. The 4090 made more sense for buyers who specifically needed maximum performance, 24GB VRAM, CUDA-dependent software, local AI workloads or heavy rendering.

Compare the complete cost, including power, cooling and warranty, rather than paying a large premium for performance that the workload will not use.

Would the RTX 5090 launch have made the RTX 4090 cheaper?
There were two competing possibilities.
Why prices could fall
- Retailers could clear remaining inventory.
- Buyers could shift toward the newer architecture.
- More RTX 4090 cards could enter the used market.
- Some customers might reject a 4090 priced close to its successor.
Why prices could stay high or rise
- Scarce remaining stock would reduce retailers’ need to discount.
- The 4090’s 24GB VRAM would remain valuable for gaming, rendering and local AI.
- A new-generation launch could itself face shortages.
- A high successor price would leave room for sellers to keep the older flagship expensive.
Nvidia announced the RTX 5090 on January 6, 2025, with availability scheduled for January 30 at a $1,999 Founders Edition MSRP. Nvidia claimed up to twice the RTX 4090’s performance in selected workloads, but that claim included the new architecture and DLSS 4 features and should not be treated as a universal gaming result. See the Nvidia announcement.
The key lesson was that “a new generation is launching” and “the old flagship will become cheap” are not equivalent assumptions.
Buy now, wait or choose another route?
Buy a 4090 if:
- You need the performance for a build now.
- You specifically need 24GB VRAM or RTX 4090-level compute.
- You find an in-stock card from a reputable seller at a price within your predetermined maximum.
Wait if:
- Your current GPU meets your needs.
- You can compare actual successor pricing and availability in January 2025.
- You are unwilling to pay above your budget for limited late-generation stock.
Consider alternatives if:
- Your priority is high-end 4K value rather than maximum performance.
- You can use 16GB of VRAM, making the RTX 4080 Super a reasonable target.
- You would benefit from a less expensive current-generation GPU or a Radeon alternative.
- You are open to a prebuilt system whose total value exceeds the price of a standalone card.
Standalone card versus prebuilt, open-box and used options
A complete RTX 4090 PC could offer a better effective GPU price than a standalone card, but value every other component separately: CPU, motherboard, memory, storage, power supply, cooling and warranty. A cheap system with an underpowered CPU, poor airflow or an inadequate PSU is not automatically a bargain.
Open-box and refurbished inventory can reduce the price while preserving some retailer protection, but the terms vary. Used local sales may be the cheapest way to obtain 24GB, yet they carry more risk. Ask for the serial number, proof that the card works, evidence of temperatures under load and a meaningful inspection or return period. Be cautious with cards that have an unclear repair or mining history.
In 2024, Best Buy’s main Black Friday sale began November 21, with additional doorbusters and flash deals. That timing was useful for monitoring stock, but it was not evidence that Best Buy would offer a discounted RTX 4090. Treat listings from Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg, Micro Center, Walmart and major PC builders separately by seller, condition and fulfillment method. Marketplace pricing can be dramatically different from retailer-direct pricing; a high displayed price is not a useful market benchmark.
The practical verdict for a 2024 shopper
Do not wait for Black Friday solely because you expect a large RTX 4090 price cut. Set a maximum all-in price, monitor reputable sellers and compare the exact card’s recent history. If a legitimate, warrantied card appears at a fair price, buying it may be wiser than waiting for a lower price that never arrives.
If the price is too high, the financially disciplined alternatives were to wait for real RTX 5090 availability, target an RTX 4080 Super promotion, buy a carefully evaluated used or open-box card, or compare a complete prebuilt. The safest “deal” was the one that combined a credible price with a real product, usable warranty, suitable hardware and enforceable return protection.
