That is an $80 reduction, but it is not a nationwide shipped-online offer. The processor was marked “In Store Only”, and both price and inventory depended on the selected Micro Center location.
For a nearby shopper who already owns—or is ready to buy—the rest of an AM5 platform, this can be a compelling price on a high-end gaming CPU. For everyone else, the real cost includes a motherboard, DDR5 memory, cooling, tax, and potentially a long drive.

The $399.99 price is real, but it is store-specific
The observed Micro Center listing showed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at $399.99 before tax, compared with a displayed price of $479.99. Micro Center’s product page identified the item as in-store only and supported local pickup rather than ordinary nationwide shipping. Check the retailer’s product page before making any trip.

Store-sensitive results showed the 9800X3D at $399.99 for one selected location and $419.99 for another. The example product page showed more than 25 units at the Houston store when checked, but that was a time-sensitive local snapshot—not proof of national availability.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Inventory can disappear before you arrive. Micro Center also warns that a back-in-stock alert does not reserve a unit. The $80 saving is calculated against Micro Center’s displayed comparison price; it is not evidence that this is the lowest price the processor has ever reached.
What “pick it up yourself” means
This is not a conventional online deal that can simply be shipped to your home. To verify the offer:
- Open the Ryzen 7 9800X3D product page.
- Select the exact Micro Center store you would use.
- Confirm that the displayed price is $399.99 and review the live inventory status.
- Place a pickup order if that option is available.
- Wait for the retailer’s pickup confirmation before leaving.
- Bring the identification and payment method required by the store’s pickup process.
Do not rely on a search-result snippet, an old browser tab, or another store’s price. Add sales tax to the checkout total: “below $400” means $399.99 before tax, not necessarily less than $400 after tax.

AMD lists the processor as launching on November 7, 2024. It also includes a basic two-core Radeon integrated GPU, which can provide display output and help with troubleshooting, but it is not a substitute for a discrete graphics card in demanding games. AMD’s official specifications are the best source for the full platform requirements.
The listing alone does not establish that the 9800X3D is universally the fastest gaming processor, nor does it prove a particular performance gain over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Those conclusions require current independent testing. The safer takeaway is that $399.99 buys a high-end gaming-oriented eight-core CPU with a modern AM5 platform.
The $399.99 CPU is not a $399.99 upgrade
The processor price is only one part of the bill. Unless you already have compatible components, you will also need the following.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AM5 motherboard
The 9800X3D uses AMD’s AM5 socket. AMD lists support for A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870, and X870E chipsets. An AM4 motherboard cannot accept this processor.

- Ready for Advanced AI PC: Designed for the future of AI computing, with the power and connectivity needed for demanding AI applications
- AMD AM5 Socket: Ready for AMD Socket AM5 for AMD Ryzen 9000 & 8000 & 7000 Series Desktop Processors
Older AM5 boards may require a BIOS update before they will boot with the 9800X3D. Before buying, check the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list and BIOS notes. For a gaming-focused system, a sensible B650 or B850 board may be more practical than paying extra for an X870E model whose additional features you will not use.
DDR5 memory
The 9800X3D requires DDR5 memory and cannot be paired with DDR4. AMD lists official maximum memory-speed configurations up to DDR5-5600, with lower official speeds when all four memory slots are populated. Faster kits such as DDR5-6000 may be common enthusiast configurations using memory overclocking or EXPO, but they should not be described as the processor’s official base maximum.
A compatible CPU cooler
The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, although that recommendation should not be mistaken for proof that liquid cooling is an absolute requirement for every build. A capable air cooler may suit some systems depending on the case, airflow, noise target, and workload.
Check that the cooler includes AM5 mounting hardware and that it fits your case. Thermal paste may or may not be supplied with the cooler, so verify the package contents.

A discrete graphics card
The integrated Radeon graphics can help a new system display an image during setup or troubleshooting. For serious gaming, however, you will normally need a separate graphics card. If your current GPU is the performance bottleneck, replacing the processor may produce little visible improvement in your games.
Run the travel-cost calculation before chasing the discount
A nominal $80 discount can shrink quickly once you include fuel, tolls, parking, tax, and your time. If the round trip costs $25, the effective pre-tax saving is closer to $55. If it costs $80 or more, the discount has effectively disappeared.
There is also an opportunity cost. A less expensive CPU could leave more of the budget for a stronger graphics card, which may matter more for gaming performance when the GPU is limiting frame rates. Consider the complete checkout total—not just the headline processor price.
Who should buy it?
Existing AM5 owners
You are in the best position to benefit. If you already have a compatible motherboard, DDR5 memory, and adequate cooling, the purchase may be close to a straightforward CPU upgrade. Confirm BIOS support and determine whether your existing cooler and power settings suit the new chip.
Best Value
- AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Desktop Processor
Existing AM4 owners
This is not a drop-in upgrade. Moving to the 9800X3D requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory in addition to the processor and cooler. Compare the cost of the entire platform with the cost of upgrading your graphics card or keeping your current system longer.
New-build shoppers
The deal can make sense if the local store is nearby and the rest of the build is already budgeted. Micro Center’s inspected pages also showed in-store build bundles containing the 9800X3D, an AM5 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 memory. Examples included a Gigabyte B850 bundle at $879.99 and ASUS-based bundles at $1,149.99 and $1,389.97. Those are store-specific bundle snapshots, not component-by-component price comparisons, so compare the included parts carefully.
Productivity-heavy users
For rendering, compiling, or other heavily threaded workloads, a higher-core-count Ryzen 9 may be a better fit than an eight-core gaming-focused chip. Micro Center’s selected-store results showed the Ryzen 9 9950X3D at $549.99 when checked, but that price was also store-specific and should be reverified.

Alternatives shown at the same retailer
The following prices appeared in a selected-store Micro Center result and should be treated only as dated local snapshots:
| Processor | Observed selected-store price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 7800X3D | $319.99 | A cheaper gaming-oriented AM5 option |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | $279.99 | A lower-cost Zen 5 eight-core option for mixed use |
| Ryzen 7 9800X3D | $399.99 | High-end gaming-focused eight-core processor |
| Ryzen 7 9850X3D | $459.99 | A newer, more expensive eight-core X3D alternative |
| Ryzen 9 9950X3D | $549.99 | Users combining high-end gaming with serious productivity |
See the selected-store processor results for the retailer’s current display. The newer 9850X3D’s premium should be justified by independently verified performance data, not by the model number alone. Likewise, a 7800X3D may be the better value if it is substantially cheaper and your goal is gaming rather than owning the newest Zen 5-based option.
Other costs and retailer add-ons
The Micro Center product page showed a three-year limited parts-and-labor warranty and complimentary 60-day technical support. It also displayed optional replacement plans priced at $54.99 for two years and $89.99 for three years. These are retailer-specific options, not required costs of owning the processor.
Do not add an optional protection plan to your budget unless its coverage and price make sense for you. The same applies to a build service: it may be useful for an inexperienced builder, but it is not necessary for every buyer.
