What Pannalal Shakya said
At the reported July 14, 2024, inauguration of a PM College of Excellence in Guna, Shakya, the BJP MLA from Guna, said: “Nothing is going to happen with a college degree. Open a motorcycle puncture repair shop, so that you can at least earn a livelihood.” The Times of India reported the quotation on July 16; Scroll.in also reported the puncture-shop advice that day.
The Times of India also quoted Shakya comparing colleges to “compressor houses” that fill students with air according to their degrees before sending them away with certificates. These are quotations attributed to him in news reports; the reports cited here do not include an event recording or transcript for independent verification.
Where and when the remarks were reported
The Times of India places the Guna event on Sunday, July 14, 2024. It reported that Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated PM Colleges of Excellence in 55 Madhya Pradesh districts that day. That figure describes the reported inauguration event, not the colleges’ educational or employment outcomes. Reports about Shakya’s remarks followed on July 16.

Shakya’s response to criticism
Scroll.in reported that, after criticism, Shakya told The Indian Express that his comments had been taken out of context. The reporting cited here does not provide a fuller direct explanation from him, so the remark and that response should be understood as reported statements rather than a complete account of his speech or intent.
What the remark does—and does not—show about earning a living
The remarks raise a familiar distinction: a degree is a formal qualification, while earning a living is an immediate practical goal. But a politician’s statement at an inauguration cannot establish which route is financially better. The reports do not provide employment, income, tuition-cost, or business-profit data comparing graduates with motorcycle repair workers.

For a personal-finance decision, students would need to compare the costs and likely returns of specific options in their circumstances.
