They also differ in how transactions are validated and how their supplies are managed. Neither network is categorically “better,” and those design differences do not establish which asset will perform better as an investment.
What are Bitcoin and Ethereum designed to do?
Bitcoin: peer-to-peer digital money
Bitcoin began as a system for sending value directly between users without a central authority. Its network records transactions in a shared ledger, and its main purpose remains value transfer. Bitcoin.org describes it as a consensus network and peer-to-peer payment system: Bitcoin.org.
Ethereum: a programmable blockchain
Ethereum is built to run smart contracts: programs deployed to the network that can support applications such as marketplaces, financial services, and games. ETH is the network’s native asset. It pays transaction fees, is used when people publish or interact with smart contracts, and is staked by validators. Ethereum’s technical introduction explains how smart contracts run in the Ethereum Virtual Machine: Ethereum.org’s technical introduction.
How do their consensus systems differ?
| Network | Consensus | What participants do |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | Proof-of-work | Miners expend computation to help validate and add transactions to the blockchain. |
| Ethereum | Proof-of-stake | Validators stake ETH to participate in consensus and can be penalized for misconduct. |
These systems rely on different security assumptions; the distinction alone does not prove that one network is categorically safer. Ethereum switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake on September 15, 2022, according to its proof-of-stake FAQ.

How does each network handle supply?
Bitcoin has a fixed maximum
Bitcoin’s protocol sets a maximum supply of 21 million bitcoin. This cap is a monetary-design feature, not a promise about the asset’s price or purchasing power.
Ethereum has no fixed maximum in this comparison
ETH is issued to validators, while a portion of fees is burned in relation to network activity. As a result, the net supply changes over time rather than following a fixed maximum like Bitcoin’s. The issuance and burning mechanisms do not, by themselves, predict ETH’s market value.

What do transactions cost, and how quickly are they confirmed?
Fees and timing depend on network conditions and user choices; consensus type alone does not determine transaction cost. Ethereum uses gas and a dynamic fee market. Ethereum.org explains: “The cost to send a transaction (gas fee) is determined by a dynamic fee market that increases with more network demand.” Bitcoin users can choose a transaction fee, and higher fees may encourage faster confirmation when the network is busy.
| Measure | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Fee mechanism | Users choose transaction fees; higher fees may encourage faster confirmation. | Gas fees follow a dynamic market that rises with demand. |
| General timing reference | Bitcoin.org says a first confirmation generally takes about 10 to 60 minutes; actual timing varies with network conditions and fee choice. | Ethereum’s comparison guide gives around 15 minutes as a general finality estimate, not a live guarantee. |
Bitcoin’s comparison guide describes around six confirmations—about 60 minutes—as a general estimate for stronger transaction assurance, not a universal acceptance rule. A service such as an exchange may set its own deposit-confirmation policy, separate from the protocol-level descriptions. The estimates are not guarantees, and network conditions can change.

What about energy use?
Bitcoin proof-of-work involves miners expending computation, while Ethereum now uses proof-of-stake validators. Those mechanism descriptions establish a meaningful difference in how the networks reach consensus, but the available sources here do not establish a named, dated comparative energy statistic suitable for quoting. A simple energy comparison also needs a defined measurement method and timeframe; the consensus labels alone do not supply one.
Do you need a wallet to use either network?
No single custody method is required by the comparison. People can use a third-party service or choose self-custody, in which they manage their own private keys. A hardware wallet is one optional cold-storage method that keeps keys offline; it does not eliminate the need to secure recovery information or account for device risks. Bitcoin.org explains cold wallets and hardware wallets in its wallet guidance.
