Bitcoin Tops $86,000 on Oct. 5 as Traders Reassess October Fed Hike Bets

Bitcoin briefly rose above $86,000 on October 5, 2026, as traders cut and then raised market-implied October Fed hike odds. Later coverage reported a pullback near $85,500.

Bitcoin briefly moved above $86,000 early Monday, October 5, 2026, as traders reassessed the likelihood of an October Federal Reserve rate hike after weak U.S. employment data. The move did not last: CoinDesk later reported Bitcoin near $85,500, roughly flat over the previous 24 hours, after it had approached $87,000 and reversed. The price and rate expectations below are dated snapshots, not current market figures.

What happened to Bitcoin on October 5?

CoinDesk reported Bitcoin rising about 1% to just above $86,000 early Monday, October 5, amid a softer-than-expected employment report and lower market-implied expectations for an October rate increase. In a later update, the outlet put Bitcoin near $85,500 and roughly flat over the preceding 24 hours. A related CoinDesk market article described the cryptocurrency approaching $87,000 before falling back below $86,000, another rally that stalled.

Those figures describe the sequence reported that day; $86,000 was not a lasting price level. CoinDesk’s live coverage is available at its October 5 updates, with additional market context in its report on the stalled rally.

Why did traders reassess the October rate-hike outlook?

The market narrative was that weaker jobs news could reduce the need for the Fed to raise rates, so traders lowered their bets on an October hike as Bitcoin initially rose. That is an association described in CoinDesk’s coverage, not proof that the employment report alone caused Bitcoin’s price move. Crypto prices can react to multiple market forces, and the reported reversal shows why a single headline should not be treated as a reliable explanation or forecast.

CoinDesk’s live updates attributed a September payroll gain of 29,000 to QCP Capital. Its forecast comparisons were inconsistent: one update cited 84,000 expected, while another cited 90,000. The same coverage attributed 4.2% unemployment and 3% year-over-year wage growth to QCP Capital. These are reported figures and attributions, not independently verified official statistics here.

What does “price out a hike” mean?

It means market prices reflected a lower perceived likelihood of a rate increase; it does not mean the Fed had ruled one out or announced a decision. CME Group says FedWatch probabilities are implied by 30-Day Fed Funds futures prices and instructs users to attribute the estimates to “CME FedWatch.” As CME explains, “Use CME FedWatch to track the probabilities of changes to the Fed rate, as implied by 30-Day Fed Funds futures prices.” These probabilities can change as futures prices move. See CME FedWatch’s methodology and tool.

How did the reported hike odds change?

CoinDesk’s October 5 live coverage described October rate-hike odds falling to about 15% and later rising to 24%. These were changing market-implied estimates in the coverage, not an official Fed forecast. The same reporting noted 10-year Treasury yield snapshots of 5.25% in one update and 5.33% later; these, too, were intraday figures rather than fixed rates.

The Fed’s official calendar confirms a September 15–16, 2026 FOMC meeting, but that meeting record does not establish what the Fed would decide at a later meeting. See the Federal Reserve FOMC calendar. No October decision should be inferred from the market odds reported that day.

What should Bitcoin readers take from the move?

  • Keep the date attached to the price. The move above $86,000 was an early-session snapshot from October 5, 2026; later that day, CoinDesk reported Bitcoin near $85,500.
  • Separate market expectations from Fed policy. FedWatch probabilities reflect futures pricing, not a promise or decision by policymakers.
  • Do not treat the jobs headline as a standalone trading signal. The reported rally reversed, and the coverage does not establish a single cause for either direction.
