Bitcoin Nodes and BIP-110: What the 2% Support Figure Means

The early 2% BIP-110 figure counted reported node software, not network consensus. Here’s what the proposal changes, how miner signaling differed, and what followed the 2026 split.

The “2%” in the headline was an early snapshot of nodes reported to run software supporting BIP-110—not a current measure of Bitcoin consensus, miner support, or a live BTC-to-PKR exchange rate. TechJuice reported 583 of 24,481 active nodes, about 2.38%. Later reporting documented low miner signaling and a minority-chain split, which are separate developments and should not be conflated with that node count.

What the 2% BIP-110 figure measures

TechJuice reported 583 of 24,481 active Bitcoin nodes running BIP-110-supporting software, approximately 2.38%. The article does not give a precise publication date in its text, so the figure should be treated as a historical snapshot, not a current adoption statistic. TechJuice

That count also does not prove that those nodes enforce BIP-110’s proposed rules. The BIP-110 Observer project cautions that sampled peer-to-peer node counts can be biased and do not establish which consensus rules the counted nodes actually validate. A node-software count, miner signaling, and a chain split each measure different things.

What BIP-110 proposes

BIP-110 is titled “Reduced Data Temporary Softfork.” Its specification proposes a temporary consensus soft fork intended to limit certain forms of transaction data and refocus Bitcoin on money. The proposal says its deployment would last one year; these are proposed rules, not rules adopted across the Bitcoin network. BIP-110 specification

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
  • Allow OP_RETURN outputs up to 83 bytes.
  • Limit certain pushed data and witness items to 256 bytes.
  • Constrain undefined witness versions.

BIP author Dathon Ohm argues that arbitrary on-chain data creates persistent storage and service costs for node operators, while transaction fees go to the miner who includes the transaction. The specification also recognizes the limits of a consensus-level fix: “It is impossible to solve spam completely, and typically spam is best fought with policy/filters, not consensus.”

Why people disagree about data limits

The dispute is partly technical and partly about what Bitcoin should prioritize. Supporters argue that arbitrary data burdens node operators over time and distracts from Bitcoin’s role as money. Critics argue that consensus rules should not distinguish fee-paying, valid transactions based on whether their purpose is monetary, and that block space should remain neutral. News reports describe these opposing arguments; they do not establish which policy is best.

Question Supporters’ argument Critics’ argument
Should arbitrary data be treated differently from monetary transactions? Yes: limiting data can reinforce Bitcoin’s use as money. No: valid transactions that pay fees should not be judged by their purpose.
Does node-operator burden justify consensus restrictions? Supporters say persistent storage and service demands matter. Critics question whether consensus rules should be used to manage those costs.
Should the response be policy filters or consensus rules? BIP-110 proposes consensus-level limits, while acknowledging filters and policy as typical spam defenses. Critics favor block-space neutrality and resist purpose-based consensus restrictions.
What is the coordination risk? Not established as an observed benefit; the proposal requires broad coordination to avoid a split. August 2026 reporting showed a minority branch after BIP-110 nodes rejected a block, illustrating split risk.

The cited coverage does not establish a named statistical study quantifying the broader costs of arbitrary data storage. The storage-burden case should therefore be understood as the proponents’ rationale, not as a measured population-wide result.

Miner signaling fell short of the reported threshold

In the final signaling period before the August 2026 split, 51 of 2,016 blocks signaled support for BIP-110, or 2.53%, according to The Block. The same report gave 55% as the threshold for locking in without a split. This is a block-signaling figure, not a node count. The Block

What happened to the minority branch

The August 8 split

On August 8, 2026, BIP-110 nodes rejected a non-signaling block at height 961,632, creating a minority branch. At the time of The Block’s report, the main chain had advanced to height 961,640 while the minority branch had reached 961,633. The Block’s report on the split

Early block production and transaction risk

CoinDesk reported that the minority branch produced two blocks in roughly eight hours while the main chain produced 48. It attributed the minority branch’s slower production to its small share of hashpower and inherited mining difficulty. CoinDesk also warned that transactions initially accepted by both branches could create replay-style risk for people trying to sell fork coins. CoinDesk

A later proof-of-work change

The BIP-110 Observer project reports that on August 30, 2026, at block 961,640, the observed minority branch changed its proof of work to BLAKE2b, making it a different coin. The project says its own measurements stop at that change because its node cannot validate the new proof of work; its account does not establish later branch activity. BIP-110 Observer

Does this tell you the BTC-to-PKR rate?

No. The “BTC to PKR” wording does not supply an exchange rate, and no timestamped BTC/PKR quote is established here. A conversion requires a rate tied to a specific time and source; the node and miner figures above do not provide one.
