An exchange can make buying and account-based access simpler, but you depend on the company holding your bitcoin and allowing withdrawals. With self-custody, you control the keys and bear responsibility for protecting and backing them up. The right choice depends on which set of risks and responsibilities you can manage; neither choice removes bitcoin’s price risk.
What is a bitcoin wallet—and what does custody mean?
A wallet does not hold bitcoin like a physical purse. It manages the private keys or passcodes used to access and authorize transactions involving bitcoin. A public key can be used to receive assets; a private key authorizes transactions. The key question is who controls those credentials.

With exchange custody, the provider controls the keys associated with your account. With self-custody, you control the keys yourself. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance describes the trade-off this way: “With self-custody, you have sole control over the access to your crypto assets’ private keys. Self-custody also means that you have sole responsibility for the security of your crypto assets’ private keys.” Its investor bulletin, dated Dec. 12, 2025, is staff guidance, not a Commission rule or statement and has no legal force or effect. | Consideration | Exchange or other custodian | Self-custody |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The provider manages the keys and access to the assets. | You control the keys and access. |
| Main responsibility | Assess the provider’s security, financial condition, policies, and withdrawal operations. | Protect your device, keys, recovery information, and backups. |
| How access could be disrupted | A hack, shutdown, bankruptcy, or withdrawal restriction may affect access. | A lost, stolen, damaged, or exposed key or recovery phrase may affect access or funds. |
| Physical device required? | No; an exchange account does not require a hardware wallet. | No; a hardware wallet is one offline-storage option, and physical devices typically cost money. |
Bitcoin.org summarizes the self-custody trade-off: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.” Bitcoin.org explains the distinction.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What happens if the custodian fails?
If an exchange or other custodian is hacked, shuts down, becomes bankrupt, or restricts withdrawals, you may lose access to your bitcoin or face delays and uncertainty about getting it back. You are relying on the provider’s security and honesty as well as its ability and willingness to process withdrawals. Bitcoin.org warns that third-party key control creates this dependency, and the SEC bulletin notes that a custodian’s hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy may prevent access.
In the United States, FDIC deposit insurance does not protect bitcoin itself and does not cover the default, insolvency, or bankruptcy of a non-bank crypto company, including an exchange or custodian. A provider’s claim that some funds or services are insured is not a substitute for checking exactly what the policy covers. This FDIC guidance is specific to the United States; the fact sheet was last updated July 28, 2022. See the FDIC fact sheet.

What self-custody asks you to do
Self-custody removes dependence on a custodian to control your keys, but it makes your own security and recovery practices critical. A recovery phrase can restore a wallet if a device is lost or damaged. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to access the funds, while losing the private key or recovery information can mean permanent loss of access.

- Keep the recovery information private and protected from theft, damage, and loss.
- Make a backup and understand how recovery works before relying on the wallet.
- Consider how you will maintain access if a device is lost, damaged, or replaced.
A bitcoin hardware wallet is one way to keep keys offline, but owning a device alone does not guarantee security: setup, recovery, and backup practices still matter. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a balance of security and usability for offline savings and emphasizes the need for backup. Review Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance.

How to decide which is right for you
An exchange may suit you if you value account-based access
An exchange may be a practical fit if you prioritize a simpler buying and account-access experience and are comfortable depending on a provider to safeguard keys and honor withdrawals. Before leaving bitcoin with a custodian, review its terms rather than assuming you can withdraw whenever or however you want.
Self-custody may suit you if you can manage keys and backups
Self-custody may be a better fit if you want direct control of the keys and are prepared to protect them, keep recovery information safe, and maintain a workable backup plan. If you cannot reliably secure and recover the keys, direct control can turn into a risk of permanent loss.

Some people use both approaches
These options do not have to be all-or-nothing. You can keep some bitcoin with a custodian and hold some in self-custody, but splitting holdings also means managing both provider risk and key-management responsibilities. Decide based on the amount of operational responsibility you can realistically handle.
Questions to ask before choosing
If you are considering a custodian
- How does the provider safeguard assets, and who can access them?
- What happens to customer assets and withdrawals if the provider fails?
- What fees apply, including fees for withdrawals?
- If the provider mentions insurance, what exactly is covered, and under what terms?
- What withdrawal limits, delays, or other conditions apply?
