Buying a spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP), often called a bitcoin ETF, gives you shares in a trust that holds bitcoin. Buying bitcoin directly gives you bitcoin held with a platform or in a wallet you control. Both expose you to bitcoin’s price swings, but they differ in fees, custody, access and recordkeeping.
Do you own bitcoin when you buy a bitcoin ETF?
No. A shareholder owns exchange-listed shares in a trust that holds bitcoin; the trust’s custodian holds the bitcoin and private keys. Direct ownership means holding bitcoin through a hosted platform or using self-custody, where you manage the keys yourself. The SEC describes these exchange-listed products as securities traded on national securities exchanges, but its approval of listings is not an endorsement of bitcoin or of a product’s custody arrangements. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said on January 10, 2024, “Today’s action does not approve or endorse bitcoin.”
| Question | Spot bitcoin ETP shares | Bitcoin held directly |
|---|---|---|
| What do you hold? | Shares in a trust that holds bitcoin. | Bitcoin held with a platform or in a self-custody wallet. |
| Who controls the keys? | The trust’s custodian controls the private keys; shareholders do not personally hold them. | A hosted platform controls custody, or you manage the keys yourself with self-custody. |
| How do you trade? | Through a brokerage during securities-market trading hours; the share price and execution can differ from the trust’s net asset value. | Through a platform according to its trading arrangements; direct bitcoin may also be transferred subject to platform, wallet and network conditions. |
| What ongoing product charge applies? | A sponsor fee may apply. BlackRock’s iShares page reports a 0.25% sponsor fee for IBIT; check the current prospectus and any waiver. | No ETP sponsor fee, but platform trading, custody, transfer, withdrawal or network charges may apply, depending on the provider and transaction. |
What fees do you pay?
Spot bitcoin ETPs: sponsor fee plus trading costs
The sponsor fee is an ongoing product charge, not the full cost of investing. BlackRock / iShares reported a 0.25% sponsor fee for IBIT on its product page checked October 7, 2026. This is specific to IBIT, not a market-wide rate or a permanent guarantee; verify the fund’s current page and prospectus for its fee and any waiver.
As an illustration, if an investment stayed at $10,000 for a year, a 0.25% annual sponsor fee would amount to about $25, before compounding, price changes, trading costs or fee changes. That is arithmetic based on the published rate, not a forecast of the investment’s actual cost.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
You may also face a brokerage commission, a bid-ask spread and differences between the exchange price and the fund’s net asset value. A small sponsor fee does not remove execution costs or risks tied to the product’s pricing reference and custody arrangements. The trust’s prospectus describes pricing-source and custodian risks.
Direct bitcoin: check the provider and transaction
Direct-buying costs depend on the platform and how you plan to use bitcoin. Check the purchase and sale fee or spread, any custody charge, and withdrawal costs. If you move bitcoin on-chain, a network transaction fee may also apply. There is no single representative current all-in rate established here, so compare the chosen provider’s published fee schedule rather than relying on a generic estimate. The IRS’s rules for calculating digital-asset gains and losses are tax guidance, not a schedule of consumer platform prices.

How do custody and control differ?
With an ETP, the trust’s custodian holds the keys
As an ETP shareholder, you do not manage the trust’s bitcoin keys or directly transfer its bitcoin. A recent prospectus describes a custodian holding bitcoin and maintaining private keys, including offline safeguarding methods, while also warning about custodian failure or termination. Such safeguards do not make custody risk-free. The prospectus sets out the trust’s custody and pricing-source disclosures.
Direct ownership can be hosted or self-custodied
With hosted custody, a platform holds the bitcoin, so you rely on that provider’s account access and custody arrangements. With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for their backup, access and security. The SEC identifies private-key theft and hacking as risks in crypto ETP disclosures. A hardware wallet is one optional tool for self-custody, not a guarantee against loss or a substitute for careful backups and operations. The SEC’s crypto ETP disclosure guidance discusses these risks.

What access and control do you need?
An ETP may suit someone who wants bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account and does not want to handle private keys. Its trading is tied to securities-market hours and exchange execution. Direct ownership allows you to choose between a hosted service and self-custody, and may allow transfers subject to the platform, wallet and network involved. That control comes with decisions about where the bitcoin is held and, in self-custody, how the keys are secured. Neither route removes bitcoin price risk; an ETP’s share value can also be affected by its pricing reference, custody and market trading.

The IRS treats virtual currency as property for federal income tax purposes. Its digital-asset FAQs say gain or loss on a sale for U.S. dollars is generally the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized; eligible transaction costs can reduce the amount realized. The FAQs also state that digital assets held for one year or less before disposition generally have short-term gain or loss character, while those held for more than one year generally have long-term character. The IRS says its older virtual-currency FAQs generally apply to transactions completed before January 1, 2025, while its digital-asset FAQ section covers transactions on or after that date. These general rules do not settle every taxpayer’s circumstances or establish that ETP shares and directly held bitcoin have identical treatment. Which option fits your priorities?
- Consider an ETP if brokerage-based access and leaving key custody to a trust’s arrangement matter more to you than holding or transferring bitcoin directly. Compare the specific fund’s sponsor fee, prospectus, trading costs and account rules.
- Consider direct ownership if you want to hold bitcoin through a chosen platform or manage it yourself, and are prepared to evaluate provider charges or take responsibility for private-key security.
- For either route, decide how much bitcoin price volatility you can tolerate and how you will track costs and tax records. Fees alone do not capture the differences in custody, control and trading.
