It pays transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain and has roles across other BNB Chain networks. BNB began as an exchange-associated token, but Binance—the exchange—BNB Chain—the blockchain ecosystem—and BNB Smart Chain—a network within that ecosystem—are not interchangeable.
What is BNB?
BNB is a cryptocurrency used across BNB Chain. Binance Academy describes its initial coin offering in 2017 and says the token first served Binance exchange fee payments and discounts before expanding into broader blockchain uses. BNB later transitioned from Ethereum to BNB Chain after BNB Smart Chain’s mainnet launch on 18 April 2019, according to BNB Chain’s 36th burn announcement.
Today, the token’s role depends on the particular network or service. BNB Smart Chain documentation calls BNB its native utility token and identifies transaction fees as a core use. Binance Academy also describes uses that include decentralized applications, decentralized finance, staking, governance, payments, and Binance exchange fee discounts. Exchange benefits are subject to Binance service terms; they are not the same as BNB’s on-chain function.
What is BNB used for?
Paying fees on BNB Smart Chain
BNB pays transaction fees for on-chain activity on BNB Smart Chain (BSC). If you move tokens from an exchange to a BSC address, the network selected for the withdrawal matters: BNB Chain’s BSC Quick Guide advises mainnet users to withdraw through a centralized exchange that supports BSC. Check that the exchange’s selected withdrawal network matches the destination wallet and network before sending; a token name alone does not confirm that the networks match.

Using other BNB Chain networks and services
BNB Chain includes more than BNB Smart Chain. Its burn announcement describes BNB utility spanning BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and Greenfield, but the token’s precise role and wallet support can vary by network.
For BNB Greenfield specifically, the BNB Greenfield token model documentation lists BNB as a gas token, staking token, storage-service fee token, and governance token. It describes cross-chain transfers using locking on the source chain and unlocking on the destination chain, and says the networks do not mint new BNB. These details describe Greenfield’s documented model; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every BNB Chain network.

Exchange-related benefits
Binance Academy lists exchange fee discounts among BNB’s uses. This is a feature of Binance’s services, separate from paying an on-chain transaction fee. Whether a discount or other exchange benefit is available depends on current service terms and availability.
How is BNB different from Binance and BNB Smart Chain?

These distinctions matter when transferring or using tokens. Confirm the network shown by the sending service, the receiving wallet, and any application involved; support for BNB on one network does not establish identical support on another.

How does the BNB burn work?
BNB Chain describes two burn mechanisms. The quarterly Auto-Burn adjusts the amount removed according to a formula and is intended to reduce supply toward a stated target of 100 million BNB. Separately, a portion of gas fees is burned in real time; BNB Chain says BSC validators determine the burn ratio. BNB Chain describes the Auto-Burn as independently auditable and independent of the centralized exchange. That is the chain’s description of its mechanism, not an assessment of BNB’s market value or investment risk.
Burn figures are snapshots from specific announcements, not live supply data. In its release dated 15 July 2026, BNB Chain reported that the 36th burn removed 1,615,827.795 BNB and that the remaining total supply at that time was 133,166,127.91 BNB. Those dated figures do not establish a current circulating supply, market price, or future price movement.

What to check before using or holding BNB
- Identify the network. Confirm whether you are using BNB Smart Chain, Greenfield, opBNB, or another supported network; network-specific functions and wallet support differ.
- Match the transfer network. Before withdrawing from an exchange, verify that its selected network is the one supported by the receiving address and application.
- Check current service terms. Exchange discounts and other Binance-related benefits may change or vary by service availability.
- Use current network documentation. Wallet flows and supported functions can differ across networks, so consult the relevant network’s documentation rather than assuming one process covers all of BNB Chain.
Optional self-custody with a hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is an optional way to manage assets through self-custody; it is not required to use BNB and does not remove all security or recovery risks. Trezor’s supported-coins documentation lists BNB, BNB Smart Chain, and opBNB support and identifies Safe 7, Safe 5, and Safe 3 models. Ledger documents BNB Smart Chain management and BNB hardware-wallet support. Before choosing a device, confirm its current model support for the exact network you plan to use and follow the vendor’s latest security and recovery guidance.
