Big Don’s Smoked Meats announced in 2025 that it planned to leave its Bayswater premises when its lease ended. The West Australian reported that owner Donovan MacDonald described the business’s relationship with the City of Bayswater as “tenuous.” That announcement was an intention to move, not confirmation that the business later relocated; the available sources do not establish its current location.
What Big Don’s announced about leaving Bayswater
The West Australian reported that Big Don’s Smoked Meats asked for suggestions for a new location and would consider moving after its current lease ended. The report quoted owner Donovan MacDonald saying, “Our tenuous relationship with the City of Bayswater has been well documented over the years.” That is the owner’s reported explanation, not an independent finding that the City forced the business out. The reporting described a future plan. It did not give a confirmed move date or establish that a move took place. The sources available here also do not identify a verified destination or current operating location.
What the City of Bayswater said about permits
In a statement dated 6 June 2025, Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the owner had asked the City for advice about a new venture next to the existing premises. The City said its officers met the owner onsite and outlined approvals required under the Building Act 2011. City of Bayswater statement, 6 June 2025.

The City said an occupancy permit was the owner’s responsibility and that the site was not compliant without one. It characterized the unpermitted site as a public-safety risk and said it was assisting the owner in obtaining approval. In the statement, the City put its position this way: “The City is assisting the business owner in obtaining an occupancy permit, which is the responsibility of the business owner, in accordance with State legislation administered by local government.” These are the City’s descriptions of the permit issue; the statement is not an independent inspection report.
How the two accounts fit together
The newspaper report addressed the business’s stated reason for considering a move: a strained relationship with the City and a lease ending. The City’s statement addressed its own role in approvals for a proposed adjacent venture. The accounts concern related circumstances, but neither establishes that a permit issue caused the relocation plan or that the City required the business to leave.

MacDonald’s later council role does not confirm a move
The West Australian reported the day after its relocation coverage that MacDonald intended to run for Bayswater council. His campaign site describes his 2025 run, and an ABC Perth programme page dated 5 May 2026 identifies him as a councillor and business owner. That later political context does not show whether Big Don’s moved or where it operates. The West Australian’s follow-up; Bayswater Don campaign site; ABC Perth programme page, 5 May 2026.
