A banner unfurled in Venice ahead of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s 2025 wedding urged the billionaire to pay more tax. It expressed the protesters’ political argument; the reporting on the action does not establish that Bezos received a wedding-related tax break.
What did the banner say, and when was it displayed?
On June 23, 2025, activists from Greenpeace and the UK group Everyone Hates Elon unfurled a banner in Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark’s Square. The Associated Press reported its words as: “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.” Greenpeace said the banner measured 20 by 20 meters and described the action as part of a campaign for billionaire tax accountability. Greenpeace’s statement about the action; Associated Press, June 23, 2025.
Police quickly folded up and removed the banner, according to the AP. The demonstration took place before Bezos and Sánchez arrived in Venice on June 25 and before their wedding ceremony on June 27. Associated Press, June 23, 2025; Associated Press, June 25, 2025; Associated Press, June 28, 2025.
Did Bezos get a tax break for the wedding?
The banner’s wording does not prove that he did. The reporting cited here establishes that demonstrators made a demand about taxes; it does not establish a specific tax concession connected to the wedding. The slogan should therefore be understood as an advocacy claim, not a finding about the event’s tax treatment.

Greenpeace framed its campaign as a broader call for accountability, saying: “This isn’t just about one person — it’s about changing the rules so no billionaire can dodge responsibility, anywhere.” That is the organization’s stated position, not an independent finding about Bezos’s taxes. Greenpeace International, June 23, 2025.
Why did people protest the wedding?
The criticism combined local concerns about Venice with broader objections to Bezos and Amazon. They were related in the demonstrations, but they were not all the same grievance.
Venice, tourism and residents’ needs
About a dozen Venetian organizations joined under the banner “No Space for Bezos,” the AP reported. The coalition included housing advocates, anti-cruise-ship campaigners and university groups. Their concerns included overtourism and whether the needs of residents were being subordinated to visitors; reporting also described anxiety about housing costs and climate-related flooding. Associated Press, June 23, 2025; Associated Press, June 25, 2025.
“No Space for Bezos” also alluded to Sánchez’s recent space flight. The name thus linked opposition to the high-profile wedding with arguments about who gets space and attention in a city facing pressure from mass tourism. Associated Press, June 25, 2025.

Criticism of Bezos and Amazon
Other complaints came from critics of Bezos and Amazon. The AP reported objections involving Amazon labor practices, tax disputes with European governments, wealth inequality and Bezos’s political associations. These are positions raised by activists and critics; they should not be treated as findings established by the banner or by the fact that the wedding took place in Venice. Associated Press, June 25, 2025; Associated Press, June 28, 2025.

After the ceremony on San Giorgio island on Friday, June 27, hundreds of protesters marched through Venice on Saturday, June 28, according to the AP’s approximate count. The banner action and the later march were distinct events: the first happened before the couple’s arrival, while the march followed the wedding ceremony. Associated Press, June 28, 2025.
What the tax slogan establishes—and what it does not
- Established: Protesters displayed a message urging Bezos to pay more tax in St. Mark’s Square on June 23, 2025.
- Not established by the cited reporting: That Bezos received a particular tax break for the wedding, or the amount or rate of any relevant tax treatment.
- Context: The banner belonged to a wider protest that brought together local concerns about Venice and criticism of Bezos and Amazon.
