Atomo Coffee makes coffee-style drinks from plant ingredients rather than conventional coffee beans in some products, and sells other products that mix beanless ingredients with regular coffee. The Seattle startup says this approach is designed to reduce pressure on forests by reducing demand for conventional coffee production. Its environmental figures are company-reported product comparisons, however—not proof that a particular amount of forest has been saved or restored.
What is Atomo’s beanless coffee?
Atomo is a Seattle startup whose product catalog includes beanless espresso and grounds, as well as Remix products that combine beanless ingredients with conventional coffee. “Beanless” therefore describes some formulations, not every product the company sells. What is Atomo coffee made from?
Atomo says it builds custom blends from farm-grown and rescued plants, roasting and blending them to approximate coffee’s flavor and brewing ritual. Its examples include date pits from California’s Coachella Valley, carob, and sunflower seed. Its current ingredient lists also name ramon seeds, fenugreek, lemon, guava, aronia berry, green tea, millet, strawberry and potato fibers, carrot powder, green banana flour, psyllium husk, pea and oat proteins, and chicory root. These are examples across its products, not a single recipe shared by every formulation. Does it contain caffeine?
Axios reported in April 2024 that Atomo sourced caffeine from green tea and that a double shot of its then-available espresso contained 100 milligrams. That is a dated reported specification, not a guarantee for every current product or serving. Check the current label for the caffeine content of the particular product you have. Does beanless coffee taste like regular coffee?
Atomo says its process is intended to reproduce coffee’s flavor, but the available taste claim for its Remix blend comes from a test the company conducted. In a June 2024 company announcement, CEO Andy Kleitsch said, “Coffee drinkers love the taste of beanless coffee blends.” That statement reflects Atomo’s promotional account of its own blind taste test, not an independently administered comparison. Can Atomo’s coffee really reduce deforestation?
The underlying idea is that producing coffee without relying entirely on coffee beans could reduce demand for conventional coffee cultivation and the land-use pressure associated with it. Atomo presents forest protection as an aim and claims environmental benefits, but the figures it publishes are product-footprint comparisons—not measurements of forest restored or a verified tally of deforestation avoided.

The numbers are not interchangeable: they cover different products and environmental measures, and the older claims are tied to earlier launches. The evidence cited here does not establish a specific area of forest saved by buying a cup or bag of Atomo coffee.

- Whether it is fully beanless: Atomo also sells blends containing conventional coffee, including 50:50 drip grounds.
- Ingredients and caffeine: Read the current product label; recipes and caffeine content can vary.
- The environmental metric: Distinguish carbon emissions, water, farmland, and deforestation claims, and note the product and date attached to each figure.
- How taste evidence was gathered: A company-run taste test is not the same as independent comparative testing.
