If you sent money through Zelle to someone who deceived you, contact your bank or credit union immediately and ask whether it can reverse or reimburse the payment. A payment you personally approved after a scam is different from a transfer made by someone who accessed your account without permission; tell your financial institution exactly what happened. Zelle transfers move quickly, and a payment to an enrolled recipient generally cannot be canceled.

What to do if you sent money to a suspected scammer

  1. Contact your bank or credit union now. Use the phone number on your bank card, its official app, or another contact method you already trust. Report the Zelle payment and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or reimbursed. The FTC also advises contacting the bank immediately and asking for a reversal and refund. FTC: What To Do if You Were Scammed
  2. Describe the payment accurately. If you pressed send after being deceived, explain that you authorized the payment but believe it was a scam. If someone else initiated it without your permission, say that clearly and ask the institution to open an unauthorized-transfer or error investigation.
  3. Save the details. Keep the transaction date, amount, recipient name or phone number/email, payment ID if available, and messages, emails, or call details related to the request. Ask the institution what documentation it needs.
  4. Follow the institution’s reporting instructions. Zelle’s report page directs customers enrolled through a bank or credit union to report the issue to that institution. Zelle: Report a Scam

Do not assume a refund is guaranteed. Ask your institution what options apply to your specific transaction and what happens next.

Was the payment authorized or made without your permission?

This distinction matters because a scam payment you approved and an account takeover are not the same kind of transaction.

What happened How to report it What to know
You personally sent money after an impostor, seller, or other scammer deceived you. Tell your bank or credit union that you authorized the payment but were tricked, and ask whether it can reverse or reimburse it. Zelle does not offer purchase protection for authorized payments. Some qualifying impostor scams may be eligible for reimbursement under network rules; your financial institution should explain whether your case qualifies.
Another person initiated a transfer after accessing your account without permission. Tell your bank the transfer was not authorized and request an unauthorized-transfer or error investigation. Regulation E may apply to qualifying unauthorized electronic fund transfers. The outcome depends on the facts and reporting timing.

When you were tricked into pressing send

Zelle describes a payment knowingly sent after deception as a scam. That can include sending money to someone impersonating a bank employee or a loved one, or paying a seller who fails to deliver. Report the deception promptly, but do not describe a payment you approved as unauthorized. Zelle says qualifying impostor scams may be reimbursable under network rules, while its support guidance says your financial institution can confirm your options. When someone used your account without permission

Regulation E defines an unauthorized electronic fund transfer as one “initiated by a person other than the consumer without actual authority to initiate the transfer and from which the consumer receives no benefit.” The CFPB says transfers initiated by a fraudster using access information obtained through fraud can qualify. Whether the rule applies to a particular transaction depends on the circumstances, so report promptly and let the financial institution investigate. Can you cancel a Zelle payment or get the money back?

A Zelle payment to an enrolled recipient generally cannot be canceled. Zelle is designed to move money quickly, so treat a transfer like cash and verify the recipient before sending. Zelle: Can I cancel a payment?

Getting money back depends on what happened. Zelle says unauthorized fraud typically qualifies for reimbursement and that certain qualifying impostor scams may be covered under network rules. That is not a promise that every scam payment will be refunded. Ask your bank or credit union to assess the facts and explain any reimbursement options available to you.

If the payment was for goods or services that never arrived or did not meet expectations, Zelle’s support guidance says: “Zelle® does not offer purchase protection.” Do not rely on Zelle to protect a purchase from an unknown seller. Zelle security guidance

Common Zelle scam warning signs

  • Someone claims to be from your bank and tells you to move money. The FTC describes scams in which a caller posing as a bank representative instructs a person to transfer funds to a supposed new or “safe” account. End the conversation and call your bank using a number you know is genuine.
  • An urgent request comes from someone claiming to be a loved one. Scammers may invent an emergency and demand immediate payment. Contact the person directly using a number you already have, or verify the story with another trusted person.
  • An unknown seller offers a deal that seems too good to be true and insists on Zelle. Because authorized Zelle payments do not have purchase protection, choose another payment method when buying from someone you do not know.
  • The recipient details or story do not check out. Pause, confirm the recipient’s contact information independently, and do not let pressure or urgency replace verification.

Zelle’s rule is direct: “Only send money to people you personally know and trust.” Zelle security guidance The FTC’s advice for suspicious bank or loved-one requests is to end the interaction and verify through a known contact method. FTC: What To Do if You Were Scammed

How to reduce the risk before sending

  • Send money only to people you know and trust; do not treat Zelle as a buyer-protection service.
  • Confirm the recipient’s phone number or email address before sending, especially when paying someone for the first time.
  • Slow down when a request is unexpected or urgent. Independently contact the supposed sender, bank, or loved one through a trusted number.
  • If you are buying from an unfamiliar seller, use a payment option that offers protections appropriate to the transaction.

What Zelle’s reported statistic does—and does not—show

Zelle reported that 95% of Zelle payments were completed without a report of fraud or scam in 2023. This is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited measure of consumer risk, and it cannot predict whether an individual payment can be recovered. Zelle: Facts About Zelle
