The amount was reported as an upper limit, not a promise that every recipient received that sum.
Frankel also described the effort as extending beyond immediate distribution. “We rebuild homes. We will be there for years,” she told CBS. “We are the first to get there and the last to leave.” This was her description of BStrong’s intended role and duration, rather than an independently measured timeline for recovery.

Frankel’s comments on trauma, wealth and public attention
Frankel emphasized the suddenness of displacement: “People are traumatized,” she said. “They’ve gone from house proud to homeless in an instant.” Her words describe her view of what affected residents were experiencing, not a clinical assessment of every survivor.
She also said the fires had affected people across income levels: “This has affected the rich and the poor equally, which I don’t often see at the same time.” She argued that media coverage had made the disaster a public discussion about celebrity and wealth, saying, “There’s a lot of class warfare resentment, because it’s become a very public, celebrity, wealthy person’s crisis in the media.” These are Frankel’s observations about the public conversation; the CBS report does not present them as survey findings.

Why Frankel warned against sending unwanted goods
Frankel urged would-be donors not to assume that used clothing or other unsolicited items would help. “Do not bring your old clothes,” she said. “People cannot impose what they think others want. Cases of water end up in landfills, piles of clothes … it’s not helping … we know what people need.” Her point was to follow what responders say is needed, rather than send goods without checking.
That warning is not a claim that all in-kind donations are unwelcome. Needs vary by location and change as a response develops. Before donating goods, consult the current instructions of the organization serving the affected area; if a specific item is not requested or there is no clear drop-off plan, sending money through a verified channel may be more useful.

What later updates say—and what they do not establish
In a February 17, 2025, press release, GEM and BStrong said their Los Angeles wildfire response began on January 9 and continued. The release also claimed the partnership had provided more than $9 million in relief. That is an organizational figure from the partners, not an independently verified or audited impact total; the release’s accounting scope is not established here. It should not be treated as directly comparable with the CBS-reported cash-card amount.
Other contemporaneous coverage included a January 19, 2025, ABC News segment about Frankel discussing aid needs in California and North Carolina as survivors rebuilt. An iHeart episode published January 16 was also devoted to BStrong’s response, but its transcript is auto-generated and expressly not guaranteed accurate, so CBS is the source for the quotations used here.

How to donate responsibly after a disaster
The practical lesson for donors is to verify both the need and the channel before acting. A response described in January 2025 is not evidence that an organization is accepting donations or serving the same locations now.
