No. Ascend Airways UK is no longer operating: CAPA records that it ceased operations on 28 April 2026. A trade report published that day said the company planned to surrender its UK air operator’s certificate (AOC) and return six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to their lessors. Ascend was an ACMI and charter operator, not a conventional airline selling a large network of scheduled routes. It is separate from Ascend Airways Malaysia.
What was Ascend Airways?
Ascend Airways was a UK airline business providing aircraft capacity through ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) arrangements and flying charter services. In an ACMI or wet-lease arrangement, an operator supplies an aircraft and the crew and operational services needed to fly it for a customer airline. A charter flight is arranged for a client rather than sold as part of a carrier’s regular scheduled network. Ascend’s launch announcement described its purpose as connecting Great Britain to the world through ACMI and air charter services.
The business grew out of Synergy Aviation. CAPA reports that Avia Solutions Group acquired Synergy Aviation in July 2023 and rebranded it as Ascend Airways. Avia Solutions Group is therefore the ownership link in Ascend’s history; Ascend was not simply a new scheduled airline brand starting with a route network of its own.
When did Ascend Airways start and stop flying?
- July 2023: Avia Solutions Group acquired Synergy Aviation, which was later rebranded as Ascend Airways, according to CAPA.
- 31 January 2024: Ascend announced its launch plans, saying it was launching in February and had secured a Boeing 737 MAX 8 as its flagship aircraft. This was the stated plan, not the date of its first commercial flight.
- April 2024: CAPA says Ascend received an updated UK AOC, Type A operating licence and route licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
- 26 April 2024: Ascend flew its first commercial charter, for Chapman Freeborn, from London Southend Airport using Boeing 737-800 G-HODL. The company announced the inaugural flight on 13 May.
- 28 April 2026: CAPA records Ascend Airways as having ceased operations. A report published that day said the company had announced it would surrender its UK AOC and return six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to lessors.
The UK CAA’s AOC holders list dated 2 December 2025 includes Ascend Airways Limited and Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-8 (MAX) aircraft types. That is a historical regulatory snapshot, not confirmation of the certificate’s status after the reported 2026 wind-down.

How did passengers encounter Ascend?
Flights for TUI
Ascend said it planned to operate flights on behalf of TUI from May through October 2024 to provide seasonal capacity. A passenger booking with TUI could therefore travel on an Ascend-operated aircraft while dealing with TUI for the booking and customer support. In its 2024 passenger guidance, Ascend said TUI would handle airport, onboard and arrival support, and help with significant flight changes or disruption. That guidance concerns the 2024 arrangement; it does not establish a current TUI relationship.
Charter work for Chapman Freeborn
Ascend’s first commercial flight was a charter for Chapman Freeborn, which Ascend described as a fellow Avia Solutions Group company. At the time, Ascend Commercial Director Tony Carder said: “We are so pleased to have commenced commercial operations with our first ever charter, operated on behalf of Chapman Freeborn Airchartering.”

What planes did Ascend Airways fly?
The published fleet picture changed over time, so the date matters:
| Snapshot | Aircraft and configuration | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| First commercial charter, 26 April 2024 | Boeing 737-800 G-HODL | Ascend identified this aircraft as the one used for its first charter. |
| 5 March 2025 | One Boeing 737-800 and one Boeing 737 MAX 8 | Ascend said it then operated two aircraft. It described the MAX 8 as having 189 all-economy seats, with a possible alternative layout of 12 business-class and 150 economy seats. These were configuration details and seasonal plans, not proof of the cabin used on a particular flight. |
| Reported wind-down, 28 April 2026 | Six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft with CFM LEAP 1B engines | The wind-down report described the operated fleet as all MAX 8s and said six aircraft would be returned to lessors. |
In March 2025, Ascend said it planned to add three aircraft in the first quarter of that year and aimed to reach six by summer. The later report of six MAX 8s during the wind-down is a separate, later fleet account; it does not establish exactly when or how the planned expansion occurred.

Ascend CEO Alastair Willson said the MAX 8 reduced CO2 emissions by 20% and had a 40% lower noise footprint than “previous-generation aircraft.” These are the CEO’s company claims in Ascend’s 5 March 2025 announcement, not independently validated comparative findings here. The announcement did not specify a methodology that would support applying those percentages to every aircraft, route or operating condition.
Why did the UK operation end?
A trade report published on 28 April 2026 attributed the decision to a combination of cost pressures and disadvantages Ascend faced in the European ACMI market. As reported, the company cited:

- Sustained increases in jet-fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
- A higher cost base associated with holding a UK AOC.
- A lack of reciprocal wet-leasing rights for UK carriers compared with operators holding EU AOCs.
- Reliability issues with early-production engine configurations, which the report said increased maintenance requirements and reduced aircraft availability.
Those are the company’s stated explanations as relayed by the trade report, not independently established exclusive causes of the closure. The same report said Ascend stated it had met April payroll obligations and arranged a managed wind-down with stakeholders to minimize disruption. Those, too, are reported company statements rather than independent audit conclusions.

Ascend Airways UK should be treated as a former operator, not as an airline on which to book a new flight. Its role was often behind the scenes: when it supplied capacity for a customer, the customer could remain the passenger-facing airline. The available information about TUI describes only the 2024 seasonal arrangement and is not evidence of a current service.
