Buy an explicitly XQD-compatible reader. A CFexpress Type B slot does not automatically read XQD cards. For most photographers, the Sony MRW-G1 is the safest current choice because it supports Sony XQD G/M cards and CFexpress Type B, connects over 10Gbps USB, and includes both USB-C and USB-A cables. The ProGrade PG04 is the higher-bandwidth alternative for a genuine Thunderbolt 3 workstation, but its XQD driver and Apple Silicon limitations require more checking.
Quick recommendations
| Pick | Reader | Best for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | Sony MRW-G1 | Photographers who still use XQD, or use both XQD and CFexpress Type B | 10Gbps USB; interface is slower on paper than Thunderbolt 3 |
| Highest-bandwidth XQD option | ProGrade PG04 | Thunderbolt-equipped professional workstations | Requires actual Thunderbolt 3 and an XQD driver; availability can be inconsistent |
| CFexpress-only future workflow | ProGrade PG05.6 or PG05.7 | Users who have completely left XQD | These readers do not read XQD |
| Not for XQD | Delkin USB4 Type B, Lexar Type B USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and similar models | Modern CFexpress Type B workflows | Do not buy unless your cards are CFexpress Type B only |
The key buying test is the manufacturer’s format statement, not the card slot’s appearance or the words “CFexpress Type B” in a retailer listing.
Why XQD and CFexpress Type B are easy to confuse
XQD and CFexpress Type B are related PCIe-based formats, and their cards have a similar physical shape. Nikon describes CFexpress Type B as the newer high-speed successor to XQD. That relationship does not create universal reader compatibility: the reader controller, firmware and operating-system support determine which media can actually be mounted.
This distinction matters to owners of Nikon D4, D4S, D5, D500 and D850 bodies, early Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras, Sony professional cameras and camcorders, and anyone downloading an existing XQD archive. Camera compatibility, card compatibility and reader compatibility are separate questions. Check the individual camera manual and firmware notes before changing card formats; some Nikon bodies gained CFexpress support through firmware updates, while others did not. Nikon’s format explanation is at Nikon USA.

Sony MRW-G1: the practical choice for most photographers
The Sony MRW-G1 explicitly supports Sony XQD G- and M-series cards as well as CFexpress Type B. It uses a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface rated at 10Gbps, connects to the reader through USB-C, and includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables. It is bus-powered, so there is no separate power brick for a normal offload.
Sony USA listed the MRW-G1 at $99.99 on August 16, 2026; price and stock are time- and region-sensitive. Sony’s support information lists Windows 11 and macOS versions including Ventura, Monterey and Big Sur, while warning that compatibility does not guarantee identical performance on every computer. Check the current operating-system details at Sony support.
Who should buy it
- You need one reader for both XQD and CFexpress Type B.
- Your computer has USB-C or USB-A but no Thunderbolt 3.
- You want a portable, currently sold product with ordinary USB connectivity.
- You are downloading legacy XQD cards after upgrading cameras.
What the 10Gbps rating does—and does not—mean
Ten gigabits per second is the interface ceiling, not a guaranteed card-copy rate. The XQD card, reader controller, cable, host chipset, destination drive, file system, simultaneous transfers and heat can all reduce throughput. For many XQD cards, the media itself is the limiting factor long before USB 3.1 Gen 2 is saturated.

ProGrade PG04: faster interface, more conditions
The ProGrade PG04 supports CFexpress Type B and XQD and uses Thunderbolt 3, with a headline rating of up to 40Gbps (5GB/s). That bandwidth is most meaningful with fast CFexpress Type B cards and a suitably fast workstation; it should not be presented as a 5GB/s XQD result.

The PG04 requires a genuine Thunderbolt 3-capable port and an appropriate Thunderbolt cable. Driver and availability cautions
ProGrade’s product information says the Sony XQD driver is required to read XQD cards and warns that the driver does not currently support Macs with Apple M1 chips. The manufacturer-refurbished PG04 listing showed a $97.49 price against a $129.99 MSRP but was marked unavailable on August 16, 2026. Treat marketplace or used listings as a different purchase: verify the return policy, cable, driver situation and warranty before relying on the reader for paid assignments.
Choose the PG04 when
- Your workstation has verified Thunderbolt 3.
- You regularly ingest large CFexpress Type B cards and still need XQD.
- Maximum interface bandwidth matters more than the simplest setup.
- You can satisfy the driver requirements and accept uncertain stock.
Modern CFexpress readers that are not XQD readers
Many current readers are excellent CFexpress Type B products but are wrong for an XQD workflow. Confirmed examples include:
Recommended Free Tools
- ProGrade PG05.5: CFexpress Type B and SDXC; not XQD.
- ProGrade PG05.6 USB4: a modern Type B reader; not XQD, as stated in ProGrade’s workflow-reader information at ProGrade’s workflow collection.
- ProGrade PG05.7: CFexpress Type B and SDXC; the official page says it does not support XQD.
- Delkin USB4 CFexpress Type B reader: explicitly excludes XQD.
- Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 reader: marketed for CFexpress Type B; its product page does not establish XQD support.
USB4, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and a Type B-shaped slot are not substitutes for an explicit XQD statement. If a manufacturer’s page does not mention XQD, assume the reader is unsuitable until the manufacturer confirms otherwise.

How to choose between USB and Thunderbolt
| Question | USB reader such as MRW-G1 | Thunderbolt reader such as PG04 |
|---|---|---|
| Required computer connection | USB-C or USB-A, at the supported USB speed | Actual Thunderbolt 3 or later; USB-only ports are insufficient |
| Advertised interface ceiling | 10Gbps | Up to 40Gbps / 5GB/s |
| Setup complexity | Lower; ordinary USB cables included | Higher; port, cable and driver must all match |
| Best use | Mixed XQD/CFexpress work and portability | High-volume CFexpress transfers on a Thunderbolt workstation |
In either case, use a short, capable data cable, connect directly to the computer when troubleshooting, and write to an SSD or other destination that can sustain the transfer. The interface number alone does not determine a professional workflow’s actual speed.
Safe XQD offload and troubleshooting
Before copying
- Confirm that the reader explicitly supports XQD.
- Check the computer’s USB or Thunderbolt specification and use the supplied or certified data cable.
- Make sure the destination drive has enough free space for the complete card.
- Power down the camera before removing the card when the camera maker requires it.
If the card is not detected
- Remove and reinsert the card.
- Replace a charging-only or suspect USB-C cable with the supplied data cable.
- Connect directly to the computer instead of an unpowered hub.
- Try another USB or Thunderbolt port.
- Verify that the reader is an XQD model, not Type B-only.
- Install or update the required driver, especially for the PG04.
- Check Disk Utility on macOS or Disk Management on Windows.
- Test the card in another confirmed XQD reader.
A card that works in the camera but not in one reader may indicate a cable, port, driver or reader problem. Failure in multiple known-good readers points more strongly to media or file-system damage. Do not format an important card. If files are irreplaceable, create a forensic or sector-level image before attempting repairs.
After copying
- Use the operating system’s eject or unmount command before removing the card.
- Verify that the copied files open and that the file count or checksum matches your workflow.
- Create a second backup before formatting or reusing the card.
- Remember that a reader provides no data protection by itself; it is only the ingestion device.
Buying checklist
- Format: Does the official specification explicitly say XQD?
- Camera: Is your exact model and firmware approved for the card you intend to use?
- Port: Is the computer USB-only, or does it genuinely support Thunderbolt?
- Driver: Does your operating system and Apple Silicon generation support the required software?
- Cable: Is a suitable data or certified Thunderbolt cable included?
- Workflow: Do you need SD in the same reader, or only XQD and Type B?
- Availability: Can you buy from a seller with a clear return policy and current warranty?
Bottom line
For most professionals still carrying XQD cards, buy the Sony MRW-G1 and verify the current Sony USA price and stock before checkout. Choose the ProGrade PG04 only when you have confirmed Thunderbolt 3, can meet its XQD-driver requirements and value higher theoretical interface bandwidth. If you have migrated entirely to CFexpress Type B, a modern USB4 or USB 3.2 reader can be appropriate—but it should not be described or purchased as an XQD reader.
