For the 2025 editions, The Independent’s taste-tested UK shortlist named Virgin Wines its overall pick, while US coverage highlighted Costco and Total Wine options. The prices and formats below are historical 2025 reporting, not current offers; 2026 stock and prices have not been established.
What “bestselling” means for this list
“Bestselling” is a common search phrase, but the available evidence does not establish which calendar sold the most across retailers. The Independent tested several UK calendars and selected category winners; that is an editorial comparison, not a sales ranking. USA TODAY described Total Wine’s calendar as “top-selling” in its headline and deck, and reported that it sold out quickly, but published no sales figures or comparative methodology. Treat both descriptions as coverage of individual products, not proof of a market-wide bestseller.
The UK selections below come from The Independent’s 2025 taste-tested roundup, which assessed quality, variety, presentation, value and festive appeal. Its verdicts are one reviewer’s judgments, not laboratory results. US products are included separately because their retailers, formats and coverage are not directly comparable with the UK shortlist.
2025 calendars at a glance
| Calendar | Best suited to | Reported 2025 format | Reported 2025 price |
| Virgin Wines mixed calendar | Best overall UK editorial pick | 24 × 187 ml miniatures plus one 75 cl Shiraz; the review describes a 25-day format | £99.99 |
| Spicers of Hythe Wine Down to Christmas | Budget and variety | 24 drinks, including mini bottles and two cans | £63.96 |
| John Lewis wine and fizz | Sparkling-wine fans | 24 items, including 12 sparkling bottles | £120 |
| The Little Fine Wine Company festive case | Fine-wine format | 12 × 37.5 cl half-bottles over 12 days | £140 |
| Laithwaites mixed calendar | A fuller bottle for Christmas | 23 × 18.7 cl miniatures plus one 75 cl Prosecco and a stopper gift | £90 |
| Costco Wine Advent-ure (US) | US warehouse option | 24 × 375 ml bottles | $99.99 |
| Total Wine Wine Adventure (US) | US retailer option | 24 mini bottles | $79.99 |
All UK prices and formats in the table are figures reported by The Independent for 2025, not current quotes. Costco’s figures are from Costco Wine Blog’s 2025 report, and Total Wine’s from USA TODAY’s October 2025 coverage. A door count alone is not a useful value comparison: bottles range from small miniatures to half-bottles and full-size bottles, and some calendars include cans.

UK editorial picks: strengths and trade-offs
Virgin Wines: best overall pick
The Independent’s 2025 reviewer, Jonathan Hatchman, named Virgin Wines the best wine advent calendar of the year. The calendar contained 24 miniatures of 187 ml and a 75 cl Steve Grimley “legacy” Shiraz for Christmas Day. The miniatures included reds, whites, rosés and Prosecco; examples cited were Chilean Double Check Merlot, Portuguese Mar Mistura Alvarinho and French Seraph Reserve Pinot Noir. The reviewer praised the range and presentation, while noting that some bottles may feel familiar to experienced wine drinkers. Read The Independent’s 2025 wine advent calendar review.
Spicers of Hythe: a lower-priced UK pick
The 2025 Wine Down to Christmas calendar had 24 drinks, including mini bottles and two cans, and was reported at £63.96 by The Independent. The assortment covered zesty whites, fuller-bodied reds, sweeter whites and rosé. The reviewer found the presentation less premium than some alternatives and noted that contents could vary with stock, so the exact selection was not guaranteed.
John Lewis: for a mix of still and sparkling wines
The 2025 calendar contained 24 items, 12 of them sparkling. The Independent’s reviewer mentioned Prosecco, rosé and Moscato among the fizz, alongside still wines including Shiraz, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and White Zinfandel. Six of the 12 sparkling choices were duplicates, a consideration if discovering a different bottle each day matters to you.

- EXCLUSIVE SEASONAL FLAVORS: Each door reveals something new — festive fruit combinations and seasonal pairings that can't be found on the regular shelf any time of year.
- Every jar is made in France with real fruit, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial additives. Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten-free, and kosher.
- The mini glass jars with their red-check lids are reusable long after December — for spices, small gifts, or holiday place settings that guests will want to keep.
- One of the few food gifts that sells out annually. Thoughtful, collectible, and genuinely delicious — for the host, the foodie, the person who has everything.
The Little Fine Wine Company: a 12-day fine-wine case
This is a different proposition from a 24-day calendar: the 2025 festive case contained twelve 37.5 cl half-bottles, intended for twelve days, and was reported at £140. The bottle identities were meant to remain a surprise. The Independent said buyers could expect Champagne and other sparkling wines, classic reds and whites, and sweet and fortified wines; it highlighted CVNE Imperial Rioja Reserva 2019 as one included bottle.
Laithwaites: a full-size Christmas bottle and stopper
The Independent reported that the 2025 Laithwaites calendar included 23 miniatures of 18.7 cl, a full-size 75 cl Prosecco and a branded stopper gift, at £90. Examples discussed included Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Chianti and Grüner Veltliner. The reviewer felt some miniatures were fillers, which may matter if you are choosing primarily for the quality of each discovery.

Costco Wine Advent-ure
Costco Wine Blog reported on September 14, 2025 that the calendar contained 24 half-size 375 ml bottles and cost $99.99. The report described wines from France and Italy alongside bottles from several other countries, including reds, whites, rosé, a sparkling wine, sake and a “chocolate red.” Its value and tasting observations are the blog author’s assessments, not a controlled comparison with the UK calendars. Total Wine Wine Adventure
USA TODAY reported on October 17, 2025 that Total Wine’s seasonal calendar cost $79.99 and held 24 mini bottles. The article said it was a limited-time product and gave an October 24, 2025 order-by date for delivery by December 1, 2025; that deadline has passed. The product listing on Total Wine’s official contents page describes a 24-day calendar and lists wines, but does not clearly identify the edition year, so it does not establish the contents or availability of a 2026 edition. Read USA TODAY’s 2025 coverage and check Total Wine’s calendar page.

- Choose by bottle size, not just number of doors. A calendar of 187 ml miniatures, one of 375 ml half-bottles and one containing a full-size celebration bottle deliver different amounts of wine.
- Decide whether you want variety or a particular style. Virgin Wines’ reported range included several wine types; John Lewis dedicated half its 24 items to sparkling bottles, with some repeats.
- Check how many days it covers. Most calendars here were presented as 24-day formats, while The Little Fine Wine Company’s case was for 12 days. Virgin Wines also included a full-size Christmas Day bottle.
- Consider who is drinking it. A broad mix may suit casual exploration; The Independent cautioned that some Virgin Wines picks could seem familiar to enthusiasts, while the fine-wine case offered a different positioning and larger bottles.
- Compare extras and uncertainty. Laithwaites included a stopper and full-size Prosecco; Spicers’ contents could vary with stock. Confirm the exact edition and contents before buying.
- Check current delivery and eligibility directly with the retailer. The cited prices, seasonal listings and delivery dates refer to 2025 and do not establish current availability or the rules that apply to your location.
What is not established for 2026
The cited reporting concerns 2025 products. It does not establish 2026 prices, stock, shipping areas or the contents of the coming season’s calendars. Gérard Bertrand’s official search result described a 2025 calendar of 24 wines in 100 ml tasting sizes, arranged in four collections with individual wine and food-pairing pages, at a listed €249. However, the page could not be fetched, so those search-result details are not sufficient to confirm a current offer or edition.
