A U.S. stock index fund, a balanced fund, an international fund, and a target-date fund serve different jobs and carry different risks. Choose by the role you need in your portfolio, then compare the fund’s exposure, risk, expense ratio, minimum investment, time horizon, and account fit—not recent returns alone.
Start with the job the fund needs to do
Vanguard’s fund listing organizes funds by dimensions such as asset class, risk, management style, minimum investment, and expense ratio. Use those details to identify what a fund owns and how it might fit with the rest of your investments. A fund’s category is not a complete portfolio plan: a large-company U.S. stock fund, for example, does not provide the same exposure as a bond or international fund.
- Exposure: Which markets and asset classes does the fund hold?
- Portfolio role: Is it intended to provide stock exposure, bond exposure, a mix, or a time-based allocation?
- Risk: How much loss could you tolerate, including during a market decline?
- Cost and access: What are the expense ratio, share class, and initial minimum?
- Fit: Does the fund’s investment approach suit your time horizon and account circumstances?
Vanguard’s mutual fund list is a dynamic product listing, not a substitute for a current fund profile or prospectus. Verify the fund’s mandate, holdings, fees, minimum, and risks before investing.

#1 Best Overall
| Fund and share class | Exposure and possible role | Risk and limits | Snapshot expense ratio | Snapshot minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX) | U.S. large-company stocks; an example of large-cap blend exposure. | Listing risk category: 4. A stock fund can lose value and is not, by itself, a diversified allocation across all asset classes. | 0.04% | $3,000 |
| Balanced Index Fund Admiral Shares (VBIAX) | Balanced category; a different portfolio role from a fund in a single stock-market category. | Review the current profile for its allocation, holdings, and risks; the category label alone does not establish whether its mix fits your needs. | 0.07% | $3,000 |
| Developed Markets Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTMGX) | Developed international markets; exposure distinct from U.S. stocks. | Developed-market exposure does not represent every global market. Review the current mandate and risks. | 0.05% | $3,000 |

Understand expense ratios, other costs, and minimums
Vanguard reports an asset-weighted average mutual fund expense ratio of 0.08%, compared with an industry average of 0.50%, based on Vanguard and Morningstar, Inc. data as of December 31, 2025; the industry figure excludes Vanguard. These are fund-family averages, not the fee of every fund, and they do not predict future costs or investment results. Compare a specific fund’s current expense ratio rather than assuming it matches the family average.
Vanguard states that its funds do not charge front-end or back-end loads, but some funds may charge purchase or redemption fees. Its fee page lists such transaction fees as ranging from 0.25% to 1.00% when applicable. The same page describes a $25 brokerage account service fee, with waivers and exemptions. Fund operating expenses, transaction fees, and brokerage account fees are different charges; confirm which apply to your fund and account.
General minimums on Vanguard’s fee page vary by share class and fund type. They are not universal guarantees of the amount required for every fund.

Consider target-date funds on their own terms
Target Retirement Funds adjust their investment emphasis over time, moving from more aggressive investments toward more conservative investments as the target date approaches. That glide path may make one fund a convenient way to hold a changing mix, but the date in a fund’s name does not guarantee an investment outcome or ensure that the allocation matches your circumstances.
Rank #4
Vanguard says a Target Retirement Fund is not guaranteed at any time, including on or after its target date. Review its current allocation and glide path alongside your expected retirement timing and willingness to accept losses. The fund’s prospectus explains its objectives, risks, charges, and expenses.

Vanguard cautions that all investing is subject to risk, including possible loss of the money invested. Before buying, read and consider the fund’s prospectus and verify details on the official fund page. For a decision tied to your broader financial situation, consider whether you need individualized advice; a fund category or historical return cannot determine that fit for you.
