There is no carry-on suitcase that fits every airline or every trip. For a premium soft-sided case, OutdoorGearLab names the Travelpro Platinum Elite its overall pick; for hard-sided luggage, it favors the Away The Carry-On. Its lower-cost hard-shell choice is the Samsonite Freeform Spinner. Those are the publisher’s judgments from its reviewed comparison, not a universal ranking or a guarantee that any case will meet your airline’s limits. Choose by your route, fare, packing needs and the bag’s measured exterior dimensions.
Which carry-on suits your trip?
OutdoorGearLab’s currently accessible comparison presents its tested picks in distinct roles. The page now appears as a 2026 guide, so it should not be treated as a definitive ranking of the 2025 market. Its assessments and measurements belong to that publisher’s review.
| Case | Why consider it | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On | OutdoorGearLab’s overall pick. The reviewer describes a soft-sided design with organization features including a garment folder and a power-bank pocket. | The reviewer notes added weight and higher price. Check the exact model’s current exterior dimensions before buying. |
| Away The Carry-On | OutdoorGearLab’s favorite hard-sided case. The review describes smooth rolling, compression and a 36-liter capacity; Away’s product page also lists spinner wheels and compression. | The publisher says its capacity is lower than some competitors. A typical carry-on size does not guarantee acceptance by every airline. |
| Samsonite Freeform Spinner | OutdoorGearLab’s cost-effective hard-shell recommendation. In that comparison, the publisher reports its own measurements of 6.6 pounds and 41.2 liters. | Those figures are the reviewer’s measurements, not a promise for every version or a guarantee of airline fit. Check the current dimensions and fare rules. |
| Monos Carry-On | Monos describes a polycarbonate shell, spinner wheels, a combination lock, a removable compression pad and a limited lifetime warranty. | These are manufacturer descriptions. Review the actual warranty terms and confirm the exact item’s dimensions against your route. |
| Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Spinner | OutdoorGearLab presents it as a premium soft-sided upgrade with expansion, compression and organization features. | The publisher characterizes it as pricey. Consider whether those features justify the cost for your travel pattern. |
If you want a cheap lightweight case, be careful about treating a low price or a light empty weight as the whole decision. T3’s roundup dated July 24, 2026 names the Aerolite 55cm Hard Shell as its affordable option, but that is a 2026 recommendation and does not establish a 2025 ranking or fit on every carrier.
How to choose: fit, weight and usable space
Start with the outside dimensions
Compare the airline’s published maximum with the suitcase’s exterior measurements, including wheels and handles where the carrier specifies them. Do this for every operating carrier and fare on your itinerary. A label such as “airline approved” is not meaningful without naming the airline and the applicable dimensions.

#1 Best Overall
- The Perfect Size: The textured, scratch-resistant exterior of this hardshell carry-on luggage is 15 x 10 x 23 inches" with wheels and meets the cabin size restrictions of most airlines.
- Stay Organized: This small hard-sided carry-on suitcase provides ample packing room with a spacious 20.5" x 14.5" x 10.0" interior. The elastic straps, divider, and pouch ensure everything stays neatly in place
Balance empty weight against capacity
On routes with strict weight limits, the empty case uses part of your allowance before you pack. On trips with no carry-on weight limit, a lighter bag can still be easier to lift into an overhead bin. Compare published internal volume as well as weight: exterior size alone does not tell you how much you can pack, and compression or organization features may trade some open packing space for easier access and separation.
Choose the construction and features you will use
- Hard-sided: Consider a shell case if that construction suits your packing style. The Away and Samsonite examples above are hard-shell options in OutdoorGearLab’s comparison.
- Soft-sided: A soft case may appeal if you value exterior organization or expansion features. The Travelpro and Briggs & Riley examples are presented as soft-sided options by the reviewer.
- Wheels and handle: Look for useful information about how the case tracks and how its handle feels, not just the number of wheels. The cited materials do not establish a comparable measurement for every option, so try the exact model if practical.
- Compression and expansion: Compression can help control packed items; expansion can add room but may change the packed bag’s exterior dimensions. Check whether the expanded case remains within your airline’s limit.
- Warranty and repair: A warranty label does not mean unconditional coverage. Read the terms for exclusions, duration and the process for service or repair before relying on it.
Check airline and fare rules before you fly
Cabin-bag acceptance is specific to the carrier, route and fare. Policies can also allow staff to restrict bags when space is limited, and a bag that meets a size rule may still be moved to the hold if overhead storage is unavailable.

| Carrier or situation | What the published policy says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Delta Air Lines | Delta’s carry-on policy, accessed in 2026, lists a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches and allows one carry-on and one personal item. Gate or flight staff may further limit cabin bags based on storage and passenger count. | Measure the case and check the current policy before travel; cabin storage is not guaranteed. |
| Air Canada | Air Canada’s policy says wheels and handles count, limits are strictly enforced, and a noncompliant bag may need to be checked, potentially with charges. It states there is no carry-on weight limit, but you must be able to place the bag in the overhead bin without help. Certain Economy Basic tickets purchased on or after January 3, 2025, for specified itineraries include only one personal item, not a standard carry-on. | Check both the itinerary category and fare conditions. Do not assume a suitcase is included because it meets the size limit. |
| Multi-carrier itinerary | Lufthansa advises checking the operating carrier’s rules for each flight and following the most restrictive requirements. If cabin storage is insufficient, luggage may be moved to the hold. | Plan around the tightest applicable limit. Before a bag is gate-checked, remove valuables, necessary medicines and battery-powered devices. |
A practical way to make the choice
- List your flights and fare types. Identify the operating carrier for each segment, including any connection, and check its current carry-on rules.
- Set your maximum exterior size. Use the strictest applicable limit and account for wheels and handles where required. Check whether expansion changes the case dimensions.
- Decide what matters most for the trip. For a short trip, organization and compression may be more useful than maximum volume. For a route with a weight restriction, give empty weight priority.
- Compare the total value. Weigh usable capacity, materials, mobility, features, repair options, warranty terms and current price. Do not assume that a premium price or a limited lifetime warranty settles the choice.
- Recheck before departure. Confirm the carrier’s policy and your fare conditions close to travel, since rules and operational decisions can affect what goes in the cabin.
