There is not enough verified evidence to rank seven current teeth-whitening kits or call them tested. For at-home bleaching, peroxide strips are the format with clinical-trial support summarized by the American Dental Association (ADA); whitening toothpaste mainly works on surface stains. The right choice depends on your dental health, the product’s exact ingredients and directions, and whether its ADA Seal listing matches the package.
What at-home whitening products do—and do not do
Over-the-counter whitening products commonly use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide at lower concentrations than in-office or dentist-prescribed treatments. Available formats include toothpastes, strips, painted-on gels and gels used in trays. Their effects and use differ, so “whitening kit” is not a single treatment category. The ADA outlines these formats and mechanisms in its whitening guidance.
Peroxide strips and gels bleach teeth
Most whitening strips rely primarily on peroxide. The ADA’s summary of a review of over-the-counter bleaching products reports that clinical trials supported strip efficacy. Peroxide gels, whether painted on or delivered in a tray, also bleach teeth, but the product’s instructions and concentration determine how it is used.
Whitening toothpaste mainly addresses surface stains
Whitening toothpastes primarily use abrasives to remove extrinsic stains on the tooth surface, though some contain low levels of peroxide. The ADA reports that a 2020 systematic review found limited evidence that whitening toothpastes had efficacy similar to paint-on gel, but less than strips; adverse effects were comparable. Toothpaste may help with surface staining, but it should not be treated as equivalent to peroxide-strip bleaching.

How to choose a kit without relying on a “best” label
A product recommendation is only useful when it identifies the exact product and version and explains why it fits the reader. Before buying, check these details on the package and manufacturer’s directions:
- Active ingredient and concentration: Identify whether the product uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, and note the stated concentration. Do not assume two products are comparable from their format or marketing claims alone.
- Directions and treatment duration: Follow the product’s stated schedule and wear time rather than extending treatment in pursuit of faster results.
- Use cadence and warnings: Check how often the product is intended to be used and what it says about sensitivity or gum irritation.
- ADA Seal status: Search the ADA’s Seal for Consumers information and confirm that the listing and package refer to the same product.
- Availability and package version: Confirm that the specific version is currently sold and that its label matches the claims being considered.
The ADA Seal is product-specific evidence concerning safety and effectiveness for the product’s intended claims when used as directed. It is not a declaration that the product is better than every alternative, and a generic “dentist approved” phrase is not a substitute for checking the listing and package.

Safety: sensitivity, irritation and dental work
Tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums or other oral tissues are common possible effects of home whitening. The ADA summarizes a 2018 Cochrane review as finding these effects generally mild and temporary, with sensitivity and irritation more prevalent at higher concentrations; gum irritation typically resolves shortly after treatment ends. Stop using a product and seek dental advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.
Talk to a dentist if you have sensitivity or dental concerns
If you already have tooth sensitivity or other dental issues, ask a dentist about the risks and benefits before whitening. A dentist can help determine whether whitening is appropriate, recommend an approach and set expectations. The ADA’s policy on non-dentist-administered whitening, adopted in 2008, states that it “supports educating the public on the need to consult with a licensed dentist to determine if whitening/bleaching is an appropriate course of treatment.” The ADA also discusses planning and sensitivity in its guidance on when to whiten teeth.

Restorations may not whiten like natural teeth
Whitening agents can react differently with ceramic crowns, sealants and other dental restorations, so their color may not change to match newly whitened natural teeth. If you have dental work, discuss the likely result with your dentist before starting. For professional options, dentists may supervise at-home treatment with custom-made trays designed to fit comfortably and minimize gel contact with the gums; in-office treatment is another alternative.
