There is no single carry-on size that guarantees acceptance on every airline. Before choosing a spinner, check the exact model’s full exterior dimensions—including wheels and handles—against the current limit for the airline operating each flight. Once it passes that first check, compare weight, capacity, material, expansion, organization, warranty and price with the trips you actually take.
How to choose a spinner carry-on that fits
- Check the operating airline’s current size limit. For connections or codeshares, verify the rules of each airline that operates a segment; the ticketing carrier is not necessarily the operator.
- Find the exact bag’s exterior dimensions. Look for measurements that include wheels and handles, not just the advertised “19-inch” or “21-inch” label. Check both expanded and unexpanded dimensions.
- Compare like with like. Compare empty weight, usable capacity, shell material, compartments, wheel arrangement, handle and grab points, warranty terms and current price.
- Decide whether the added capacity is worth the fit risk. An expanded bag may exceed an airline’s depth limit, even if it fits when unexpanded. Measure it in the configuration you intend to travel with.
Delta Air Lines currently publishes a maximum carry-on size of 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm), including handles and wheels. Delta says gate staff may check a bag if it does not fit or overhead space is exceptionally full. Airline policies can change, so verify the operating carrier’s current rules before each trip: Delta carry-on baggage policy.
Two spinner carry-ons, compared
These manufacturer-listed examples illustrate different trade-offs; the specifications below are not independent test results. Neither is a universal recommendation: confirm the complete dimensions against your airline.
| Model | Published specifications | Fit consideration | Useful angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsonite Freeform Carry-On Spinner | 6.5 lb; 23 x 15 x 10 in exterior; polypropylene hardside; double wheels; expansion; limited 10-year global warranty. | Its listed exterior measurements exceed Delta’s cited 22 x 14 x 9 in maximum. That does not establish fit on other airlines; check the actual carrier’s limit. | A hardside example with a manufacturer-listed weight and straightforward published specifications. Details: Samsonite Freeform product page. |
| Briggs & Riley Baseline 19-inch Carry-On Spinner | 9 lb; 31–41 L capacity; 19 x 14 x 9–11.5 in exterior; ballistic nylon; 360-degree spinner wheels; lifetime guarantee described by the manufacturer. | Expanded depth reaches 11.5 in. Check both packed and expanded dimensions against the operating airline. | A softside, expandable example for travelers weighing capacity and fabric construction against the deeper expanded profile. What matters after the size check
Empty weight and capacity
A lighter empty suitcase leaves more of a weight allowance for what you pack, where an airline applies one. Capacity figures are useful for comparing models, but they do not tell you how efficiently a particular set of belongings will fit. Consider both the bag’s empty weight and how much room its interior layout leaves for your usual packing.
Hardside or softside
The Freeform is listed as polypropylene hardside; the Baseline uses ballistic nylon. A hard shell may appeal if you prefer a wipe-clean exterior, while fabric construction can offer a more flexible packing experience and may include exterior pockets. These are buying considerations, not evidence that one material is more durable: the cited specifications do not establish comparative performance in testing.

- CARRY-ON DESIGN: Best for 1-5 day trips without the hassle of checking luggage; measures 14.8 x 10 x 21.7 inches, including wheels
- DURABLE AND RELIABLE: Extra-thick hard shell with scratch-resistant finish guards against impact and rough handling

- ORGANIZED INTERIOR: Keep essentials organized with an interior divider and three zippered pockets
- EFFORTLESS TRAVEL: Navigate with ease thanks to four multi-directional wheels, telescoping handle, and short lift handle
Expansion and organization
Expansion can provide extra room, but it also increases exterior depth. Check the expanded measurement before relying on that extra space for a flight. Compare the internal compartments and any external pockets with the items you need to reach or keep separate; feature counts alone do not show whether a layout will suit your packing habits.
Wheels, handle and grab points
Both examples are spinner designs, but wheel details differ: Samsonite lists double wheels, while Briggs & Riley describes 360-degree spinner wheels. Check the specific model’s handle and grab-point configuration, too. The published information here does not establish which rolls more smoothly or lasts longer, so avoid treating those features as proof of performance.

Warranty and value
Samsonite lists a limited 10-year global warranty, while Briggs & Riley describes a lifetime guarantee. A headline duration is not a substitute for the terms: review what is covered, exclusions, repair process and any conditions that apply in your region. Prices are volatile and are not stated here; compare current prices and terms for the exact model before deciding whether its features and expected frequency of use justify the cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the final choice
- Choose fit first: If the full exterior measurement exceeds your airline’s published limit, do not assume an “airline-approved” or inch-based product label will override it.
- Favor lower empty weight if you often travel with a strict weight allowance or carry heavier items.
- Consider softside and expansion if flexibility or extra capacity matters, while accounting for the expanded depth and checking pocket layout.
- Look closely at warranty terms if you expect frequent use; compare actual coverage rather than years alone.
- Check for gate-check contingencies: Even a bag that meets a published size limit may be checked if it does not fit or overhead space is unusually limited.
Independent buying guides can help identify models to compare, but distinguish editorial rankings from testing. Pack & Porter says its comparison was last updated September 3, 2026, its prices were last verified October 5, 2026, and “We have not tested this gear”: Pack & Porter carry-on comparison. A ranking is not a substitute for checking dimensions, current airline rules and the product’s terms.

Does TSA approval determine which spinner to buy?
No. TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids guidance concerns liquids packed in carry-on baggage, not suitcase dimensions or product quality. Use the agency’s guidance for liquids rules: TSA liquids rule. A “TSA lock” label should not be treated as TSA endorsement of the suitcase.
