For most U.S. buyers, the smartest approach is to plan the build with PCPartPicker, check Micro Center for CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundles if a store is nearby, then compare direct-retail listings from Newegg, Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H Photo Video.
The lowest listed price is not always the lowest-cost purchase. Shipping, sales tax, seller identity, return terms, warranty support, delivery time, and bundle conditions can matter more than a $10 difference at checkout.
Best online retailer by buying situation
| Buying situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CPU, motherboard, and RAM platform bundle | Micro Center | Eligible in-store promotions and immediate pickup can outweigh a slightly lower individual price elsewhere. |
| Broad PC-component selection and combo deals | Newegg | PC-focused catalog, compatibility tools, combo promotions, and new, open-box, and marketplace inventory. |
| Fast delivery and convenient checkout | Amazon | Broad availability and strong logistics, provided you verify the seller and condition. |
| Local returns and physical-store support | Best Buy | Store pickup and the ability to return qualifying purchases locally. |
| Enthusiast and creator hardware | B&H Photo Video | Reputable specialist retailer with a useful component, storage, display, and workstation catalog. |
| Planning and price comparison | PCPartPicker | Helps build a compatible parts list and compare retailers, but does not sell the components. |
For used hardware, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Reddit HardwareSwap, and similar channels can be cheaper, but they carry substantially greater risk. They are best reserved for buyers who can verify condition, serial numbers, testing results, and return arrangements.
How to choose a retailer: price is only one input
Compare the complete purchase rather than the headline item price. A useful calculation is:
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Effective cost = item prices + shipping + sales tax − valid bundle discounts − usable rebates or credits
Also account for costs that are harder to express in dollars:
- Whether the item arrives before you need to complete the build
- Whether a return requires shipping the product back
- Whether opened or installed products are accepted
- Whether a replacement or refund is available for a dead-on-arrival part
- Whether a bundle discount disappears if one item is returned
- Whether you would actually use a store credit, rebate, or membership benefit
- Whether a manufacturer warranty requires proof of purchase from an authorized seller
A listing that is $10 cheaper can become more expensive after shipping, tax, an extended warranty, or the loss of a bundle discount. Taxes and inventory also vary by state, destination, retailer, seller, and checkout date, so no displayed price should be treated as universal.
Direct retail versus marketplace sellers
“Sold and shipped by” is one of the most important details on any product page. These arrangements are not interchangeable:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Sold and shipped by the retailer: Usually the clearest support and return path.
- Sold by a third party and shipped by the retailer: Fulfillment may be handled by the retailer, but seller-specific conditions can still apply.
- Sold and shipped by a third party: The marketplace seller may control shipping, returns, and warranty documentation.
- Official manufacturer storefront: Often easier to authenticate, although it is not automatically the cheapest or easiest option.
- Open-box, refurbished, renewed, or used: Condition, accessories, warranty coverage, and return eligibility require separate verification.
Newegg distinguishes direct Newegg orders from marketplace orders, and its policy materials explain that marketplace-seller rules may apply to those purchases. See its U.S. shipping guidance and returns resources.
Best Buy also treats marketplace purchases differently. Its marketplace FAQ says marketplace items are excluded from its Price Match Guarantee. Always verify the seller immediately before paying, not just when you first open the product page.
Best retailer for each PC component
CPU
Micro Center is often the strongest starting point when a nearby store offers a CPU-platform bundle. Otherwise, compare direct-retail inventory at Newegg, Amazon, and Best Buy.
Confirm the CPU socket, retail-box versus OEM or tray condition, included cooler, motherboard BIOS support, and the return policy for opened packaging. Read bundle terms before ordering: returning only one component can reduce or eliminate the advertised discount. Newegg’s combo and kit guidance explains how bundled refunds can be calculated.

Motherboards are poor candidates for unknown marketplace sellers because defects may be intermittent, accessories may be missing, and a problem may not appear until the build is assembled.
RAM
Compare the exact capacity, number of modules, rated speed, timings, and XMP or EXPO support. Buy a matched kit rather than combining separate kits that merely share the same advertised speed. A memory profile is not a guarantee that every CPU and motherboard combination will operate at that setting.
Keep the retailer return window in mind if the system fails memory tests or becomes unstable. Test the kit promptly instead of leaving it unopened for weeks.

For a GPU, seller authenticity and return handling are usually worth more than the absolute lowest price. Check the precise model, VRAM capacity, dimensions, power requirements, connector type, condition, warranty transferability, and shipping protection.
A slightly more expensive GPU from a direct retailer with straightforward replacement or local-return options can be a better risk-adjusted purchase than a cheaper listing with uncertain warranty support.
SSD
Verify the exact model, not just the capacity. Compare NAND type where relevant, endurance rating, warranty length, firmware support, and seller identity. Unknown marketplace sellers create additional counterfeit and misrepresentation risk.
After installation, use the manufacturer’s utility to verify the drive model and capacity, provided doing so will not jeopardize return eligibility. Keep the invoice and serial number for warranty claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPower supply
Buy a new PSU from a reputable retailer or recognized manufacturer channel. Avoid unknown used units and extremely cheap unbranded models; a power supply is one of the worst places to maximize marketplace savings.
Check wattage, the relevant ATX specification, native GPU connector support, independent electrical testing, warranty length, modularity, and the seller’s return procedure. Manufacturer warranty coverage may depend on region, authorized purchase, and proof of purchase.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Case
Buy a case wherever the total delivered cost and return process make sense. Cases are bulky, shipping can erase a price advantage, and return shipping may be expensive. Local pickup can also reduce damage risk.
Check GPU length, CPU-cooler height, motherboard format, radiator support, fan mounts, and cable clearance before ordering.

CPU cooler and fans
Verify socket support, cooler height, radiator size, case clearance, noise characteristics, and included mounting hardware. Liquid coolers deserve extra attention to return support because pump failure or missing hardware may only become apparent during installation.
Fans, cables, thermal paste, dust filters, and other inexpensive accessories are generally lower-risk marketplace purchases, although seller quality still matters.
Retailer-by-retailer guide
Micro Center: best for platform bundles and local pickup
Micro Center is often the best value for CPU, motherboard, and RAM combinations when you live near a participating store and the current promotion matches your parts list. Immediate pickup and in-store returns can also be valuable for a first-time builder or urgent repair.
The limitation is geography. Store inventory, promotions, and bundle eligibility can vary by location, and a bundle is not a bargain if it forces you into an unwanted motherboard or memory kit. Calculate the value of every included component rather than assuming the advertised discount is pure savings.
Newegg: best for PC-focused selection and combo deals
Newegg typically offers one of the broadest PC-component catalogs, along with compatibility-oriented tools, combo promotions, and new, open-box, and marketplace listings.
Its main weakness is that not every listing has the same policy. Use seller and fulfillment fields as mandatory filters, especially for GPUs, CPUs, motherboards, SSDs, PSUs, and high-capacity memory. Open-box savings are only worthwhile when the listing defines the condition, accessories, warranty, and return window clearly.
Amazon: best for convenience and delivery
Amazon is convenient for commodity parts, storage, memory, fans, cables, and mainstream components. It can also be useful for urgent replacements.

However, several sellers may appear on one product page, and reviews may combine different sellers, conditions, or revisions. Prefer “Sold by Amazon.com” or a clearly identified official manufacturer storefront. Check both “Sold by” and “Shipped by” before payment, and do not rely on the product title or review count alone.
Best Buy: best for local returns and pickup
Best Buy is particularly useful when a desired GPU or component is available for store pickup, or when you value returning a defective item locally instead of shipping it back.
Selection may be smaller than at Newegg or Amazon, and category, membership, condition, and seller can affect the return period. Review the current return and exchange policy for the actual item. Do not assume a marketplace listing receives the same price-match treatment as direct Best Buy inventory.
B&H Photo Video: a worthwhile specialist comparison
B&H Photo Video is worth checking for enthusiast components, displays, storage, creator hardware, networking equipment, and accessories. It is a reputable specialist alternative, but the displayed price is not automatically the lowest delivered price.
Compare the final checkout total, shipping, tax treatment for your destination, inventory status, and return terms. Do not assume that any tax advantage applies to every buyer or product.

Manufacturer stores
Stores and product pages from AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, Corsair, Crucial, Samsung, and Western Digital can help with authenticity, specifications, warranty registration, and replacement parts. Manufacturer-direct purchasing is not automatically cheaper or easier to return, so treat it as an additional verification and warranty route rather than a universal winner.
How to use PCPartPicker correctly
PCPartPicker should be your planning and comparison layer, not your final purchasing decision.
- Create the complete build list.
- Review compatibility warnings, including socket, memory, power, and physical-clearance issues.
- Compare retailer prices for every part.
- Open the destination retailer page and verify the exact product, condition, seller, and fulfillment method.
- Recalculate the complete cart with shipping, sales tax, bundle discounts, rebates, and return terms.
- Recheck inventory and delivery immediately before ordering.
PCPartPicker cannot guarantee BIOS versions, memory stability, firmware behavior, physical clearance in every configuration, shipping condition, seller authenticity, or warranty support. Never click the cheapest linked listing without inspecting the retailer page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.New, open-box, refurbished, or used?
For most builders, use this risk ladder:
- New, sold directly by a reputable retailer
- New from an official manufacturer storefront
- Reputable open-box inventory with a defined return period
- Refurbished hardware with a documented warranty
- Used hardware from a trusted seller with testing evidence
- Unknown marketplace or peer-to-peer listing
Open-box can make sense for cases, coolers, and some GPUs if all accessories are included, the condition grade has a defined meaning, the item is not sold “as-is,” and the return window is meaningful.
Best Value
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Used hardware may be reasonable for older CPUs, cases, fans, and non-critical accessories. Be much more cautious with PSUs, SSDs with unknown write history, liquid coolers, mining-exposed GPUs, motherboards with bent pins or missing accessories, and RAM without a return option.
For peer-to-peer purchases, prefer local testing, serial-number verification, a written bill of sale, and a return or escrow mechanism where possible. Peer-to-peer sellers are not equivalent to established retailers.
Checkout checklist
Before paying, record or confirm:
- Exact model number, capacity, revision, and included accessories
- New, open-box, refurbished, renewed, or used condition
- “Sold by” and “Shipped by” information
- Seller rating and history, if marketplace-listed
- Delivery estimate and shipping charge
- Sales tax and final checkout total
- Return deadline, restocking fee, and return-shipping responsibility
- Replacement versus refund procedure for defective items
- Warranty provider and proof-of-purchase requirements
- Bundle conditions, including whether all items must be returned together
Save a screenshot or PDF of the product page, seller, price, promotion, delivery estimate, return language, and warranty language. Photograph the serial number and packaging after delivery.
What to do when a part fails
Damaged package or product
Photograph the shipping box before opening, then photograph the internal packaging and the part. Keep every box, seal, insert, and accessory. Contact the retailer promptly and request a replacement or refund under its stated DOA process. Do not begin a manufacturer RMA before checking whether the retailer’s return window is still open.
Counterfeit or incorrect-capacity product
Stop using it and preserve labels, packaging, order records, and messages. Contact the retailer and, if necessary, the payment provider or platform buyer-protection process. Use manufacturer validation software only when it will not affect return eligibility.
Marketplace seller disappears
Open the platform’s formal buyer-protection case and preserve tracking information, photographs, invoices, and messages. Do not assume the manufacturer warranty will solve the problem; some warranties require proof of purchase from an authorized seller.
CPU, motherboard, or RAM fails to boot
- Confirm motherboard power connections.
- Reseat the RAM and test one module at a time.
- Check diagnostic LEDs or beep codes.
- Clear CMOS.
- Verify BIOS support for the CPU.
- Test outside the case if a short is suspected.
- Try a known-good PSU or display cable where available.
- Stop troubleshooting before the retailer return window expires.
One retailer or several?
Splitting the order is usually sensible when different retailers offer better combinations of price, availability, delivery, and protection. This is especially true for a Micro Center platform bundle, a locally available GPU, or cheaper storage and memory elsewhere.
Consolidating the order can still be worthwhile when it unlocks free shipping, a bundle discount, simpler returns, fewer packages, or easier order management. Compare the complete carts, not isolated line items. A slightly higher total may be reasonable if it materially reduces return friction or delivery risk.
