The best online paralegal program depends on your starting point. For a fully online, ABA-approved bachelor’s degree, the University of Cincinnati is the strongest overall fit in this review. National University is a compelling structured bachelor’s option with multiple legal specialties. For a lower-cost entry degree, the University of Alaska Fairbanks stands out with an ABA-approved online associate program and a required 150-hour internship. Loyola University Chicago and Peirce College are particularly well suited to working adults completing a degree after prior college coursework, while Edmonds College is a strong transfer-oriented associate option.
There is no universally best school. Before enrolling, compare the degree level, ABA status, institutional accreditation, live-class requirements, transfer rules, internship logistics, total net cost, and availability in your state. This guide focuses on academic degrees. A degree is not the same as a school-issued paralegal certificate or an individual professional certification.
What is a paralegal degree?
A paralegal degree teaches the legal research, writing, procedure, technology, ethics, and case-management skills used in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, and nonprofits. Typical work includes researching law, drafting documents, organizing case files, supporting discovery and litigation, preparing filings, and assisting with client communication under attorney supervision.

A paralegal is not a lawyer. Paralegals generally may not provide independent legal advice, represent clients in court, or practice law without the required attorney supervision. The American Bar Association explains the role and supervision relationship.
An online paralegal degree is also not a law degree. It does not qualify a graduate to take a bar examination or practice as an attorney. The University of Cincinnati specifically warns that paralegal education is not equivalent to law school, that graduates are not eligible for the bar exam, and that paralegal credits do not automatically create advanced standing in law school.
Degree, certificate, and certification are different
- Degree: An associate or bachelor’s academic credential requiring a defined number of college credits.
- Paralegal certificate: A college or university completion credential, often designed for someone who already has a bachelor’s degree. It is not a degree and is not professional certification.
- Professional certification: A voluntary individual credential, usually involving eligibility requirements and an examination, such as NALA’s Certified Paralegal credential.
- ABA approval: External approval of a paralegal education program, not certification of the student or graduate.
Do not describe yourself as an “ABA-certified paralegal.” The ABA approves educational programs; it does not certify individual paralegals. Its certificate-versus-certification explanation covers this distinction.

1. University of Cincinnati: best overall fully online ABA-approved bachelor’s option
Program: Online B.S. in Law and Paralegal Studies
Best for: A student who wants an ABA-approved bachelor’s degree without advertised campus visits.
UC states that the program is 100% online and requires no campus visits. It offers full-time and part-time scheduling, multiple start dates, transfer-credit review, attorney-taught courses, and synchronous online legal-specialty coursework. That combination makes it the strongest all-around choice for a student who needs a complete online bachelor’s option and can attend scheduled live classes.
The important limitation is entry level. UC directs applicants with fewer than 60 college credits toward its associate program first. That makes the B.S. especially attractive to transfer students or adults with substantial prior college credit, rather than necessarily the simplest starting point for a first-time college student.
UC currently lists a 2.5 cumulative GPA for consideration and requires official transcripts. Its online application fee is listed as waived through Spring 2027 for online applicants. The program page does not publish one all-in degree price, so ask for a written estimate after the school evaluates your transcript.

Delivery reality: Fully online with no campus visits advertised, but at least nine legal-specialty credits must be completed through synchronous instruction. Ask for the live meeting days and times before enrolling.
Bottom line: Choose UC if no-campus attendance and ABA approval are your highest priorities. Do not assume that online means asynchronous.
2. National University: best structured bachelor’s with multiple specialties
Program: B.S. in Paralegal Studies
Best for: Adults who want a conventional 120-credit bachelor’s curriculum with focused legal coursework.
National University advertises a 100% online B.S. in Paralegal Studies. The institution is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, and the paralegal program is ABA-approved. The curriculum covers legal research and writing, legal technology, litigation, corporations, criminal law, and two writing capstones. Students also earn certificates in corporations, litigation, and criminal law.
The degree requires 120 semester credits, including 51 upper-division credits. At least 30 credits must be completed in residence at National University. “Residence” does not necessarily tell you whether physical campus attendance is required, so ask the program how those credits are delivered and whether your state and preferred format are supported.
National University advertises year-round enrollment and a recommended 48-month completion time. Applications are reviewed year-round, but the school warns that program availability and modality can vary by state or location.
Delivery reality: Online delivery is advertised, but course-based scheduling and the 30-credit institutional-residency rule require careful planning.
Bottom line: National University is a strong fit if you want structured legal specializations and an adult-learner-oriented schedule. Get a program-specific transfer evaluation before treating the 48-month estimate as your timeline.

UAF offers the A.A.S. online, in person, and in hybrid formats. Its curriculum includes legal research and writing, civil procedure, family law, constitutional law, law-office computers, ethics, discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation. A required 150-hour internship gives students supervised experience rather than only simulated assignments.
UAF publishes an estimated total program cost of $18,390, subject to change. It also states that online students pay in-state tuition regardless of where they live, which can make the program particularly attractive to students comparing public-school pricing. Confirm the current estimate, mandatory fees, books, and financial-aid treatment.
There is a scheduling trade-off: at least nine credits must be completed through synchronous online class meetings because of ABA requirements. The internship may also require a local placement, a fixed schedule, transportation, or background screening. Ask whether UAF can help arrange a placement near your home.

4. Loyola University Chicago: best adult bachelor’s-completion pathway
Program: B.A. in Paralegal Studies
Best for: Adults who already have an associate degree, paralegal coursework, or substantial transferable credits.
Loyola’s program is an adult degree-completion pathway. The bachelor’s degree totals 120 credits, while the paralegal major itself is a 40-credit component. The program uses eight-week sessions and offers evening and Saturday options. It is ABA-approved and includes an embedded Dual Litigation & Corporate Practice Certificate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Loyola says all courses are offered online at least once per year, but that does not mean every required course is asynchronous or available in every session. At least nine semester credits of ABA-designated legal-specialty coursework must be completed through a traditional classroom or synchronous online instruction. The catalog also describes internship courses involving on-site experience with law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies; those internships are described as unpaid.
Students with an associate degree in paralegal studies may move through the program more efficiently, but only a transcript evaluation can establish the actual remaining credits. Loyola lists a minimum 2.0 GPA and official transcripts among its admissions requirements.
Cost is the major caution. Loyola’s 2026–27 undergraduate tuition for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies is listed at $860 per credit before mandatory fees. For illustration only, 40 remaining major credits at that rate would equal $34,400 before fees; the total cost of completing the degree depends on how many general-education and elective credits remain.
Delivery reality: Online courses are available, with required traditional or synchronous legal-specialty coursework and possible on-site internship obligations.

5. Peirce College: best stackable option for working adults
Programs: A.S. and B.S. in Paralegal Studies
Best for: Working adults who want to begin with an associate degree and later build toward a bachelor’s degree.
Peirce offers ABA-approved associate, bachelor’s, and post-baccalaureate paralegal programs. The A.S. is listed at 61 credits and the B.S. at 121 credits. The curriculum includes legal research, legal writing, civil litigation, contract, tort and criminal law, legal technology, family law, real estate law, business organizations, advanced research, and a capstone.
The school is designed around adult learners and offers online and hybrid formats. Peirce advertises up to 30 transfer credits toward the associate degree and substantially higher transfer-credit limits for the bachelor’s degree. Because transfer rules differ by credential and transcript, request the exact evaluation in writing.
Students who have not transferred equivalent foundational coursework from another ABA-approved institution may be required to take live foundational courses. These may be live online classes rather than campus meetings, but the schedule still matters for a student who works nights or needs entirely asynchronous study.

- Multiple Lighting Choices. This led desktop lamp offers 5 lighting modes that can each be paired with one of the 5 brightness levels for a total of 25 different light settings.
- Eye Care Diffused Non-Flickering Lighting. With frosted shade and a long lamp head, it cast a broader span of soft light, efficiently reduce the contrast between your monitor and the surrounding area, creating a more comfortable environment for your eyes.
- Sleek and Minimalist. It won’t hog space on your desk, fits nicely in any desk, work bench, sewing table, bedside nightstands, nail station etc.
- Energy Saving LED Lamp No Heat Up. Reduce the electricity bill by 75% and do not overheat like other traditional lights. Keep your workspace cool and comfortable.
- Fully Adjustable Angle. Flexible to bend the main body of the lamp and the top light bar. You can focus the light exactly where you need it.
The associate-degree page lists $600 per credit. Treat that as a published rate to confirm rather than a guaranteed all-in price; ask about fees, books, software, aid, and whether the rate applies to every term and student category.
Delivery reality: Online and hybrid options, with live foundational coursework required for some students.
Bottom line: Peirce is attractive when transferability, adult scheduling, and a stackable associate-to-bachelor’s plan matter more than the lowest advertised price.
6. Edmonds College: best transfer-oriented online associate degree
Program: A.A.S.-T in Paralegal
Best for: Students who want an associate credential that is designed for both employment and transfer.
Edmonds describes this as an ABA-approved Paralegal Associate in Applied Science-Transfer degree. Its suggested pathway is designed to be completed completely online, and the degree is intended to prepare students for immediate employment or transfer to a four-year institution as a junior.
The transfer label is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every bachelor’s program will accept every credit. Before enrolling, ask the intended four-year school to review the Edmonds curriculum and confirm whether legal-specialty, general-education, and elective credits will apply as expected.
Delivery reality: The suggested pathway is completely online, but current course offerings and any synchronous requirements must be confirmed for your intended terms.
Bottom line: Edmonds deserves consideration when your goal is a transfer-friendly associate degree rather than simply the fastest online credential.
Other programs to investigate carefully
| Program | Credential or format | What it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Penn College | Paralegal associate and legal-studies bachelor’s options | Students who can attend required in-person legal-specialty instruction | The program requires 10 hours of legal-specialty courses in a traditional face-to-face format, so it is not a true no-campus option. |
| Roger Williams University | B.S. in Paralegal Studies | Students able to meet classroom requirements | Program materials state that 10 legal-specialty credits must be taken in a classroom setting. BestColleges reported $433 per credit in its 2026 comparison, but verify that figure against the university’s current rate sheet. |
| Grand View University | B.A. in Paralegal Studies | Students with prior paralegal training seeking bachelor’s completion | Inspected coverage identifies it as non-ABA-approved and designed for students with prior paralegal education. Confirm current online availability and institutional accreditation. |
| Regent University | Online B.S. in Paralegal Studies | Students seeking a Christian-worldview program | ABA approval was not verified in the inspected sources. Confirm accreditation, curriculum, delivery, and certification implications directly. |
| National American University | Online A.A.S. and B.S. in Paralegal Studies | Students seeking online study at an HLC-accredited institution | ABA approval was not verified in the inspected sources. Confirm current program availability, transfer policies, total cost, and state authorization. |
| National Paralegal College/Crestpoint | Online paralegal-related degrees and programs | Students comparing additional online alternatives | Verify the current credential, institutional accreditation, ABA status, tuition, and whether the program meets your intended certification route. |
These programs should not be compared as though they are interchangeable. The table mixes associate degrees, full bachelor’s degrees, completion programs, and non-ABA alternatives because students often encounter all of them in the same search results.
Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or certificate?
Choose an associate degree when you need a first college credential
An associate degree is usually the most economical conventional degree for a student starting without prior college credentials. It may be enough for entry-level paralegal work, particularly when it includes legal-specialty courses and an internship. It also gives you a credential you can use while deciding whether to continue toward a bachelor’s degree.
The trade-off is long-term flexibility. Some large employers prefer a bachelor’s degree, and an A.A.S. can be more career-focused and less universally transferable than an A.A. or A.S. Ask the target bachelor’s institution exactly how the A.A.S. will apply before assuming it transfers cleanly.
Choose a bachelor’s degree for broader long-term flexibility
A bachelor’s degree makes sense for a student starting college who wants the broadest future options, a paralegal seeking advancement, or an applicant targeting employers that prefer a four-year credential. It may also be useful for someone considering graduate or law-school applications, although the major itself does not guarantee admission.
A bachelor’s is not automatically the better financial decision. A high-priced program with weak practical training, limited transfer credit, or poor career support may be a worse investment than an affordable associate degree followed by a carefully selected completion program.
Choose a post-baccalaureate certificate if you already have a bachelor’s degree
If you already hold a bachelor’s degree in another subject, a second bachelor’s degree is often unnecessary. A reputable post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate may provide the legal-specialty education employers and certification organizations look for without requiring you to repeat general education.
Compare the certificate’s ABA status, institutional accreditation, course content, internship or capstone, total cost, and eligibility for your intended professional certification. Boston University’s certificate-versus-degree explanation is a useful starting point, but you should compare several schools rather than assume every certificate has the same value.

Is ABA approval required?
No national law requires every paralegal to graduate from an ABA-approved program. Employers, state associations, and certification organizations may nevertheless prefer or require particular educational standards. ABA approval can provide a useful external quality signal because the review considers curriculum, faculty, advisory input, student services, career services, library resources, and institutional support.

ABA approval does not guarantee low tuition, excellent teaching, job placement, or an asynchronous schedule. The ABA does not rank programs, and a non-ABA program can still be institutionally accredited, practical, affordable, and respected by local employers.
Use the ABA Paralegal Resource Directory to check the exact program. The directory uses an online designation when at least one online program is available and tells prospective students to contact the institution for details. The directory is updated in February and August. Do not assume that approval of one credential covers every paralegal degree offered by the school.
Institutional accreditation is separate
- Institutional accreditation applies to the college or university. It is relevant to federal financial aid, transfer-credit evaluation, and institutional quality oversight.
- ABA program approval applies to the paralegal educational program.
- Professional certification applies to an individual who meets an organization’s education, experience, and examination requirements.
The accurate phrase is ABA-approved paralegal education program, not ABA-accredited paralegal degree. Ask the school which institution-wide accreditor currently recognizes it and confirm that status in the accreditor’s own database when possible.

What online really means
Online delivery has at least four different meanings in this field:
- Fully online with no campus visits advertised: UC uses this description for its B.S. program, although synchronous legal-specialty classes still apply.
- Online with mandatory live classes: UC, UAF, and Loyola each require at least nine credits of legal-specialty coursework through synchronous instruction or, in Loyola’s case, traditional classroom instruction.
- Online/hybrid with face-to-face requirements: Central Penn requires 10 hours of legal-specialty coursework in a traditional face-to-face format, and Roger Williams materials require 10 legal-specialty credits in a classroom.
- Online courses available but not every course every term: This can affect National University, Loyola, Peirce, community colleges, and other schools. A degree page does not prove that every required course will be offered online in your preferred session.
Before applying, ask:
- Are all required courses available online from my state?
- Are classes asynchronous, live online, or hybrid?
- What days and times are live classes held?
- Are live sessions recorded?
- Are exams proctored in person?
- Does orientation require attendance?
- Can the internship be completed near my home or remotely?
- Does the phrase 100% online exclude internship, examination, or state-specific requirements?
Internships and practical training
Practical training should be a major selection criterion. A strong program should build more than textbook knowledge through supervised experience, simulated cases, legal research and writing, pleadings, discovery, trial preparation, client communication, legal technology, document management, and a portfolio-quality writing sample.
UAF advertises a required 150-hour internship. Loyola’s catalog describes internship courses involving on-site experience with law firms, corporate legal departments, or government agencies and describes those internships as unpaid. Grand View requires an internship for its bachelor’s program. Other programs may emphasize capstones or simulated cases instead of a placement-based internship.
An internship is not automatically convenient or financially beneficial. Ask:

- Do internship credits count toward the degree?
Cost: compare your net remaining price, not the advertised rate
There is no single national price that predicts what an online paralegal degree will cost you. Your bill depends on public or private status, residency, accepted transfer credits, mandatory fees, books, legal-research databases, software, internship expenses, the school’s billing model, financial aid, and employer tuition assistance.
Use this formula:
Total estimated cost = required credits remaining × current tuition per credit + mandatory fees + books and materials + internship or technology costs − grants, scholarships, employer aid, and transfer-credit savings.
Published examples show why headline tuition rates are not directly comparable:
- UAF publishes an estimated total cost of $18,390 for its online associate degree, subject to change.
- Loyola lists 2026–27 tuition of $860 per credit for its School of Continuing and Professional Studies, before mandatory fees. A student with 40 remaining credits would face a $34,400 tuition illustration before fees, but the student’s actual remaining credits could be different.
- Peirce lists $600 per credit on its current associate-degree page. Confirm whether the rate applies to your student category, every term, and all required credits.
- BestColleges reported $433 per credit for Roger Williams in its 2026 comparison, but Roger Williams has classroom requirements and the price should be checked against the university’s current rate sheet.
For financial-aid planning, ask each school for a written degree map showing accepted transfer credits, remaining credits, required fees, book and software costs, internship expenses, refund rules, and the estimated net price after aid. Check federal-aid eligibility, institutional scholarships, military or veteran benefits, employer reimbursement, and whether military or prior-learning credit can reduce the number of credits you must buy. A transfer-credit review is especially important for military members, veterans, and students who have attended multiple colleges.
How long does an online paralegal degree take?
- Associate degree: About two years full time, although transfer credits and course availability can shorten or extend the schedule.
- Full bachelor’s degree: About four years from the beginning in a conventional 120-credit plan.
- Bachelor’s completion: Often one to three years, depending on accepted credits and enrollment intensity.
- Post-baccalaureate certificate: Commonly about one year, although the curriculum and schedule vary.
National University publishes a recommended 48-month completion time for its 120-credit B.S. Loyola uses eight-week sessions and permits full- or part-time enrollment. UC offers part-time and full-time schedules and multiple starts. UAF’s 150-hour internship is an additional scheduling obligation even if the coursework is online.
An accelerated program usually means a heavier workload or shorter academic terms, not fewer total credits. Confirm whether the school offers every required course in sequence and whether dropping one class could delay graduation by a full term.
Certification after graduation
A degree does not automatically make you nationally certified. NALA identifies several education and experience routes for its Certified Paralegal credential, including graduation from an ABA-approved program, graduation from an institutionally accredited non-ABA program requiring at least 60 semester hours, and combinations involving a bachelor’s degree and supervised experience. Requirements can change, so check the current NALA professional standards and eligibility requirements before choosing a program around certification.
Other individual credentials include NFPA’s PACE/RP and PCCE/CRP credentials and NALS credentials. These are separate from ABA approval and from a school-issued certificate. The school should not promise that its degree guarantees certification, and you should verify the current requirements with the organization issuing the credential.

Career outlook and return-on-investment reality
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 376,200 paralegal and legal-assistant jobs in 2024, median annual pay of $61,010 in May 2024, and approximately 39,300 openings per year projected from 2024 through 2034. The projected employment change is 0%, meaning most openings are expected to come from replacement needs rather than net job growth. An associate degree or paralegal certificate is the typical entry-level education, although some employers prefer a bachelor’s degree. See the BLS occupational profile for the current figures.

This is a field with continuing job openings, but it should not be marketed as uniformly fast-growing. Routine legal tasks are also being changed by document automation, legal technology, and artificial intelligence. A financially sensible program should teach legal research and writing alongside e-discovery, document management, office software, confidentiality, and technology-assisted workflows.
Do not treat a school’s employment claim as a guarantee. If a program advertises a placement rate, ask for the number of graduates surveyed, response rate, graduation years, definition of employment, and whether the jobs were specifically paralegal positions. A high percentage among respondents is not the same as an outcome for every graduate.
Choose based on your education level and goal
If you have no college credits
Start with an associate program such as UAF or Edmonds if cost, speed, and practical training matter. Choose a bachelor’s from the beginning only if the additional cost and time fit your budget and you want the broader credential. Compare A.A.S. transfer rules with your intended bachelor’s school before selecting an associate program.
If you have some college or an associate degree
Prioritize transcript evaluations from UC, National University, Loyola, Peirce, and other completion programs. Compare the credits accepted, legal-specialty credit restrictions, institutional-residency requirement, remaining tuition, and course availability. Loyola and Peirce are particularly relevant to adult completion; UC is strongest when you need a fully online ABA-approved bachelor’s route and have enough credits for its intended pathway.
If you already have a bachelor’s degree
Compare a post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate before considering a second bachelor’s degree. A second degree may make sense if you need a particular academic credential, want extensive undergraduate coursework, or have a specific employer or certification reason. Otherwise, repeating general education can increase cost without improving your employment prospects proportionately.
If you want to attend law school
A paralegal program may give you useful exposure to legal vocabulary, research, writing, and procedure, but it does not replace the bachelor’s degree typically required for law-school admission, a J.D., or bar eligibility. Paralegal credits do not automatically shorten law school. If becoming a lawyer is your primary goal, compare the cost and flexibility of a conventional bachelor’s degree with a vocationally focused paralegal major.
If you need completely asynchronous study
Many ABA-approved options may not fit because current programs frequently require live synchronous legal-specialty classes. A non-ABA institutionally accredited program may provide more asynchronous flexibility, but check employer recognition, transfer rules, certification eligibility, internship requirements, and state availability before giving up ABA approval.

If you want remote employment
An online degree does not guarantee a remote paralegal job. Remote positions may require prior office experience, specialized practice-area knowledge, strong legal-technology skills, and the ability to handle confidential information securely. An internship, writing portfolio, and experience with legal databases can be as important as the delivery format of your degree.
If you are outside the United States
This list is focused on U.S. programs, U.S. legal education, and U.S. certification pathways. Program availability, legal content, employment rules, and professional credentials may not transfer to another country.
If you have a criminal record
A conviction does not automatically make paralegal employment impossible, but internships and legal employers may conduct background checks. Ask the school about placement screening, disclosure requirements, and how its career office handles applicants with records before paying a deposit.
If you want to work directly with the public
Ordinary paralegal education does not authorize independent legal advice or representation. Limited-license frameworks are separate and state-specific. The ABA discusses Utah’s Licensed Paralegal Practitioner framework and other developments in its access-to-justice coverage. Do not choose a standard paralegal degree assuming it gives you a public-practice license.
A practical decision tree
- Already have a bachelor’s degree? Compare post-baccalaureate certificates first.
- Need your first college credential? Compare associate degrees, especially public programs with transfer pathways.
- Have at least 60 transferable credits? Compare bachelor’s-completion options and request official transcript evaluations.
- Need zero campus attendance? Exclude programs with classroom requirements and confirm internship and exam exceptions.
- Need asynchronous study only? Obtain the live-class schedule before applying; an online label is not enough.
- Want ABA approval? Check the exact program in the current ABA directory and confirm what portion is online.
- Need the lowest total price? Compare net remaining cost after transfer credits, aid, fees, books, and internship expenses—not just tuition per credit.
Questions to ask admissions before enrolling
- Is the entire degree available online from my state?
- Are any classes, exams, orientations, or internships required on campus?
- Which classes meet synchronously, and at what times?
- Are live sessions recorded?
- How many of my credits will transfer?
- Are legal-specialty transfer credits limited or required to come from an ABA-approved program?
- How many credits must I complete at your institution?
- Is an internship required, and can it be completed near my home or remotely?
- Who finds the internship placement?
- What is my estimated total cost after transfer credits and financial aid?
- Are textbooks, Westlaw, Lexis, databases, software, or technology fees extra?
- What are the latest program-specific employment outcomes, including the cohort, response rate, and definition of employment?
- Does this program qualify me for the certification I want?
- Is the exact program listed in the current ABA directory?
- What happens if a required course is not offered online during my intended term?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming 100% online means asynchronous: Several ABA-approved programs require live legal-specialty classes.
- Calling a program ABA-accredited: Use ABA-approved paralegal education program.
- Confusing a certificate with certification: A school certificate and a professional credential are different.
- Choosing a bachelor’s for everyone: An associate degree or post-baccalaureate certificate may be the better financial fit.
- Comparing unlike programs: Separate full bachelor’s degrees, completion degrees, associate programs, certificates, ABA-approved options, and non-ABA alternatives.
- Ignoring transfer traps: A degree title does not tell you whether your prior credits apply to graduation.
- Using sticker price as total cost: Add fees, books, software, internship costs, and the credits you actually need to buy.
- Believing employment statistics guarantee a job: Inspect the methodology and compare the school’s claims with BLS market data.
- Assuming paralegal study shortens law school: It generally does not provide automatic advanced standing or bar eligibility.
- Assuming online study guarantees remote work: Employers may still expect office experience, legal technology skills, and secure handling of confidential information.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fully online ABA-approved bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies?
The University of Cincinnati is the strongest overall fit in this review because it advertises a 100% online B.S. with no campus visits and is ABA-approved. It still requires at least nine legal-specialty credits through synchronous instruction, and applicants with fewer than 60 college credits are directed toward the associate pathway.
Is an online paralegal degree worth the cost?
It can be worthwhile when the program’s net cost, transfer policy, practical training, and local employer recognition match your goal. Compare the actual credits remaining and total fees rather than relying on tuition per credit. The BLS reports a $61,010 median annual wage for paralegals and legal assistants in May 2024, but projects 0% employment growth from 2024 to 2034, so the credential is not a guaranteed return on investment.
Can a paralegal degree qualify me to become a lawyer?
No. A paralegal degree does not qualify you for the bar examination or independent legal practice. It may provide legal exposure, but it does not replace the bachelor’s degree generally required for law-school admission, a J.D., or bar eligibility.
Is ABA approval required to work as a paralegal?
No national law requires every paralegal to graduate from an ABA-approved program. However, some employers, associations, and certification pathways may value or require particular educational standards. Check the exact program in the ABA’s current directory and verify your target employer’s expectations.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould someone with a bachelor’s degree earn another bachelor’s in paralegal studies?
Often not. A post-baccalaureate paralegal certificate may provide the required legal-specialty training more quickly and cheaply. Compare the certificate’s accreditation, ABA status, internship or capstone, employer recognition, and eligibility for your intended professional certification before committing to a second degree.
The Bottom Line
Choose the program that fits your starting point, not the school with the most attractive ranking. UC is the leading fully online ABA-approved bachelor’s option in this comparison; National University is a strong structured alternative with specialties; UAF offers the clearest practical and value-oriented associate pathway; Loyola and Peirce suit adult completion and stackable credentials; and Edmonds is worth a look for transfer-oriented students. Before enrolling, obtain a written transcript evaluation, confirm every live or in-person requirement, calculate your net remaining cost, and verify the program’s current ABA status and availability in your state.
