There was no single, authoritative ranking of the best online Executive MBA programs in 2022. The closest match was Bankrate’s U.S.-focused online-EMBA list, which identified the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, California State University, San Bernardino, Washington State University, the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. RIT Saunders also deserves attention because its explicitly named online Executive MBA tied for No. 9 in U.S. News’ broader 2022 online MBA ranking.
For executives who do not need an EMBA title, Indiana Kelley, UNC Kenan-Flagler and USC Marshall were the three programs tied for No. 1 in U.S. News’ 2022 online MBA ranking; USC Marshall ranked No. 1 in Poets&Quants’ separate 2022 online MBA ranking.

Because the available rankings measured different products, the most accurate answer is a set of best-fit recommendations rather than one universal winner.

| Named online-EMBA list specifically covering 2022 | UH Mānoa, CSUSB, Washington State, Nevada Reno or UNC Wilmington | These were the five schools identified in Bankrate’s 2022 online-EMBA coverage. The accessible official corroboration confirms the schools but does not establish a reliable first-through-fifth order. |
| Named online EMBA with a strong U.S. News result | RIT Saunders | Its online Executive MBA tied for No. 9 in the 2022 U.S. News Best Online MBA Programs ranking. |
| Customizable distance EMBA | University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa | UH was identified as Bankrate’s best online executive MBA for a customizable degree. |
| Established fully online EMBA | Washington State or Nevada Reno | Both offered established online executive formats; WSU’s current page describes 100% online coursework, while Nevada reported an experienced, small-cohort model. |
| Accelerated EMBA with in-person experiences | UNC Wilmington | Its current format uses seven-week courses, campus residencies and an international or alternative domestic experience, with completion advertised as soon as 12 months for a full-time load. |
| High-prestige online EMBA entrant in 2022 | Emory Goizueta | Emory launched a fully online EMBA format for its fall 2022 cohort, using the same courses and faculty as its other EMBA formats according to the launch announcement. |
| Best-known general online MBA options for experienced professionals | Indiana Kelley, UNC Kenan-Flagler or USC Marshall | They tied for No. 1 in U.S. News’ 2022 online MBA ranking. |
These are editorial categories, not results from one mathematically unified ranking. A general online MBA can be a better choice for an experienced professional than a degree carrying the Executive MBA name, while a smaller EMBA may provide a more relevant peer group than a higher-ranked general program.
UH Mānoa’s official announcement of the Bankrate recognition is the accessible source for the five-school list and the customization category. Bankrate’s award methodology page provides additional context, but it does not support inventing an exact order for the other four programs.
What an online Executive MBA actually means
An Executive MBA is generally designed for experienced professionals who continue working while studying. The word online, however, describes delivery rather than a uniform student experience. Programs marketed as online executive MBAs can be fully remote, live and scheduled, asynchronous, or hybrid.
| Program type | What it usually means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Online EMBA | The degree is an Executive MBA designed for experienced professionals and delivered primarily or entirely online. | Whether live attendance is required, how experienced the cohort is, and whether any travel remains mandatory. |
| Online MBA for executives | A general MBA or executive concentration intended to accommodate working professionals. It may not be a formal EMBA. | The degree title on the transcript, work-experience expectations and whether the curriculum is designed for senior managers or a broader audience. |
| Hybrid EMBA | Online coursework combined with campus weekends, immersion modules or international residencies. | Number of trips, dates, location, whether remote alternatives exist and the cost of attendance beyond tuition. |
| Distance-learning EMBA | Often live, scheduled online instruction rather than self-paced study. | Time-zone requirements, attendance rules, group projects and the amount of asynchronous work. |
Online does not automatically mean self-paced, and executive does not automatically mean fully remote. UH Mānoa, for example, uses live interactive distance learning and begins with a residential module. UNC Wilmington includes campus and international experiences. Emory’s 2022 announcement allowed its immersion experiences to be completed in person or remotely. These programs should not be placed in a simple zero-travel table without examining the specific requirements.
Is an EMBA better than a regular online MBA?
Neither degree is automatically better. The better choice depends on your experience, career objective, preferred cohort and tolerance for travel.
Choose an EMBA when you:
- Already have substantial professional or management experience.
- Expect to remain employed throughout the program.
- Want to learn with other managers and executives who can contribute current workplace examples.
- Want structured leadership development, general management and peer networking rather than a narrow technical specialization.
- Are seeking advancement in your existing industry or organization rather than using the degree primarily to make an entry-level career switch.
Choose a standard online MBA when you:
- Have less experience or do not yet manage people, budgets or business functions.
- Want a broader range of electives or a stronger specialization menu.
- Are changing industries or functions and need a program designed for a wider student population.
- Prefer the programs most visible in general online MBA rankings.
- Need a format with fewer executive-specific assumptions about prior seniority.
The program label is only a starting point. Compare the actual cohort profile: average work experience, management experience, class size, industry mix and percentage of students already leading teams. An EMBA does not automatically produce a higher salary, faster promotion or better return on investment. Those outcomes are strongly affected by prior seniority, employer, industry, geography, employer sponsorship and the student’s existing career trajectory.
Which rankings covered online executive MBAs in 2022?
Bankrate: the closest match to the query
Bankrate’s 2022 coverage was the closest match to a list of online Executive MBA programs. The five schools identified in the official UH Mānoa corroboration were:

The same announcement described UH Mānoa as the best online executive MBA for a customizable degree. It does not provide a complete, dependable ordered table for the other four schools. Therefore, this article treats the five as Bankrate selections rather than claiming that one finished second, third, fourth or fifth.
U.S. News: online MBA, not online EMBA
U.S. News ranked Best Online MBA Programs in 2022 rather than publishing a separate online-EMBA category. Its reported leaders were:
| 2022 position | Programs |
|---|---|
| Tied No. 1 | Indiana University Kelley, UNC Kenan-Flagler and USC Marshall |
| No. 4 | Carnegie Mellon Tepper |
| Tied No. 5 | Florida Warrington and Washington Foster |
| Tied No. 7 | Arizona State Carey and Arizona Eller |
| Tied No. 9 | RIT Saunders, Texas-Dallas Jindal and Wisconsin MBA Consortium |
The source reported 328 numerically ranked online MBA programs and 358 participating programs in total; programs in the bottom quartile were displayed alphabetically rather than assigned individual numerical positions. It also described considerable year-over-year movement, including large gains by Pittsburgh and Texas Tech and substantial declines by some expensive programs. That volatility is one reason to use rankings as a screening tool, not as a final purchasing decision. Read the 2022 ranking coverage and methodology context.
RIT’s own announcement makes the category distinction particularly clear: its Saunders College online Executive MBA tied for No. 9 in the broader U.S. News Best Online MBA Programs ranking. Nevada separately reported that its Online Executive MBA was No. 62 in that same general online MBA ranking. Neither position is an online-EMBA-only ranking.
Poets&Quants: a different online MBA ranking
Poets&Quants’ 2022 ranking also covered online MBAs, not only Executive MBAs. It gave equal weight to three categories:
- Admissions standards
- Academic experience
- Career outcomes
The data came from school surveys and alumni surveys conducted between May and September 2021. The alumni survey covered graduates from July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2021. Its top five were USC Marshall, Carnegie Mellon Tepper, Santa Clara Leavey, Washington Foster and Indiana Kelley.
| Rank | Program | Historical listed cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | USC Marshall | $111,663 |
| 2 | Carnegie Mellon Tepper | $141,760 |
| 3 | Santa Clara Leavey | $83,510 |
| 4 | Washington Foster | $78,000 |
| 5 | Indiana Kelley | $78,246 |
| 6 | UNC Kenan-Flagler | $125,589 |
| 7 | Rice Jones | $109,930 |
| 8 | Baylor Hankamer | $51,264 |
| 9 | Lehigh | $41,595 |
| 10 | Jack Welch Management Institute | $48,695 |
These are historical figures listed in the 2022 ranking, not current tuition quotes. Poets&Quants included only participating programs and noted that some prominent programs were absent or too new to have graduate outcomes, including Illinois Gies, Michigan Ross and Boston University. Absence from this ranking is not proof of poor quality. See the full Poets&Quants 2022 ranking.
QS: separate online MBA and EMBA products
QS’s 2022 Online MBA ranking was global and evaluated factors including faculty and teaching, employability, class profile and class experience. IE Business School ranked first globally; Imperial and Warwick followed, and USC Marshall was identified as the highest-ranked U.S. program at No. 5 overall. This was an online MBA ranking, not an online EMBA ranking. The QS Online MBA summary is useful for global context.
Recommended Free Tools
QS’s 2022 Executive MBA ranking was a different product. It covered 220 global EMBA programs and measured employer reputation, thought leadership, executive profile, career outcomes and diversity. IESE ranked No. 1, HEC Paris No. 2 and Wharton No. 3. That ranking did not establish which programs were online. It should not be used as a list of online EMBAs. See QS’s 2022 Executive MBA methodology and results.
Best named online Executive MBA programs in the 2022 landscape
The following profiles combine the 2022 evidence with current school-page information where the dossier supplied it. Whenever a detail comes from a current page, it is labeled as current and should not be read backward as a 2022 fact.
1. University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa — Shidler College of Business
Why it made the 2022 shortlist: UH Mānoa was one of the five schools identified in Bankrate’s 2022 online-EMBA coverage and was singled out for a customizable degree.
Format and structure: The Distance Learning Executive MBA is described on the program page as a 48-credit program designed for completion in 22 months. It starts with an intensive residential module at the Mānoa campus and uses live, interactive distance-learning technology. Review the Distance Learning EMBA page for the program structure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Best fit: Professionals who want a live cohort, can attend a campus intensive, value customization and may benefit from Hawaiʻi’s regional network or local scholarship opportunities.
Main trade-offs: It is not fully remote because of the residential component. Live scheduled classes can be difficult across time zones, and travel and lodging belong in the total cost. The current tuition page lists a cohort-specific amount that should not be substituted for 2022 tuition.
Admissions and verification: Do not assume that a current test-score policy, work-experience threshold or course schedule was identical in 2022. Ask Shidler for the applicable cohort requirements and the exact number of required in-person days.
2. California State University, San Bernardino — MBA Online for Executives
Why it made the 2022 shortlist: CSUSB was one of Bankrate’s five 2022 online-EMBA selections. In a 2022 announcement, CSUSB also reported that its MBA portfolio included a fully online Executive MBA and that its online MBA was ranked No. 44 globally by CEO Magazine. That CEO Magazine result was not an EMBA-only ranking.
Format and structure: The current CSUSB description presents the online executive option as an AACSB-accredited program for early- or mid-career professionals. Its catalog describes a 30-unit Executive Concentration and a work-experience requirement. See the current program page and the catalog.
Best fit: Applicants seeking a public-university option, flexible online study, an executive concentration and an AACSB-accredited business school in the Southern California network.
Main trade-offs: The word executive does not necessarily mean that every classmate is a senior executive; CSUSB explicitly includes early- and mid-career professionals. Current fee information distinguishes its online MBA from other Executive MBA formats, so historical and current costs should not be blended. Check the fees and financing page.
Admissions and verification: Confirm whether the current work-experience rule, course cadence, asynchronous requirements and culminating experience match the version available to 2022 applicants.

Why it made the 2022 shortlist: Washington State was one of the five schools identified in Bankrate’s 2022 online-EMBA coverage. The Carson College of Business holds AACSB business accreditation.
Current format and structure: The current program page describes 42 credits, approximately 17 months, 100% online coursework and three starts per year. It also lists an optional international field study and describes a cohort of manager- and director-level professionals. Review the WSU Executive MBA page.
Best fit: Professionals who need a genuinely remote option, want a public research-university brand and prefer strategy, innovation and leadership development with optional international exposure.
Main trade-offs: Older third-party pages describe different credit totals and durations, so the current 42-credit, 17-month structure should not be silently presented as the 2022 version. A 100% online label does not rule out live meetings, fixed deadlines or group work. The optional field study adds travel and expense. The current page lists $1,395 per credit, but that is a 2026 figure, not a 2022 price.

Rank #3
4. University of Nevada, Reno — Online Executive MBA
Why it made the 2022 shortlist: Nevada was one of Bankrate’s five selections, and the school reported that its Online Executive MBA ranked No. 62 in U.S. News’ 2022 Best Online MBA Programs ranking.
2022 cohort evidence: The program began in August 2011. Nevada reported that its ninth cohort graduated in fall 2021 with 35 students and that entering students averaged 12 years of work experience. In August 2022, its tenth cohort graduated with 38 students whose average work experience was 13 years. These figures provide more useful evidence of executive fit than the program title alone. See the ranking and program report and the 2022 commencement report.
Current format and structure: The current page lists 36 credits, 24 months, fully online delivery, $30,000 in tuition plus an estimated $2,500 for course and book fees, and no GMAT/GRE requirement. Those are current figures and policies, not a reconstruction of 2022 pricing or admissions. Review the current Nevada Online EMBA page.
Best fit: Experienced professionals who want a named online EMBA, a small cohort and a practical general-management program while remaining employed.
Main trade-offs: No. 62 is not directly comparable with a dedicated online-EMBA ranking. A small cohort may produce closer peer relationships but fewer elective choices. Confirm current synchronous requirements, residency rules, fees and employer recognition.
5. University of North Carolina Wilmington — Online Executive MBA
Why it made the 2022 shortlist: UNCW was one of Bankrate’s five 2022 selections and was described in 2022 coverage as the best online executive MBA for an accelerated program.
Current format and structure: The current program includes 42 credits, seven-week courses, two on-campus residencies and a one-week international residency or alternative domestic experience. It is AACSB accredited, and the school advertises completion in as few as 12 months for students taking a full-time course load. See the current UNCW program page.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Best fit: Professionals who can manage an intense schedule and value face-to-face leadership development, an international consulting experience, elective customization and a fast completion path.
Main trade-offs: It is not fully remote in practice. The 12-month claim is a minimum-style marketing timeline that assumes continuous enrollment and a heavy course load while working. Airfare, lodging and time away from work add to the cost. Current 2026–2027 tuition is listed as $28,532.98 for in-state residents and $69,511.12 for out-of-state residents; those figures must not be presented as 2022 tuition. UNCW’s archived tuition page is the appropriate place to investigate historical rates.
Admissions and verification: Confirm whether both residencies remain mandatory, whether the international experience has a remote alternative and whether the advertised completion timeline applies to part-time working professionals.
6. Rochester Institute of Technology — Saunders College
Why it belongs on the list: RIT is especially relevant because the degree was explicitly described as an online Executive MBA and tied for No. 9 in U.S. News’ 2022 Best Online MBA Programs ranking. Read RIT’s announcement.
Best fit: Professionals who want an EMBA title alongside a strong result in a major U.S. online MBA ranking and who are interested in technology, analytics and innovation.
Main trade-offs: The No. 9 position came from a general online MBA ranking, not an online-EMBA-only list. It should not be used to claim that RIT is objectively superior to all five Bankrate selections. The current delivery model, required synchronous sessions, tuition, admissions rules and residency expectations should be verified directly with Saunders.
7. Emory University — Goizueta Business School
Why it belongs in a 2022 retrospective: Emory announced its new online Executive MBA format in February 2022, with the first online cohort beginning in fall 2022. It joined existing on-campus and hybrid formats. Read the launch announcement.
Format and structure at launch: The announcement described an 18-month program comprising 27 core credits, six immersion credits and 24 elective credits. Classes used Goizueta’s Global Classrooms. Immersion experiences could be completed in person or remotely, and Emory said online students took the same courses with the same faculty and received the same leadership-development support as students in its other EMBA formats.
Best fit: Experienced professionals who want a recognizable business-school brand, a named EMBA, live virtual interaction and leadership development with the option of online or in-person immersion.
Rank #4
Main trade-offs: This was a new online format in 2022, so it had less online-specific alumni-outcome history than established programs. It also could not have appeared in rankings published before its first cohort. Prestige is not proof of superior online teaching or a guaranteed return on investment.
Strong general online MBAs that executives should also consider
Experienced professionals should not restrict their search to programs with Executive MBA in the title. The following general online MBA programs were prominent in 2022 rankings and may offer broader electives, stronger specialization options or more flexibility for career changers.
Indiana University Kelley Direct
Kelley tied for No. 1 in the 2022 U.S. News online MBA ranking and ranked No. 5 in Poets&Quants’ 2022 online MBA ranking. Poets&Quants listed a historical cost of $78,246. Kelley is a strong option for an established online MBA network, broad electives and professionals who do not need an EMBA cohort label. It is a general online MBA, not a named online EMBA.

UNC Kenan-Flagler
UNC tied for No. 1 in U.S. News and ranked No. 6 in Poets&Quants. Its historical listed cost in the latter ranking was $125,589. It suits professionals seeking a highly ranked general online MBA and a major public-university brand, but its ranking should not be described as an online-EMBA result.
USC Marshall
USC tied for No. 1 in U.S. News and ranked No. 1 in Poets&Quants’ 2022 online MBA ranking, where the historical listed cost was $111,663. The program used a thematic curriculum and began with a residential intensive week. USC is a fit for brand-conscious applicants who value its alumni network and can justify a premium price, provided they are comfortable with that in-person requirement.
Carnegie Mellon Tepper
Tepper ranked No. 4 in U.S. News and No. 2 in Poets&Quants. Its historical listed cost was $141,760, making it one of the most expensive programs in that comparison. It is particularly relevant for executives seeking analytics, technology and quantitatively oriented leadership, but the premium should be evaluated against employer support and the specific career outcome sought.
Washington Foster
Washington Foster tied for No. 5 in U.S. News and ranked No. 4 in Poets&Quants, which listed a historical cost of $78,000. It is a strong general-management alternative for professionals targeting technology, the Pacific Northwest or a highly ranked public-university MBA without the Executive title.
Other ranked general online MBA alternatives
Florida Warrington and Arizona State Carey tied for high positions in the 2022 U.S. News ranking, at No. 5 and No. 7 respectively. Arizona Eller also tied for No. 7. Texas-Dallas Jindal and the Wisconsin MBA Consortium tied for No. 9 with RIT in the same ranking. These are legitimate comparison programs for experienced professionals, but the available evidence here does not establish that they were online EMBAs.
The Poets&Quants top ten also included Santa Clara Leavey, Rice Jones, Baylor Hankamer, Lehigh and Jack Welch Management Institute. Their historical listed costs were $83,510, $109,930, $51,264, $41,595 and $48,695 respectively. Those figures are useful as historical comparison points only; they are not current quotes and may not include identical fees, travel or materials.
Historical cost comparison: what the 2022 figures do and do not tell you
The most complete cost table in the supplied 2022 research came from Poets&Quants’ general online MBA ranking, not from a dedicated online-EMBA ranking. It should not be used to compare the total price of every named EMBA above.
| Program | 2022 ranking source | Historical listed cost |
|---|---|---|
| USC Marshall | Poets&Quants No. 1 | $111,663 |
| Carnegie Mellon Tepper | Poets&Quants No. 2 | $141,760 |
| Santa Clara Leavey | Poets&Quants No. 3 | $83,510 |
| Washington Foster | Poets&Quants No. 4 | $78,000 |
| Indiana Kelley | Poets&Quants No. 5 | $78,246 |
| UNC Kenan-Flagler | Poets&Quants No. 6 | $125,589 |
| Rice Jones | Poets&Quants No. 7 | $109,930 |
| Baylor Hankamer | Poets&Quants No. 8 | $51,264 |
| Lehigh | Poets&Quants No. 9 | $41,595 |
| Jack Welch Management Institute | Poets&Quants No. 10 | $48,695 |
Do not compare these numbers as if they were identical invoices. A published program cost may use a different credit total, exclude fees, assume a particular residency status or omit travel and books. The five Bankrate EMBA schools do not have a reliable, common 2022 cost table in the accessible evidence.

Current-page examples are not 2022 prices
Several school pages now show materially different figures. These examples illustrate why a historical article needs a separate current-verification step:
| Program | Current-page information supplied in the research | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Washington State | $1,395 per credit on the current page | Use only as a current-page figure; do not backdate it to 2022. |
| Nevada Reno | $30,000 tuition plus an estimated $2,500 in course and book fees | Current figure; confirm whether fees and tuition remain unchanged for your cohort. |
| UNC Wilmington | 2026–2027 rates of $28,532.98 in state and $69,511.12 out of state | Current dated rates, not historical 2022 tuition. |
| UH Mānoa | Current page lists a different cohort-specific cost from any historical figure | Request a written quote that includes the residential module and required fees. |
| CSUSB | Current fee information separates the online MBA from other Executive MBA formats | Confirm which degree and fee schedule apply to the online executive option. |
Your true cost should include tuition, mandatory fees, books and course materials, technology fees, residency travel, international airfare and lodging, parking or campus fees, lost work time, employer reimbursement limits and financing interest.
Format and residency comparison
For a working professional, delivery details may matter more than a small ranking difference. Use this evidence-based starting point, then confirm the current schedule.
| Program | Online delivery evidence | Residency or travel issue | Duration or credits in the available evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| UH Mānoa | Live, interactive distance learning | Required intensive residential module at Mānoa | 48 credits; 22 months on the current program page |
| CSUSB | Online executive option; current page describes flexible online study | Verify whether any current or cohort-specific in-person requirement applies | Current catalog describes a 30-unit Executive Concentration |
| Washington State | Current page says 100% online | International field study is optional; confirm whether any live attendance is scheduled | 42 credits; approximately 17 months currently |
| Nevada Reno | Current page says fully online | Confirm current residency and synchronous-session rules | 36 credits; 24 months currently |
| UNC Wilmington | Online courses | Two campus residencies plus one-week international or alternative domestic experience currently listed | 42 credits; as few as 12 months with a full-time load currently advertised |
| RIT Saunders | Explicitly named online EMBA in the 2022 evidence | Verify current live-session and residency requirements | Confirm current credits and schedule with Saunders |
| Emory Goizueta | Fully online format launched for fall 2022 through Global Classrooms | Immersions could be completed in person or remotely in the launch announcement | 18 months at launch; 27 core, six immersion and 24 elective credits |
“Fully online” can still involve live classes, group assignments, proctored exams and fixed time zones. Conversely, a program described as distance learning may provide a more interactive cohort than an asynchronous general MBA. Ask for a sample weekly schedule before applying.
How to compare programs beyond rankings
1. Confirm the program identity
Write down the exact credential: MBA, Executive MBA, MBA with an executive concentration, MBA for executives, Professional MBA or hybrid EMBA. The title can affect cohort expectations and employer perception, but it does not by itself establish academic quality.
2. Check accreditation and the degree issuer
Verify institutional accreditation through the appropriate recognized authority and check whether the business school holds AACSB accreditation where that matters to you. Confirm the exact school issuing the degree and how the credential appears on the transcript. A media ranking is not a substitute for accreditation.
3. Examine the actual cohort
Ask for average and range of work experience, average management experience, class size, industry mix, geographic diversity and the percentage of students already managing people or budgets. Nevada’s reported 12-to-13-year average experience provides a useful example of the kind of evidence to seek. A program with a lower overall ranking may be a better executive fit if its peer group is substantially more experienced.
4. Match the curriculum to the career goal
Compare the balance of general management, strategy, leadership, analytics, technology, entrepreneurship, global business and industry-specific courses. Determine whether electives are genuinely available or whether customization means only a small set of choices. If you are changing careers, inspect recruiting and specialization options rather than assuming an EMBA is designed for that purpose.

- Are live classes mandatory?
- What time zone controls attendance?
- How many hours per week should you plan for?
- Are group projects scheduled outside class?
- Are courses asynchronous, synchronous or mixed?
- Are exams proctored?
- Can you pause, defer or reduce the course load?
- What happens if work travel conflicts with a residency?
6. Evaluate networking and career support
Ask whether online students receive career coaching, leadership coaching, alumni access, recruiting events and employer networking equal to those available to campus students. Look for fixed cohort teams, live discussion sections, faculty office hours, required group projects and alumni events. Do not assume online networking is equivalent to campus networking without evidence.
7. Calculate the all-in price
Request a written estimate for the entire degree, not just tuition per credit. Add mandatory fees, materials, technology charges, travel, lodging, international experiences, parking, time away from work, employer reimbursement limits and loan interest. Compare like with like: in-state and out-of-state tuition can differ dramatically, as the current UNCW figures demonstrate.
8. Treat career outcomes carefully
Ask how the school defines promotion, employment and salary outcomes, what share of the graduating class responded and whether the data covers online EMBA students specifically. Salary differences between EMBA and MBA graduates are confounded by prior seniority, industry, geography and employer support. No ranking or school label proves that the degree caused a particular pay increase.
Decision paths for common applicants
- You cannot travel: Start with WSU or another program whose current rules explicitly eliminate required travel, then confirm that live attendance can be completed from your location. Do not assume that UH Mānoa or UNCW is fully remote.
- You want a small, experienced peer group: Nevada Reno is supported by reported cohort-size and experience data. UH Mānoa is also worth examining if you value a live cohort and can attend its residential module.
- You want a prestigious new online EMBA: Emory Goizueta was the notable high-prestige entrant launched for fall 2022, but its online-specific outcome history was limited at launch.
- You want the fastest advertised path: UNCW’s current page advertises as few as 12 months, but the schedule includes residencies and assumes a demanding full-time course load.
- You want the broadest general online MBA recognition: Compare Kelley, UNC Kenan-Flagler and USC Marshall, the three-way U.S. News No. 1 group in 2022. These are not named online EMBAs.
- You want a public-school value candidate: Compare CSUSB, Nevada, WSU and UNCW after calculating your residency status and travel costs. Do not rely on a generic “affordable” label or a current price when making a 2022 comparison.
- You want analytics or technology emphasis: Consider Carnegie Mellon Tepper among general online MBAs and RIT among named online EMBAs, then compare the actual course lists and career services.
Admissions checklist
Requirements vary by school and intake. Before submitting an application, verify each item on the current admissions page and ask whether it applies to the online executive format specifically.

Important limitations and failure modes
Rankings are not interchangeable
U.S. News, Poets&Quants, QS and Bankrate used different categories and methods. U.S. News ranked online MBAs in the United States. Poets&Quants weighted admissions, academic experience and career outcomes equally and used participating schools and alumni responses. QS published separate global online MBA and global EMBA products. Bankrate’s accessible coverage used consumer-oriented superlatives and does not establish a complete ordered ranking in the evidence available here.
Rankings omit programs
A school may be absent because it declined to participate, was too new to have graduates, failed a response threshold or fell outside the ranking category. Poets&Quants specifically noted the absence or incomplete representation of Illinois Gies, Michigan Ross and Boston University. An omission is not evidence that a program is weak.
“Executive” may describe the schedule, not seniority
CSUSB describes its online MBA for executives as suitable for early- and mid-career professionals. Nevada’s reported cohorts averaged approximately 12 to 13 years of work experience. The names alone do not tell you whether classmates will be senior executives, first-time managers or experienced individual contributors.
“Fastest” may not be realistic for a full-time worker
A minimum completion claim may assume continuous enrollment, no prerequisite courses, no withdrawals and a heavy overlapping course load. Ask the school for the normal completion time for students working full time, not only the shortest advertised timeline.

Online networking requires deliberate design
Ask how often students work in fixed teams, whether faculty are available live, how alumni interact with the cohort and whether career services are shared with on-campus students. A program with fewer residencies may be more convenient but may provide fewer spontaneous networking opportunities.
International applicants need extra checks
Verify availability in your country, local recognition by your employer or regulator, time-zone requirements, English-language testing and whether the institution can issue documentation you need. An online U.S. degree may not satisfy every country’s professional licensing or immigration rule.
How to verify a 2022 shortlist before applying now
- Open the current program page and catalog. Confirm the degree title, credits, length, delivery method and graduation requirements.
- Ask admissions for exceptions in writing. Confirm work experience, management experience, GMAT/GRE/EA policy, interview rules and whether test waivers are discretionary.
- Get a total-cost worksheet. Include tuition, fees, books, technology, residencies, travel, lodging and employer reimbursement.
- Request the residency calendar and sample week. This exposes time-zone, attendance and work-conflict problems before you enroll.
- Request cohort data. Ask for average experience, class size, management seniority, industries and geographic mix.
- Check career-service access. Determine whether online EMBA students receive the same coaching, recruiting access and alumni benefits as other students.
- Verify accreditation and degree issuance. Confirm the school and business-school accreditation from authoritative sources.
- Ask an employer or recruiter. If promotion or employer reimbursement is the goal, verify how the specific credential is treated—not how the school is described in a ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was there a definitive best online Executive MBA ranking in 2022?
No. Bankrate published the closest U.S.-focused online-EMBA list and identified five schools, but the accessible official corroboration does not establish a reliable complete order. U.S. News and Poets&Quants ranked general online MBA programs, while QS published separate online MBA and EMBA rankings.
Was RIT’s No. 9 ranking an online Executive MBA ranking?
No. RIT Saunders’ online Executive MBA tied for No. 9 in U.S. News’ 2022 Best Online MBA Programs ranking. It was a strong result for a named EMBA, but the ranking itself was not limited to Executive MBAs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes an online EMBA require travel?
Sometimes. UH Mānoa required a residential module, and the current UNCW format lists campus residencies plus an international or alternative domestic experience. WSU’s current page says its coursework is 100% online and lists an optional international field study. Emory’s 2022 launch announcement said immersions could be completed in person or remotely. Confirm the rules for your specific cohort.
Can an early-career professional enroll in an online EMBA?
Some can. CSUSB describes its online MBA for executives as suitable for early- or mid-career professionals, while Nevada’s reported cohorts averaged about 12 to 13 years of work experience. Check each program’s actual work- and management-experience requirements rather than relying on the word executive.
Are the tuition figures in this article current?
No. The main cost table uses historical figures listed in Poets&Quants’ 2022 online MBA ranking. Current examples supplied by the research include WSU’s $1,395 per credit, Nevada’s $30,000 tuition plus estimated fees, and UNCW’s 2026–2027 in-state and out-of-state rates. Those current figures are labeled separately and should be confirmed directly with the school.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For a strict 2022 online-EMBA search, begin with the five Bankrate selections—UH Mānoa, CSUSB, Washington State, Nevada Reno and UNC Wilmington—then add RIT Saunders and Emory Goizueta for their distinct evidence and positioning. If you want the strongest general online MBA ranking rather than an EMBA label, compare Kelley, UNC Kenan-Flagler and USC Marshall. The best program is the one whose cohort matches your experience, whose schedule fits your job, whose travel requirements you can meet and whose all-in cost your employer or career plan can justify—not necessarily the one with the highest published rank.
