Best Long-Term Personal Loans of 2022: What We Can—and Can’t—Verify

The evidence does not verify a 2022 ranking of long-term personal loan lenders. Here’s how to interpret the category and compare offers by APR, fees, payment, and total cost.

The available evidence does not establish which lenders were the “best” long-term personal loans in 2022, so naming a ranked shortlist would risk presenting unsupported or current offers as historical facts. What can be done reliably is explain how to assess a long-term personal loan and what details a borrower should compare before choosing one.

What “long-term” means for a personal loan

There is no universal cutoff for the term. Credible describes long-term loans as those with maximum repayment terms of at least six years; NerdWallet defines them as more than five years and selects lenders offering terms of at least seven years. Those are current editorial definitions, not evidence of how a 2022 comparison defined the category.

A personal installment loan generally provides a lump sum that the borrower repays in fixed installments over an agreed period. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that lenders may weigh credit history, income, debt, the requested amount and term, state-law rate limits, and other factors. Interest rates may be fixed or adjustable, and fees also affect the cost. CFPB: What is a personal installment loan?

Why a longer term can cost more

Spreading repayment over more months can lower the scheduled monthly payment, but interest generally accrues for longer. A payment that fits your budget is important; it is not, by itself, evidence that the loan is affordable overall. Credible and NerdWallet both caution that longer repayment can mean higher interest costs, and NerdWallet recommends choosing the shortest repayment period that still produces payments you can afford. What the historical cost evidence shows

A CFPB Taskforce on Federal Consumer Financial Law report published in 2022 reproduces a LendingTree comparison based on observations from May 2018. It reported an 8.79-percentage-point spread in average APR offers across borrowers and a $1,701 spread in total payments for the average three-year, $10,328 loan. These figures describe the 2018 observation period—not 2022 loan offers or current rates—and the three-year example is not itself a long-term-loan comparison. How to compare long-term personal loan offers

Compare offers for the same loan amount and repayment term wherever possible. That makes it easier to distinguish a genuinely lower-cost offer from one that appears cheaper only because it stretches repayment out longer. The CFPB says, “Working with multiple lenders can also help you compare your options and find the best loan terms for your situation.” CFPB consumer guidance

  • APR and rate conditions: Compare APRs and check whether a quoted discount requires autopay. Note whether the rate is fixed or adjustable.
  • Fees and money received: Check origination and late fees, and compare the net proceeds you would actually receive with the amount you must repay.
  • Total repayment and monthly installment: Consider the full dollars repaid alongside the scheduled payment. A low monthly amount can mask a higher total cost.
  • Term and early repayment: Check the repayment period and the lender’s prepayment terms.
  • Eligibility and permitted use: Review credit and income criteria, any restrictions on how the loan may be used, and whether the lender serves your state.
  • Funding time: Confirm when funds could arrive if timing matters to your plans.

Why current lender terms cannot stand in for a 2022 ranking

Current pages illustrate why offers need to be checked as of the date you apply, but they do not establish historical rankings. NerdWallet’s comparison, updated October 1, 2026, describes some lenders with seven-year terms and terms up to 20 years for certain home-improvement loans. Citi’s page lists personal-loan terms of 12 to 60 months and rates as of September 29, 2026. Neither source verifies that a lender or term appeared in a 2022 “best” list. For any present-day decision, verify rates, fees, eligibility, state availability, and repayment terms directly with lenders before applying. Those details can change, and a current comparison is not a substitute for a dated 2022 record.
