The right choice depends on your route, shipment, timing, budget, and how much work you want to do. For an interstate move, build a shortlist, compare written estimates based on the same inventory, find out whether each business is the mover or a broker, and verify the specific company that will handle your shipment through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
How to compare long-distance moving options
Start with your move’s requirements, not a company ranking. “Long-distance” can describe a move within one state or across state lines; the federal rules below apply to interstate household-goods moves. Intrastate moves may follow different state requirements.
Use one complete inventory and the same requested services for each estimate. Compare the written terms in these areas:
- Who transports your belongings: Identify the legal carrier that will perform the interstate move, not just the brand that gave you a quote.
- Price and estimate type: Check whether the estimate is binding or non-binding, what inventory and services it covers, which accessorial charges may apply, and how changes are handled before loading.
- Workload: Confirm who packs, loads, unloads, and places furniture. These tasks may be included, optional, or left to you, depending on the service.
- Schedule: Get the pickup date and delivery window in writing, along with the procedure for delays. FMCSA advises customers not to accept vague delivery timing such as “as soon as possible.”
- Loss and damage protection: Compare the written valuation terms, price, deductible, exclusions, and claims process.
- Optional services: Include any storage, vehicle shipping, packing, or other needs in each quote so the estimates cover the same move.
Do not choose solely on the lowest headline price. A quote is meaningful only in relation to its inventory, included work, schedule, and contract terms.

Check whether the company is a mover or broker
A mover (also called a carrier) transports household goods. A broker arranges transportation but does not transport the goods itself. FMCSA says both interstate movers and brokers must be registered, and brokers must use registered interstate movers. Ask whether the business quoting your move is the carrier or a broker, which carrier will actually transport your shipment, and have the arrangement put in writing.
A familiar brand name alone may not tell you which legal entity will handle a particular shipment. Use FMCSA’s mover search tool to check the exact mover or broker’s registration, authority, and complaint history. FMCSA says the tool provides up-to-date access to registered interstate movers and their complaint history. Confirm that the company named in your estimate and contract matches the entity you checked.

Understand estimates before comparing prices
FMCSA’s Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move handbook says verbal quotes are not official estimates and that movers must provide written estimates for shipments. Request a written estimate based on a complete inventory and the services you actually want. If you add goods, the estimate needs to be reaffirmed or replaced before loading.
Binding estimate
A binding estimate sets the amount for the goods and services described in it, subject to applicable agreed changes and charges. It does not automatically cover additional goods, services, or circumstances outside the written scope. Read the estimate and contract for the specific terms.

Non-binding estimate
A non-binding estimate is not a guaranteed final price. Under the FMCSA’s October 2023 handbook, a mover cannot require more than 110% of a non-binding estimate at delivery; any remaining charges may be billed later. This is a limit on what can be required at delivery, not a promise that the move will cost no more than the estimate overall.
For either estimate type, ask what could change the amount, how you must approve changes, and which accessorial charges are included. Compare the answers in writing rather than relying on a verbal assurance.

Compare valuation and packing terms
For interstate moves, FMCSA says movers must offer Full Value Protection and Released Value. These are valuation options for the mover’s liability, not substitutes for comparing the actual written terms.
| Option | What to know | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Released Value | Costs nothing, but liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per article under the FMCSA’s October 2023 handbook. This is not the item’s market value. FMCSA gives the example that a 25-pound, 50-inch television would yield $15 under this option. | How the limit applies to your shipment and what the claims process requires. |
| Full Value Protection | More comprehensive than Released Value and generally costs more. FMCSA’s October 2023 handbook states a minimum valuation basis of $6 per pound times shipment weight; this is not a cap or a quote for the protection’s cost. The mover’s tariff, declared value, terms, and allowable exceptions matter. | The actual written price, deductible, declared-value terms, exclusions, and claims process. Costs and deductibles vary by mover. |
FMCSA warns that damage claims can be harder to establish for articles you packed yourself. If you self-pack, document the contents and condition of valuable or fragile items, and ask the mover how customer packing affects claims. If you buy moving boxes and packing tape, keep an inventory and photos as you pack; no particular product brand is evaluated here.

Where Mayflower fits—and what its example does not prove
Mayflower’s company website describes interstate services including packing, loading, transport, unloading, car shipping, and storage. It says its booking process includes an in-person or virtual home survey and a binding quote. Those are the company’s own service descriptions, not independent evidence that it is superior, cheapest, or available on a particular route.
If you consider Mayflower, as with any national brand, verify the specific serving entity and compare its written estimate and FMCSA record with other options. Service availability and the entity handling a move can vary; the brand name alone does not establish the carrier for your shipment.
A practical shortlist checklist
- Define the move: Record your origin and destination, inventory, preferred dates, packing needs, access conditions, and any storage or vehicle-shipping requirements.
- Request comparable written estimates: Give each company the same inventory and service requirements. Ask whether the estimate is binding or non-binding and what is excluded.
- Identify the transport provider: Ask whether you are dealing with a mover or broker, and get the carrier’s legal name in writing.
- Verify the business: Check that exact entity’s registration, authority, and complaint history in FMCSA’s mover search tool.
- Compare contract terms: Review pickup and delivery commitments, change procedures, accessorial charges, storage terms, valuation options, and the claims process.
- Choose on fit, not just price: Select the option whose documented scope, schedule, protection, and workload match your needs.
For a move that stays within one state, check your state consumer-affairs agency for the rules that apply; the federal interstate guidance here may not govern it.
