Both manual and powered toothbrushes can effectively remove plaque when used correctly, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Choose a brush the teen will use comfortably: look for a soft-bristled head, a handle that feels manageable, and replacement heads that are easy to find. For braces, sensitivity, or other specific dental needs, ask the teen’s dentist or orthodontist for guidance.
Does a teenager need an electric toothbrush?
Not necessarily. The ADA says manual and powered toothbrushes can both be effective when used appropriately; its guidance does not establish that all teens need an electric brush or that one type is universally better. The routine matters whichever style the teen chooses: brush twice a day for two minutes with soft bristles.
An electric brush may suit a teen who prefers its feel or finds it easier to maintain a brushing routine. Comfort and consistency are practical reasons to choose one, not proof that a particular model cleans better for every teenager.
What to look for when choosing one
- Comfort: The handle should feel secure and manageable, and the brush head should feel comfortable in the teen’s mouth.
- Soft bristles: The ADA’s recommendation is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Replacement heads: Check that heads for the exact handle model are available and straightforward to replace. Do not assume heads fit across every model in a brand’s range.
- Ongoing convenience: Consider how the brush is charged or powered and how easy it will be to keep replacement heads on hand. Compare recurring head costs using current listings; no current prices are established here.
- Personal dental needs: If the teen has braces, oral sensitivity, or another appliance or condition, ask their dental professional whether a particular brush or head is appropriate.
Timers or pressure features may matter to an individual teen, but verify that the exact model includes them rather than assuming they are standard across a product family.

- Optimize your routine: EasyStart for a gradual, gentle increase in brushing power, SmarTimer informing when you've reached 2 minutes, and QuadPacer to brush each section of a mouth for 30 seconds
- Brush head replacement reminder tracks how often and how hard you brush, then notifies you when it's time to replace the brush head; dental professionals recommend changing your brush head regularly
ADA-accepted powered toothbrush examples
The following are examples to consider, not a tested ranking or a teen-specific recommendation. ADA acceptance applies to the claims and product listing evaluated; it does not show that one example is superior to another for teenagers.
| Product listing | What the ADA listing establishes | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Oral-B oscillating-rotating-pulsating electric toothbrushes | The listing covers multiple models and heads, including CrossAction, FlossAction, Precision Clean, Sensitive, Whitening, Ortho, and Interproximal. See the ADA product entry. | Confirm the exact handle and head compatibility, and check the current Seal status for the product you are considering. |
| Oral-B iO Series | The ADA listing says the series is accepted for plaque removal and helping prevent or reduce gingivitis when used as directed. See the ADA product entry. | The listing does not establish performance differences among individual iO models or teen-specific benefits. |
| quip Kids Electric Toothbrush | The ADA listing supports its stated plaque and gingivitis claims. See the ADA product entry. | It is kid-oriented, but the listing does not establish that it fits teenagers better than an adult brush. Have the teen assess the handle and head comfort. |
What the ADA Seal does—and does not—mean
The ADA describes the Seal as the result of a product-specific review against standards for safety and effectiveness for its intended use. It is not a head-to-head ranking and does not mean a product is better than every other toothbrush. Check the exact product in the ADA Seal product listings; acceptance of one product or model should not be assumed to cover every item in a brand’s range.

Choosing a brush for braces or other appliances
A powered brush may be easier for some people with braces or other appliances, but that does not make it the right choice for every teen. Ask the teen’s dentist or orthodontist for advice specific to the appliance, brushing technique, and any oral sensitivity. The ADA’s home oral-care guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for individualized advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to replace the brush head
The ADA recommends replacing a toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are visibly matted or frayed. For an electric brush, apply that timing to the replacement head and follow any model-specific instructions. Keep the exact handle family in mind when buying replacements so the head fits.
